Attacking Dogs - How to Protect Yourself and Children

Dogs can be great friends, if they are treated responsibly. I just found an e-book that was included in a free program I am in. Here is some advice that is good to know. All dogs can attack - even small dogs and even if it´s looking friendly and is wagging its tail. Never leave a dog alone with children without overseeing them. We should never approach a strange dog. Looking the dog straight in the eyes can be taken as an aggression and the dog may attack. Be like a tree, don´t back or run and look away. Be quiet - if you scream etc, it may scare the dog and it will attack to defend itself - remember, the dog doesn´t know your intentions. There is more advice, but please tell us your strategy to prevent dog attacks. How do you do if the dog attacks in spite of the precaution??

kick 'em in the teeth - that's what I did... and the owner turned to her sister (who the dog had bitten many times) and said "That's how you do it"

Well, it may help, of course, but if the dog is really aggressive, it may make it even more aggressive. The book I read, is in my profile - or the link to the program I found the book in. I can send the link, if you wish.. I think cats are less aggressive, but you have to know how to handle them, and I guess you are an expert..

I guess you know how to handle dogs.. It would be great if we could calm them down like that.. Maybe it works in most cases..

It´s amazing, Lakota.. My dad was a person that most dogs loved a lot, so he must have been that kind of person too. He grew up in the country with animals, so the ability to handle them was good to have.

Always been good with all animals my hubby said I could charm a snake if need be. lol He also was amazed that I could ride one of thier mules that would ever come to any of them at the house. Even now lost animals show up at my house and I have to find the owners

One time I did have an encounter with a vicious dog and I threw a gallon of water at him. to my amazement, that dog did run away. I also happened to be holding a large knife as I was in the garden cutting a plant at the time this dog snuck up on me. They do say not to look at the dog, but in this case it was impossible not to do so. Our eyes did literally lock, but fortunately I was able to frighten the dog away even though it was a pit bull.

Hi, Ann - very efficient way to protect yourself. Good that you had the water ready.. This kind of dogs should be well controlled by the owners, so that they don´t harm anyone! I wouldn´t dare to have one. Well, I prefer cats..

I prefer cats, too. The dog that would like to have attacked me was trained to be bad as he belonged to a neighborhood thug, who was subsequently arrested and both him and the dog taken away...but not soon enough.

"Be like a tree, don´t back or run and look away." In any future encounters with vicious dogs, I will follow that advise. Thanks!

Both smileys ar cute, so thanks!.. The sun with sunglasses is so fun.. Now we´d better go to sleep on both sides of the ocean, and rest a bit! A new day tomorrow and the days get shorter all the time until next month 21st. Then the spring starts again! Looking forward to that..

What I use to do to protect myself froma dog is, if I see a dog is getting near me I stay quite and normal and to not show my feelings to the dog,in order he doesn't feels that I am dangerous,so I keep quite and leave the aerea like if he wasn't there, but very scare of course, but since I was a child I use to do that and even thought there big dogs and I was a little girl my confidence helped me to be safe.

Yes, Rosa - it can help to ignore the dog and most times it helps. Sometimes we need other strategies and that is why I read that book. I will help you to get it free, if you wish.. The dogs in our country are bound, unless they have run away, but that happens rarely.

Hi there! Thank you so much for these tips! I'm very scared of dogs, you see! Not all dogs. Those dogs that are rather aggressive, dirty and probably crazy scare me! Walking alone in a narrow street or place with a dog in the way is absolutely horrifying! Now, I'll have to keep those tips in mind whenever i get into situations like that. Again, thank you! By the way, what's the title of the book you've read?

I´m sure it will help to know what to do and you will not be so scared of the dogs then.. Wish you well..

I found that the dogs especially like to pick on small children. I remember in the past when my child and I passed to a street, a dog barked terribly and I was so scared. Of course I held my son tightly and tried to get away. Later my husband told me that I should bend down as the dog would think you might want to pick up a stone and throw to it. And it would be scared and leave you alone. In fact my first response is still to run away, but I shall listen to my husband since his method really works. I love China

I´m afraid some dogs would be even more aggressive if they think we are threatening them. If it doesn´t help to just ignore them and look the other way, there are some good advice in the book I read. If you wish to have it, send me a PM..

I have had a scared dog leap at me and the best thing you can do is bring your knee up high to catch them in the chest. This knocks the wind out of them. The dog did not mean to attack me and turned out to be a gentle but very frightened creature. If you hit them they will fight for what they think is survival. Use your knee and that will discourage them unless they are made with fright or very sick. That's what my Grandpa taught me and the one time I had to do it, it worked.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it helped that time, and maybe helps other times as well.. Even a scared dog can be dangerous and if we can show them that we are friendly, it would be good, but it´s hard to know, so your way to defend yourself can be good to know. Many small dogs are often scared so if we can calm them down, we may have a good friend..

One way is sitting down whenever a dog approaches. They are at an advantage when you are standing because they can bite you. Just sit down and they will quit following or running after you. To them it's like your picking up something to cast upon them. When you sit, you are almost at the same level with them (physically) so they will fear you. Believe me. I was once a dog. Kidding!

Hi, cowboynextdoor..welcome to myLot The book I read advised to protect our head and neck, as these are the most vulnerable parts. It talks about lying in a fetal position. Maybe that is the last try if we have tried the other things. If you want to read that book, there is a link in my profile, or you can PM me.
