Just read an article by Dr Mercola. He says that avoiding gluten could help children with disorders like ADHD etc.
He also says that wheat is the worst problem but other grains also can be bad for those who are sensitive for gluten.
Maybe we all should test and see how we feel after eating grains and compare how we feel after avoiding them..
Could the food we eat even cause depression, schizophrenia and many other mental disorders?
Here is the article: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/11/02/gluten-contribute-to-adhd.aspx?e_cid=20111102_DNL_art_2
What do you think?

I do believe the foods we eat can directly impact our health. Sugar is one of the worst that I have seen to aggravate ADHD.. A doctor told a friend that his autistic daughter would be cured if they put her on a special diet and the parents didn't believe him.. she really isn't autistic.. she was damaged by the DPT shot and it caused her to not be able to walk, talk, feed herself or anything... one doc said she had autism and another doc said she had something else.. but anyway she is 21 and still in diapers and still very small.. she is about the size of a 10 year old. I wonder if she could have been cured if she had the special diet. Her diet consists of liquefied oatmeal with veggies and fruits blended in and she drinks it out of a sippy cup. She isn't even able to be fed with a spoon because she will fight it.

Oh, that is too sad.. It´s hard to know if she had been helped. Many would have tried at least with the diet and kept seaching for someone who could give proper advice.. But I would probably make smoothies with fresh fruits and separate smoothies with fresh vegetables, maybe with apple and banana to make it taste better, and serve the cooked food on a different meal. But I am no expert, so I guess there are better advisors than me somewhere..
I really hope she gets some help.
This reminds of the promise in the Bible that in the new world that will come soon, nobody will be sick.

That brings tears to my eyes. I look forward to when the time comes that the world is all new and there is no pain or suffering.

You are right, Lakota, the food we got as children was more natural and allergies were very rare.
It can be hard to find a good quality organic food these days, but it is worth the effort to try and find it.
I think the producers are aware of that people want to buy better food these days, so they might produce more of it..

I read Mercola regularly and agree with some of his assertions. Personally I like to eat grains and do not have a problem with them, but an optometrist friend once told me that some people cannot wear contact lenses if they eat wheat. I do also have some friends who avoid gluten for health reasons. Me, I eat just about anything. I do think, though, that diet has a lot to do with mental health as well as physical well-being.

Yes, some people are more sensitive than others, and especially to Gene Modified food. And there are pesticides used in the agriculture and also fertilizers that are not what they used to be many decades and centuries ago.
If we buy bread or flor from the store, they don´t tell us everything. We may try to find organic food, and it´s better than the others, hopefully, but the air pollution affects the agriculture in many places. So do the chemicals in our environment.
Well, we can hope to experience the time when the following scripture will be fulfilled: "The time has come...for destroying those who destroy the earth." Rev. 11:18

Interesting thought, makes you realize what the big jump in population is all about lately. We ate wheat for centuries, even the Bible says that most of our food should come from grains, fruits and vegetables.
I have always felt that what we eat effects our health in a diverse amount of ways. You are what you eat, or what you eat determines how you feel, if you eat too much of one thing, you get sick, if you don't eat enough you get sick...balance and moderation, balance and moderation.
Sincerely and With Appreciation.

Hi, CJ I have wondered about what kind of grains the ancient Egyptians were eating. I did a search and found this info about Kamut, an old kind of wheat, that is very different compared to the kind we have in our days.
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proceedings1999/v4-182.html
The bible often mentiones people eating bread at different occations and who knows what kind of wheat and other grains they grew. Could it be the Kamut from Egypt?
Maybe we have a chance to ask those who lived in the ancient Israel after they come back from the graves in the new world.. Their bread must have been very different from ours!!

Hello buenavida, its nice to meet you. I really agree with you. Avoiding gluten could help children as well as people with adhd etc. Avoiding ceratin type of food is a type of self help technique with no side effects, It is better than medicines with side effects,
I also read an article by Doctor. Jane Maati Smith about healing music that can help children and people with adhd. Here is the link
http://sound-add-adhd-treatment.com/cd.html
Doctor. Jane Maati Smith also believes that changes in diet and herbal and natural remedies can help people with adhd.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the links, GoldenAsh - I like to read about natural remedies, especially for helping in this area.
There are many kinds of problems these days and so many are a result of wrong diet. People suffer from things that could be prevented rather easily! More and more of us are learning about the natural ways - that is a positive thing..

I read many discussions about adhd but still not understand what is this? Is this any disease? Which type of disease.

ADHD is short for Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and you can read a lot what is written about it if you make a search.
One site I found was this:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002518/
Our digestion can affect our brain and disturb our mental state, that is why we should avoid certain foods.

researchers are finding so many new things about food, it is a very hot research area these days. You never know. We know that certain foods lifts depression, maybe others can cause it.

Hi, winterose Yes, we have still a lot to learn. Most already know that sugar can cause depression and so does white flour, as both lift the sugar level too high and then our body has to lower it to save our lives..
The extra sugar is stored as fat and we get a sugar depression..
Well, let´s not give up..!!

I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. Mental disorders are brought about by a dozen different factors, with each disorder having a different set of contributing elements. In this case, what this article you linked to only suggests is that, in a differential diagnosis of ADHD, there might be indicators that *some* (and not all, mind you) ADHD-related diagnoses is related with celiac disease. To put this simply, people who have celiac disease *may* have ADHD, but not all people with ADHD have celiac disease.
Also, it's too big a leap to connect celiac disease with every mental disorder out there because as I've pointed out earlier, each mental disorder is caused by varying factors. Even the Axis system of the DSM-IV TR (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) views mental disorders across *five* dimensions, which means the causes of mental disorders cannot be really traced simply to one particular ingredient.
I'm sorry to say this but to make a long story short: don't believe everything you read.

Hi, thanks for your comment. You are probably right.. There must be many causes for these disorders, but no harm in trying a gluten free diet and see what happens..
I am sure that except for inherited disorders, our life style affects our health a lot. We need optimal nourishment to stay healthy and full of energy.
I´ve tried food supplements from gnld.com and got rid of a lot of problems, asthma, arthritis, aces and pains.
I take algae and coconut oil too and my thyroid seems to like them..
We sure still have a lot to learn!!
