Hamburger Recipe

The next time I decide to have hamburgers at home I'm going to try something a little bit different. I will mix EQUAL AMOUNTS of Ground Chuck, Pork Sausage and Ground Turkey together with Worcestershire Sauce and form my burgers from this. My reasoning for this combination is as follows. The Ground Chuck has great flavor, the Pork Sausage has interesting flavor, the Ground Turkey would cut down on the fat content and the Worcestershire Sauce will add some good flavor to the overall Burger experience. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It is good to add something to ground turkey or it is very sticky and hard to deal with. Worcestershire sauce makes for very good flavor and I would add some onion powder and maybe alittle garlic. If you like garlic I would cut up some fresh and add some olive oil and fry them in the garlic for added flavor.

Garlic is really tasty on everything, just about. It would be a winner for me.

Yes you could add some seasoned salt and chop some onions like diced and add them into the hamburger meat before cooking them. Yummy!!

I generally prefer to put my salt on at the table. If I put salt on while cooking it tends to dry out the meat, which makes it tough. I prefer my meat juicy and tender.

Great combination...GOOD plan, but if you were "burger experiencing" at my house...there would be a teaspoon of horseradish...and some finely minced garlic, seasoned home-made bread crumbs, and a raw egg for binder! I use ground Turkey, often, for the same reason..low-fat! Xmas, it is used in all my hors d'oevres and sausage rolls (misnomer)...with spices, the flavour is better. My son loves a marinade that I make (horseradish, soya, brandy & dark brown sugar) that he pastry brushes on at the ending of the bbqing our burgers! Mmm...mouthwatering...enjoy!

I use beef chuck, ground pork, and ground veal - just like I do for meatloaf or for meatball. It does give more flavor. I also love to use worcestershire sauce or Dales on them.

I am not familiar with Dales. Can you tell me more about that?

I saw a Steak Sauce with the name Dales on it at Wal-Mart yesterday. Is that what you're referring to? It does sound like a good idea, to me. I may try that soon.

I've never done this before but this sounds really good. When we make spaghetti we always use 1 lb of italian sausage and then 1 lb of ground chuck. I love turker burger and regular hamburger so I'm going to have to try this sometime. I'll be addin some worestershire sauce, garlic, onion powder, and probably some Tony's. Makes for good yummy hamburgers. I don't know if you have ever done this, but we do it all the time and it turns out good. When we make the hamburgers, we always add cheese to make it a cheeseburger. I started making a patty and putting a slice of cheese, or some shredded cheese inside of the patty. After you cook it, the cheese is all good and melted and great!! And of course you can try out different cheeses for different tastes.

One of our local stores would add bacon and blue cheese to the burgers, plus pepper. They were really good.

I am familiar with Tones spices but I don't believe I have ever heard of Tony's could you tell me a little more about it? I think maybe I will use thinly sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese for an additional burst of flavor, too. Great suggestions. Thank you.

Bacon and blue cheese in a burger? That sounds real good. We should try that some day soon. Thank you for that suggestion.

I use the exact same mixture for my meatloaf and meatballs. Sometimes I add italian bread crumbs and put cheese cubes in the middle of the meat.

My daughter and I were just talking today about using ground turkey, which I don't often to, but this sounds like a good way to use it. I would probably put garlic in it, but I put garlic in everything. A little soy sauce in place of the Worcestershire sauce might be good for something different in the future.

Thank you for your suggestion about using soy sauce, I may just try that in the future. Garlic is usually used in our home just as a thought.

Good for you on using less salt. I prefer to let folks put their own salt on food at the table. I think fresh garlic would be a good touch, too. Thank you for your suggestions.

Is that effective for you? Do you rotate anything else? I may mention this to my very allergic friend. I can see it would not allow for combining foods too much.

With my food allergies, I can't to eat the same thing every day - beef once a week, pork once a week, turkey once a week, chicken maybe every 2 or 3 days...

Oh, that sounds good. Instead of the Worcestershire sauce, I would use a hot and spicy kind of sausage, but I do combine those 3 meats myself when making meatballs or meatloaf. If I use plain sausage and use the mixture of those 3 meats for a sandwich, then I make cheeseburgers using jalapeno jack, and browned ONIONS of course! I love onions on a hamburger.

I'm now considering using Ground Pork instead of Sausage. It seems to me that sausage might add too many different flavors to it for hamburgers. Your idea of using Pepper Jack cheese and Grilled Onions is making my mouth water just thinking about it. Come to Kansas and we will make a day of trying the ideas that this discussion has spawned in my brain.

We'll let writersedge come, too, with the black pepper, only I want grilled onions, not onion powder on mine, please. I have only been in Kansas once. There was a tornado that day that chased me out of St. Louis!

Can I go to your house to eat? Sounds good already. I'd slice an onion to put on top. Or maybe throw some black pepper and some onion powder on top.

I'm assuming that you are referring to raw onion on this burger. Another poster has suggested grilled onions on top. I like BOTH IDEAS. Maybe I'll put BOTH OF THEM on a hamburger.

Both, I would have never thought of that. You are a hamburger genious. Why couldn't you live down the road from me? You have a great combo coming on.

good day finlander60 I can think of a few more things to try adding, like onions and garlic and different spices. But also I would add an egg and some bread crumbs to keep it all together when you cook it. I always add egg and then something to keep it together like bread crumbs or sometimes I will use some oatmeal. The oatmeal gives it more texture and tastes good too. When I make a meatloaf I do the same thing so it doesn't fall apart. There are hundreds of ways to cook hamburger so it makes it a very economical meat. I even make hamburger soup with beef hamburger. I have never tried it with pork or turkey but I think the turkey would work too, not the pork, I think the pork would create too much grease in the soup. Cheers and happy mylotting my friend Talk to you soon, Chris

Don't forget that oatmeal is also a great way to cut down on your cholesterol, too. With pork producers making leaner pork these days, I'm not too concerned about the grease at this time. They have really cut down on the available fat content since about the 1980's I believe.

No, I didn't realize that oatmeal was a good source to cut down my cholesterol, so just another added benefit by using it, good.

Also if you want to try something different try ranch burgers where you mix the ranch dry mix into your meat mix. Also you can try it to where after you are cooking your meat patties try adding a little mustard on top while it is still cooking and flip them occasionally. I do not add mustard to my hotdogs or burgers but this is really good! Something different definitely!

I really like the idea of using mustard on the burger while grilling. Your suggestion about the dry ranch mix would go over well at our home, too.

I´d just mix lean pork and lean red meat with the usual additives. Spices, an egg, bread crumbs, fried diced onion with garlic, minced parsley. That´s my normal recipe and I like it so much that I would not change it. Sausage is too much fat for hamburgers.

What kind of cheese would you use on this kind of hamburger?

When I do add cheese, I use a kind of chhese that melts, laminated, maybe a Gouda, and place it in the middle of a thinner hamburger.
