I have always felt drawn to small towns. Larger towns and Cities, (small or large), are okay to visit, work in, or go shopping in, however, I prefer small towns to live in. That's just my preference.
Anyway, I am curious to know, what other people believe to be some of the best and/or most interesting small towns in America? Why do you think so?
I'm aware that different people have different ideas about what a small town is, so for the purpose of clarity, when I say small town, firstly, I am referring more to the population, rather than land mass, (though it stands to reason that most small towns probably do not have much land mass anyway). Also, I am referring to towns with a population of no less than 900, (as much less than that isn't much of a town at all, imo), and no more than 2 thousand.
So, which small towns, matching the above definition, do you think are the best in America and why? Let us discuss.

I know what you are saying, I go visit small towns in the country to take photos and think how beautiful and quiet, how wonderful it would be to live there but me being a shopoholic I think I would get bored, I think it is also nice to live in walking distance to a nice shopping strip with lots of cafes....hmmmm I just can't be satisfied.

@lilaclady, I like shopping but it doesn't bother me to drive to a shopping center. I'd prefer not to have to carry my purchases around me as I go from store to store, as I would if I had walked.
@rosalie, those towns you mention sound nice but what is it exactly that you like them over other small towns?

Well, I've always felt that a big, populated city is best because I've lived in Houston practically my entire life! I couldn't live in a small town because I'm so used to having a huge availability of services at my fingertips! I don't really like the country life or being 10 miles away from the nearest gas station, so I enjoy living in a close compacted city! One day, I will purchase a big plot of land and a nice house, but it will still be somewhere relatively close to the city!

Well, your message certainly brings back all the beautiful memories of my earlier years. I was born and brought up in a small town, far far out in the countryside. I am living a big city now, and that is because of the job I wanted. If I were to say where I would very much enjoy living, it would be in that small town, indeed !

up until I moved here I lived in large cities
I never really liked it especiaslly when I had kids
I moved here about 4 years ago and I love it!
population here is about 1300 and the crime rate is 0
everyone knows everyone and treats each other like neighbors
I have often joked that this town is like Mayberry

I think Slayton, MN has around the 2 thousand, I really like it because it's calm and nice, I don't really know much small towns, though.
