I would like to start a food business next year. At this time, I am still on a planning stage. However, there are still things that I have to do like hiring people. I got some relatives that I would like to help out so I am considering of hiring them. But there are a lot o people who are discouraging me about it because they said that it is difficult to work with relatives. In the end, they will be more of a headache than help. I am really confused. I want to help but I don't my business to be jeopardized and maybe relationship to be scarred in the future if things will not work out. I hope you can share opinion on this.

You will never know if you will not try. So try to hire your relatives so you may also be able o help them have some money. I think before you let them start , tell them of your guidelines on how to run the business and how much salaries they will have. Also tell them the do's and don'ts of your working manners. That way, when they violated what you have just enumerated, you have a reason to fire them without hurting them so much.

I will just have to lay down the rules before we start the business. I would really want to help them. I keep on saying that if I can help others why not my relatives who needed it the most as well.

Correct my friend. At least you are trying to help them earn money. So, it's up to them to make better , their jobs.

Yes I do agree with what the people who told you about it. If the relatives are those type that don't usually complain about things, then I guess it is fine. But if they are not - then I guess you have to think about hiring one. Goodluck on the business!

I guess in that case I would have to check on the background before I hire. I should know first their attitude towards work.

There are advantages and disadvantages to hire relatives. At least they seem to be much more trustful than other people. However, sometimes when they do something wrong, you may feel embarrassed to blame them. And sometimes you have to adjust to them since they are your relatives. You can not really follow your company rules. And if you are not satisfied with their work, it will be too difficult for you to fire them. I love China

Hello rajaiv! like others have stated, it's okay to hire and help relatives as long as you know their characters. there are people who can act like as if they are the boss and feel like not working at all. there are also people who are hardworking and participating for the sake of earning. It's okay to hire relatives but then know their limitations and talk to them what is their real job, to do's and don'ts. It can somehow be hard to hire as well cause relationships can scar away. Just think of possibilities and ask for your family members if it's okay to hire your relatives as well.

In the world of business, there is no saying ' relative or family'. Think as businessman think, even if they are relative, you just treat them like other people who will work for you. You have to make sure that you hire them by not misunderstanding their connection with you. You must have a concept that everyone who work for you is interrelated by professionalism not by family or relative. Good Luck

I think that if you talk to them since the beginning and tell them that the purpose of hiring them and not other people is because you want to help them because the amily is the care each other, then you make like a contract that you have to thinking about possible situations that can come in the future so you stay ok with your bussines and they too like employes.

Talking to them for the purpose of getting them could help. In that case, they know where they stand and would avoid to abuse their position. I just want to avoid that they would act like they are the owners or they think i would give favoritism. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think that there are both positives and negatives when thinking about whether relatives should work for you or not. The most important thing to think about in this situation would be the relationship that you have with the relative in question. If you have a good relationship with them and are able to talk to them about things, then you might find that you are able to work with them without having too many worries about whether you would be able to get on with them or not.

Its okay to hire a relative, for as long that you put a boundary between a business owner and your employee which in turn is also your relatives. Talk to your employee without thinking that she o he is your relatives. Set some regulations like do's and dont's. Try to compensate them with fair and not underpaid as they will tend loose the royalty and loyalty in you and in managing your business. Its all of the matter of regularly handling your business which they will not also taking some advantages with you and the business. And if they see you how you seriously handling the business, they will also do that. And soon everythng will be paid off and everyone is happy. Good luck!

Hire your relatives is fine, but you have to consider that you can be accused of nepotism by other employees. It matters very much to establish from the beginning that limits through which they can express claims and authority so that you do not get up from the one that directs to the one that is guided. However, it is very good to have beside you someone who knows you more and that you can trust. However I am sure that if you get someone to hire, he would be a reliable person that you can rely on. Would also be a possibility that one of them, from various complaints to leave and become competing firm on the same field of activity. Still, the probability may be low, given the diversity of business. If the above can be met, to hire relatives may even be advisable. There are many multinational companies who have relatives among employees. Why not?
