This is the trend today. I see a lot of people here in Philippines use DSLR instead of still shot camera. I would say DSLR is worth buying. You can have good quality pictures.

I have dslr camera and I am very satisfied with it. But I like photography, I am an amateur photographer, so its quite handy if i have little more complicated camera and more functions to use. If you will use camera only for home and holiday shooting than its not worth to have such expensive camera. Than its better that you buy cheapest nikon or canon compact camera. Don`t waste your money for stuff that you don`t need.

I don't agree to this view. I like to have a DSLR since it can shot nice photos. I know not everybody is professional in photography. But you can use the auto-mode of your DSLR and the photo quality is already very good enough. I don't mind having a big camera. Since I pay attention to the photo quality.
I love China

Not unless you are planning on posting these photos or selling them in the foreseeable future while it is true that the DSLRs are really awesome to use. They are a waste of money unless you see your self needing to have multiple lenses as the DSLRs have. That is the big bonus is that you can add different lenses to them so you can go from having a 18-55mm to a 55-200mm lense so it would allow you to zoom in more on the target. Otherwise spend the money on a simple point and shoot and you can get ones that are pretty close to the DSLRs in Megapixels. I would say the best brands for this are Sony and Nikon and the later being what I would highly recommend. Nikons are nice and I would say 8 Mega Pixels should be good for simple photos of family and things of that nature.
DSLRs are for independent media people (Bloggers,Photographers and such) and Professionals. This doesn't mean that it isn't a good buy if you want to spend the money and have a hobby in taking pictures of various things then a DSLR might be the right thing for you.

i think that you shouldn't buy it... if its for that general stuff only... if your not trying to do some kind of artistic stuff on it that requires slower shutter speed and shallow depth of field then i think that you don't.
the thing is you are just trying to take photos like birthdays right and other celebrations that you want to capture the moment... so i don't think that you should buy those bulky and a bit expensive one. the thing is dslrs are technically challenging if you don't know exposure triangle. you need to balance 1so, shutter speed and aperture to have a subject correctly expose. if you don't you will end up with under or over expose photographs that you will need to clean for hours in photoshop. though dslrs have auto focus you wouldn't bring your camera to its full potential and that is like not your money's worth right... it should worth it right, any thing that we buy.
