Do you pretend to text in awkward situations?

In awkward situations where you're like "I'm forever alone and I have no one to talk to here." I have done that a couple of times before and I admit it's pretty stupid, but then I thought that this action has gone too common already that people can now actually tell if you are really texting or just plain pretending and escaping a sticky situation. Now I try to avoid feeling awkward and just focus on the people conversing, on things going around, etc.
If you don't, what are the things that you do to escape the awkward situation? I'd love to hear!

Whoa! I must admit that I do this habit very often. I don't know but I can't help it. It is almost automatic for me to bring out my cellphone in such awkward situations to be able to dodge glances or escape the moment. There was even a time that I tried to resist doing the habit but eventually I still managed to do the action again! Awkward situations are really hard to deal with that's why most individuals try to get in touch with someone or something they are most comfortable with at such situations. And cellphones are the nearest and most comfortable thing that you can get out of our pocket easily.

to escape sticky situation if leaving the place is not an option.
to ignore someone without literally telling him you don't want to talk to him
to feel "not so out of place" when you don't know anyone in the room and you are shy to approach someone....
haha..many many more ^_^

I agree with girl_thinking and mjcookie. I think texting is the most acceptable social activities you can do wherever you are, with the exception of school and other circumstances, and you wouldn't be judged or frown upon.
Can you read books when you're trapped in a boring conversation? Well you can if you have kindle, adobe reader, or kobo app in your phone. I have those app but use it with discretion when I don't want to offend somebody.
Reading is better than texting. That's just my opinion.

Haha! This is a funny discussion!
I do it too! I do it most when I feel out of place. But now that cellphones have games and internet, pretending to text is no use anymore. I just play games and browse the net to let the time pass :)

MY nephew recently told us about a situation where he was acting like he was doing something on his cell phone while while his friend was getting punished by his father. He wanted to keep from embarrassing his friend by acting like he was busy on his cell phone.

haha:) I used to do it in awkward situations. But as u said, these days people can make out if u r really texting or not. And if they are friends who you are with, they will just peep n see if u r really texting:P
So I've started to just pretend that I'm calling up somebody and get up and go away to talk:P

Oh yes, and phones today even have the "fake call" feature that you can activate every time you want someone to "call" you and hopefully escape talking to someone you don't want to talk to. I personally do not pretend like someone is calling me; it's hilarious. I can only pretend that I am navigating through my phone for an important thing. Thanks for responding!

I think that texting is a good way of making ourselves look busy so that other people don't think that we don't have anything else to do. However, if you think about the amount of times that you walk past people without even noticing whether they're texting or not, you could easily come to the conclusion that people just don't notice what you're doing when you're at a party or waiting for somebody. I sometimes pretend to be texting when I see somebody who I don't really want to talk to for whatever reason, and I can simply pretend that I haven't even seen them, then.

May be there are situations as such but it was not pretending it was geting a friend when alone,i went to yahoo chat when it was a real bore day.I did not feel it is awkward as it was making up new friends and sharing the thoughts .

when I see someone from afar that I do not want to talk to, and I know that this person also has seen me and might want to approach me, I pretend to text or talk on my cellphone. This will make the person hesitate to approach me for he/she might think that I might be busy.
Lame but it works most of the time. :)

Yes I am doing the same sometimes. I also do that if I am waiting in a line and I see that the person next to me is trying to start a conversation. So if I am not in the mood to talk, I pretend to busy with my phone until they start talking with someone else.

Maybe once, I've fiddled with my phone when I was by myself in a crowded room and feeling a little awkward and alone which is unusual for me since I enjoy being alone and people watching. Pretending to text isnt something that I usually do but I'm not a big cell phone user anyway. I usually have a book or my kindle with me so I'm more likely to read then pretend to text/use cell phone.
