In Flanders Field the Poppies blow, Remember November 11 at the 11th Hour

Tomorrow is Rememberance day. I am sad to see that fewer and fewer people wear poppies in rememberance of the brave men and women who gave their lives in the first World War and all subsequent wars. Let us not forget them. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved: and now we lie In Flanders fields! Take up our quarrel with the foe To you, from failing hands, we throw The torch: be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

In the States, we have Veteran's Day. In our tradition, we put up and wear our country's flag. I don't. I am a pacifist and don't believe in war. I'm not going to celebrate it. Maybe others have similar feelings.

You wouldn't defend your country if it was attacked?

Hi Sketch, I don't think celebrate is actually what we should do on Rememberance or Veteran's day. We should remember those who gave their lives and yes, reflect on the insanity of war. I am a pacifist as well, however, I believe there is such a thing as a justifiable war such as the Second World War, where one evil dictator would have enslaved a very large part of Europe if war had not been declared. Tomorrow I will go to the Rememberance Service, put my poppy on a wreath and pray that we will never have another war. You should wear your country's flag on your day of Rememberance.

Thank you Lindalinda! One for sharing that lovely poem, and two; for reminding us...that all the liberties we experience today were fought for with allegiance and pride by those we are memorializing today! My heart is filled with pride & sorrow! I did lose family members! As we all have senior members in a community, we look up to...we have in this community, a lovely senior lady...whom is a veteran of the WAC's (women's airforce) of which there were few...BUT today is also..HER BIRTHDAY--so it is a very special day for her..and for us to respect & revere her for her commitment to her country...under more than difficult conditions! Thank you, for reminding us to be respectful and thankful! I will be attending the local service at 11 a.m.--with pride!

Good for you. I went to the service in Toronto. It was so cold, but I was happy to see such a huge crowd of people. Old and young. I was also glad to see so many school children with their teachers.

Lindalinda...talk about ethereal..talk about something special...WOW! Miracles! Thursday nite, the wind was howling..the rain just pelting down. On my way to work (2miles...on my E-bike, and in the dark of the a.m., I was stopping every 50 feet to remove huge branches)I thought what a miserable day...for Rememberance Day. Maybe, it was to remind us of the NOT to enjoyable conditions our troops faced! At exactly 10:25 a.m., the winds abated completely...the sky turned azure blue, and the sun shone stupendously! Gave a whole lot more significance to the day, to me. The miserable weather like the war...the sunshine, a celebration of when it was over! Wow! Yes, seeing the children attend is heartwarming!
