Does traveling make you happier compared to spending money on other things?

Or is it the other way around? I do know some people who will prioritize traveling to different places instead of buying things for their houses or clothes and other stuff. They say that traveling makes them happier compared to spending their hard earned money on other things. Why do they think so?
With the advent of social networking sites, sharing of photos and images regarding different travels are well over the place. Blogs keep popping up on travel subjects on the places bloggers have already been into. I do know some individuals considering the number of travels and different places visited as a measure of success. Do you consider places traveled as a measure of success for individuals too?
Is traveling better than buying your own car or house? Nowadays, a lot of flights and bookings are on demand. Are we approaching a generation wherein traveling is the main trend of the society?
I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding this one.

Traveling to different countries makes me very happy and I consider it money well spent. Owning a home is important to me too. My car is quite old and I bought it back in 2006 during learning how to drive. It was already 5 years old when I got it.
I don't spend much on clothing. I am trying to reduce the money that I spend on household bills. I need to pay off money on my credit card each month. On it I have my flight that I booked for South America departing Easter next year.
Traveling overseas is a pure delight for me and necessary for me to enjoy life. My best trip was the one I got a cheap flight to Cancun. I used it to visit Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. I was able to climb Mayan ruins, snorkel around coral reefs and see wildlife. My longest trip was around the world in 1993 until 1994. I did another long trip of several months to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in 2001 until 2002.

Yes, I do spend more on travel that home improvement because it is my top hobby. I have just come back home from a four week trip to South America. I am not rich and I wouldn't say I am poor either. Good luck for saving up money for more traveling.

So with the money that you have, do you allot more budget to travel compared to home improvements or material things like technology gadgets and cars? Good for you that you already traveled to a lot of different countries. I have yet to do that too, but I am still strating to travel locally first before going outside. Plus, I do need more money to fund those out of the country trips. As for now, I just travel every once in a while. But I hope that once I am financially stable already, I get to travel a lot. I would love to do a round trip to of the world! You must be filthy rich then and successful as you already have the resources and the time to travel that much!

Oh! So you consider traveling to different places have the same effect as visiting different websites through the internet. Well, maybe I have a different view on that one as I prefer traveling to different places rather than just sit down to visit websites in cyberspace. I do feel that the physical activity of traveling in real life is so much better than the activity used for traveling through cyberspace. But yes, I do know people who would rather do online stuff and play adventure games online than travel in real life. It makes them more in charge of the travel in the online world compared to the real world. Plus, there is less of an exhaustion and hassle in sitting in front of the computer to visit sites compared to visiting other places, not mentioning it is cheaper. But for you mantis, are you happier visiting and traveling the cyberspace compared to traveling to different places in real life?

Hi Agent!
Traveling really does make me happy. But I can't say if I will prefer it or prioritize it over other hobbies that make me happy. For one, it's an expensive hobby. I have to save up first if I want to travel. If I compare it with shopping, watching movies or going out with friends, which are more cheaper but equally make me happy, then I can say that traveling is not my top priority.
But traveling really makes me happy and I really save up for it.

Well, saving up for the simple things is easier and it only entails a short time. But saving up for a travel takes longer and there's danger that the money might be used for emergency or something. That has happened to me before. I have also done borrowing money just to travel and I did not like the result. I paid for it in installments and I did not like it when I have to slash the payment from my salary.

Yep, getting slashed wages can be a pain. Yes, it is hard to save up money because the temptation to use it is always there. Plus, if you are saving up for something, life has a funny way to bring in someone needing to borrow money from you or an emergency or some impulse spending that will occur. That is why a lot of other people don't save at all. But they are missing something about that because saving up for something big like travel gives more happiness in return than spending bits of money on simple things. Accumulating small money can be very rewarding once it grows and becomes the travel you wanted. That is why I always try to discipline myself in spending on little not that necessary things to bring up a splurge once I get to save up for a travel.
I think banks should start offering a product called travel loan. I think many will go after it. Haha!

Yes, indeed there is a different feeling when you go traveling. So you save up for your travels. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives to be happy other than traveling, but traveling has a different mark whenever you do so. You save up for your travels much like when you try to save up for things like gadgets, a car or a house or even getting married because these things are special and makes you happy. But will you consider borrowing money to fund your travels much like getting an auto loan or a housing loan? Will traveling using borrowed money makes sense at all? What do you think? Anyway, I am also trying to save up for my leisurely activities and I am trying to earn online to fund such things and travel is one of those leisure activities of mine. I hope we can save much for a nice travel!

It is because every place brings you unique experiences. Traveling is exciting and fun, not to mention mentally enriching. You also get to meet a lot of people, so everything is just worth the money. On the other hand, material things may last for a while but you'll get bored with them eventually, which only makes you ask for more.
As for me though, I do not have a lot of money to travel but I'd definitely love to set my foot in different places once I can afford it! I'd love to go to the US, UK, France, and Africa!

If I have a lot of money then yes! Why not! Our family has gone through enough hardships so I think it's already time for them to start living life fully, exploring the world, relaxing, etc. It's not about which should be a priority because if I can provide them both then that'd be better.

You got a point in there. The thrill of discovering new places and experiencing new things is the heart of traveling. It gives people a sense of accomplishment when they travel and did something or visit somewhere for the first time. But, let's say you've got a family. Will you put traveling with your family on top of the list to make your family happier than going for house improvements or convenience appliance or vehicles?

You hit on the right topic. Yes, indeed, personally I found traveling is much worth to spend time in the mall or those shopping outlet stores to browsing around and spend a whole day buying clothing. I found really waste of time. And in fact, I love to see different places, and enjoy different cultures, and talk to different people. That will be the really enjoying of life.

Yes, I do believe that the topic of traveling has been a trend nowadays with all the fuzz about seeing nature and going and experiencing different places. Yes, traveling can be much better than shopping alone but the also entails an effort of preparation and money to spend with. Some people even spent their whole life just traveling, trying to look for something different. So I guess that choosing traveling over the set of material things proves that individuals nowadays are not the materialistic kind of people eh? Maybe you are not that keen on shopping, but would you rather spend your money traveling rather than buying the latest technology gadget in there. I do see a trend in the younger generation too that they always spend their money either on travel or on techie gadgets.

Hello AG,
Some people are like this. They feel happier when travel. I know a few people that would choose to travel abroad instead of buying a new house or changing their car.
I even have a colleague that lend the money from the bank to pay for a travel to Paris.
I am not a traveler. I like more to observe the nature (and even the human nature). I don't feel like visiting famous places in the world. If I have to leave home for vacation, I rather choose a trip to the mountains, to be in the middle of the nature.
How about you?

If you feel that it could make a good topic to discuss, go for it. You know I'm not a good topic starter so the subject is all yours.
I would never think about borrowing money to travel. In fact I don't like to borrow money at all. If everybody had been like me, banks would have failed in their business.
You are correct about taking pictures of nature or places that you visit. Sometimes I feel that we don't enjoy the moment enough because we concentrate more on taking good photos instead of just carpe diem

Much like you. I really don't care about the profile or popularity of the place I visit. I'd rather want the experience that I can feel from visiting the place rather than the place itself. That is why I am not a fan of taking pictures of nature and places that I visit. I go for the experience and the feeling. I especially love the activities that a certain place can only offer. Those are the ones that I am excited when visiting. I am not fond of just doing site seeings. Just touring on the sites is no fun for me and boring. I do feel that just visiting a place is not lasting at all, but the thought of experiencing the place itself is what makes me thrilled of traveling. Wow! That friend of yours sure is pretty serious with traveling that he/she would care to borrow money just to travel. I don't know if I would do that too. Will you borrow money also just to fund your travels? Maybe that would be a nice new topic to discuss further, right?

Interestingly, I did find some other person who started the discussion I was thinking. I am quite busy the past few days and weeks and even months to pull off another discussion so I'll let him have it. Like you, I really don't like the idea of borrowing money. I really hate it when I am indebted to another person or institution. That is why, as much as possible, I never borrow money or will borrow money but will eventually pay it the moment I can. I just love the experience and the feeling of traveling and getting into the places and not really into the documentation and views. I am more of the activity person in my travels rather than the view of the places. You are right, it is because I want to enjoy the moment more with all my senses rather than letting just my eyes enjoy the moment.

I think it depends on the individual and what your priorities are. For me I am comitted to helping my daughter raise her son so I have no extra money for traveling. If I were on my own I could save in a lot of ways and save for traveling. I have dreams of places I would like to see but I may never get there. I am retired and have medical issues so I can't get a job to help with this.

Same dilemma as the some of the responders in here. I think that one must reach a status of financial stability and abundance to be able to travel a lot. That is why I am asking if the number of travels can be correlated to the success of an individual. Now I got another new thing to consider for the inability of individuals to travel. You pointed out medical issues as well, much like Ms. Hatley's handicapped situation. Maybe you can just travel and try to experience some places you dreamed of visiting through the internet. If you can't travel in real life due to some reasons, then better try it in cyberspace.

Yes! The internet really paved the way for exploring new things and venturing into some unknowns before. Now everybody can just hover to search engines for possible information and everybody now can see the views and pictures of tourist attractions. It is an adventure right at your fingertips. Happy exploring in the internet then!

Yes, that is also the argument of the individuals who love traveling. learning, observing and experiencing different cultures in different places do make them happy. Why do you think so that this can make them happier compared to buying stuff? Hmmm... well maybe they cherish more the experience rather than the material things. Isn't that a good thing and a bit ironic? In the materialistic world we are living, what makes people happier is just the adventure or experience rather than the material things itself. Just some thoughts to ponder with I guess. Thanks for your inputs!

Besides eating, I can't think of any other way to spend my money other than to travel. hehehe...My purpose of working is just to save enough for me to go somewhere else. I am not the techie kind of guy who buys the latest models of cell phone or consoles. I also don't dream of having a car of my own since I cannot do bring that along when I travel abroad. I was thinking of moving from one place to another in my later years so buying a house would be out of the question. I think travel has been the main trend even during the early times. But travel then has a different purpose but still I think almost all are inclined to travel in one way or the other.

Wow! So you are visioning a traveling life eh. Do you have a family already? I think a life full of travel can be a bit hard if you got a family. Traveling every once is a while I think is the best way to go, but living a life of travel can be exciting but really inappropriate for family life. What do you think? If you got a family, will you prioritize traveling somewhere else to be happy or providing a home and improving it out every now and then instead. Also, will you spend your money buying your children some techie stuff or would you rather use the money to treat your family to a travel?

Hello AG,
Travelling to different places is what i also like as that way i see lot of new things which i must see in my life but then it depends on the money as if its in my budget then only i would like to go for travelling.
I am certainly not a person who would not buy a necessary thing for my home just for travelling.
In whole it depends on the money which will decide the priorities for me.

So money can indeed buy you happiness when spent in traveling. Can that be right? Yeah, I wan to travel too but the money thing hinders me too just like you. That is why I am trying to accumulate my online earnings to fund some leisure activities of mine like traveling. I do know that myLot user marguicha do try to earn online to spend the earnings for her travels. That is also my plan. Well, I hope we can both do travels every now and then. May the situation and time permit us to do so.

Same as the others around in here. The amount of money is what dictates the amount of travels we can make. So from what I deduce from your answer, you consider traveling as like a "want" and all the "needs" should be fulfilled first before travel plans can be made with the remaining money. That's quite the same as me. But what do you think? Does those individuals who travel a lot are usually considered as the successful individuals in society today? I do feel that with the rise of those social network sites like Facebook, sharing of travel experiences have been quite easy. Some people do get to be envy with those who travel a lot that they consider those who travel often as the successful individuals. What do you think about this?

I can imagine the happiness that you felt. Seeing your sibling who you haven't seen for more than a decade already is great! I bet you both got a lot of catching up when you traveled to them. That's the beauty of traveling. You get acquainted to a a different place wherein you may be able to meet new faces or be with the ones that truly matter with you. I suggest that you do travel frequently so that you can surpass the happiness that you felt the first time you traveled to another place.

It is not that I don't believe that traveling brings happiness more than other things. I do travel once in a while and I do enjoy doing so. I would just like to know the thoughts of people regarding this. I am just wondering that in this materialistic world of ours nowadays, isn't it funny that what makes us happier is the experience of traveling rather than the material things itself? So may I ask, what will be your priority in your budget be? Will you prioritize traveling often than getting and constructing your own house or investing your money? Or will you buy a car for convenience first before spending on travels? It is a bit tricky right that is why I want to know people's opinions regarding this. Thanks!

Travelling does not have to be expensive. It can be quite cheap sometimes, especially the domestic trips. Hobbies to me is doing what I enjoy most but it doesn't mean success. If I find happiness in travelling than doing something else, Iam simply replacing the other alternative mostly because I find more happiness in doing so.

My plan is to travel first around my country then target those outside once I get financially stable and abundant. Yes, I agree with you joannaleed. Go for the things that can make you happy. If my current financial situation won't allow me to travel then I'll give it a pass. Though I will make sure to allot money for future travel like say next year. I think it is possible to save some money for this gradually. A small portion of my money will be enough in the future as long as I can make sure that it won't be spend on something else. There are also lots of group buying sites wherein they offer trips for discounted prices, some even are half the price and this is really good for people who loves to travel.

I can deduce too that experiencing is of greater priority compared to material things. Your thinking is like most of my respondents in here too. Most people love traveling then. Maybe because the experience and the moments of valued time spent in traveling is much lasting compared to material things. However, if you are in debt or short or tight of cash, will you still consider to squeeze in traveling leisure to your budget? Especially nowadays that the economy is not that good, will you still allot money for traveling? This seems to be a tricky one.

In my case, travel is the best healing for health. Usually the first days are hard for me, but afterwards, my mind, feet and entire body will turn for the better and better, benefitted by clear air, physical excersices and mind relaxation. Besides, traveling opens our mind, and enriches our knowledge, so that we can have better understanding and solution when encountering problems, which in turn enabling ourselves to have an easier life and work. This is definitely not achievable from pieces of luxuries.

Nice words of wisdom in there zhuhuifen! I do agree with you. The tiredness due to traveling is well compensated and rewarded by the traveling experience that you will have. I have read too that reconnecting with nature and traveling in nature helps improve the body both mentally and physically because it is a getaway from routinary activities and stay away from stresses coming from the city and urban life. I have also pondered that luxuries do give you pleasure but the pleasure given is only shallow compared to what traveling gives. Thanks for nice insights and happy myLotting!

That's good! A balance of both kinds of sources of happiness. I think that spending on material things and spending on travels do give a different kind of happiness and benefits for an individual. That is why, in my opinion, both of this sources of happiness must be balanced. You can try to pamper and shower yourself with some cool stuff like gadgets at one time and then spend on traveling the next time around. Also, it is quite hard to sustain a life of traveling. Physical exhaustion and time can hinder too, not to mention the amount of money one needs to be able to travel. Thanks for your inputs in here maharlikah! Much appreciated!

If I have extra money after paying for the necessities, then I do love to travel. Nowadays, I usually only travel to see family, because that is all that I can afford, and I really can't afford to do that, although somehow I do manage it at least once a year.
When I had money, though, we used to take family vacations, and they were a lot of fun. We traveled a lot with my parents, and I cherish those times, especially since we never had the money to travel or do much when I was growing up. My parents are getting too old to travel now, and it really makes me sad that my little one is not going to have all the memories of traveling with them that my older daughter has. Hopefully, they still have a few years of travel left in them, though, even if we can't travel as long distance as we used to, so my little one can have at least a few memories of those fun adventures with them.

We do not fly when we travel. I do not like to fly, but I will do it when I absolutely have to. My dad will not fly at all, so when we go on vacation we have to drive. That makes it a little more difficult when we are traveling across country, because it takes a lot longer, so we try to arrange a travel route that incorporates things we want to see and do along the way. That way, we are not just traveling to and from a destination but rather the entire trip is a traveling vacation.
I agree that you should try to spend as much time doing fun things with your parents, especially traveling, now if you can, because you will most likely regret it later if you do not. It is really difficult with money so tight right now, though, and sometimes the things that we want to do just are not possible. If you keep saving, however, I suspect you will be able to take that vacation before you know it.

Yes, I am trying to discipline myself and cut some unnecessary spending to be able to create a fund solely for the purpose of investing it and using what I earn in the investment as leisure money. I have promised to my mother that I will treat her to many places to travel when I am already working. So there is no better time for me to start doing it now because I am still single and still with no family obligations or anyone to support to. I hope to be able to fulfill my promise to my parents.

The money is a big problem in funding a travel plan. If only airline fare tickets and accommodations are free. That is the drawback of traveling. It entails the individual to put in a lot of effort, time and money to be able to travel. Traveling every once in while is better than not being able to travel at all. And yes, family vacations are the best. Happiness derived from traveling is best realized if you are with your loved ones. Those are where the fun memories are made. Yes, I do have an office mate advising me to do traveling now with my parents because in the later years, it will be hard for my parents to travel at an old age. That is why I am trying to save up bit by bit to be able to spend and treat my parents during travels.

Yes, I am that kind of person who spend my hard earned money for traveling. If you will see my house, you wouldn't say that the owner has traveled to different countries in Asia, Europe, USA, Africa and working in the Gulf countries.
Traveling and interacting with different people of different culture and nationalities has changed my personality and outlook in life. Traveling is education, it is learning of things that were not taught in school. It made me look at things at a broader perspective and not confined only in one country.
Due to my traveling, I don't want to stay in my home country anymore as all the things i am frustrated from my country, I found it in other countries.

I was not yet introduced to internet when I started traveling in 1995. I came to know internet only in 1997 and the realization that I could earn money from the web was only in 2010.
Building a travel website and earning from it is now my dream. If only I took the advise of my German friends when I was in Germany in 2001 to make a Tagesbuch (some kind of a diary to log my day to day activities) could have been easier now. And those days there was no digicam yet, I was able to use digicam only in 2007. With my travel plans ahead I would definitely bring a notebook and a pen along with me so I can scribble information.
Building my travel blog is also another project that I do not know when can I start due to the demands and pressure of my work. I need to have enough funds to quit this bloody work and start to do my passion. Whew!

Wow! I envy you that you already have been to a lot of different places. My teacher once told us too that she don't bother how her house looks as long as she get to travel often. You have the same thinking as my teacher then. Yes, it is human nature to look for ideas and knowledge and exploring things. That is why traveling is a widespread activity nowadays. It seems that you already learned a lot from your travels. Do you have a blog or site wherein you share some of the tips and tricks that you do or even share your itinerary and the best places to visit on those areas that you already explored?
Anyway, getting to see a lot of new things in different countries makes your own country almost ordinary to your eyes making you already exhausted living in your own country.

I think traveling makes me happier. Through traveling, I can be able to visit so many places and buy things from those places as well. I do also want to buy houses and cars. Maybe I can just balance both. If I can save enough money, maybe I'll buy a car and invest on a lot but then if I also have extra money, I would really love to travel.

Yes, I do believe too that there is a need to balance the priorities and the things that makes you happy. But given this situation, will you try to borrow money from the bank just to fund your travels? Much like getting a housing or auto loan to fund a car or house? What do you think of such a thing as travel loan? With a lot of traveling individuals nowadays, maybe banks should start coming up with the travel loan thing! Haha!

Yes, there is a saying that you should not borrow money to use for your wants. The rule says that you should only borrow money if you know that the money that you are borrowing will yield more money or is necessary to accumulate more money in the future. I have read it many times in blogs and resources pertaining to financial management and the likes. Anyway, it is quite hard to save, but if traveling is really a passion, saving is quite easy as long as the focus and love for traveling is in there.

Wow that would be a good idea. Maybe in the future, there would be such a thing. But I don't know. In my own opinion, I don't want to borrow money from the bank just to travel. Even though I really love to travel, still I would rather choose to just save money so I can be able to travel rather than loaning.
