Christmas cookies is a way of bonding

I make each year some christmas cookies that are mostly eaten before Christmas. I invite (one at a time) my two youngest grandsons and we make the cookies. The biggest mess is the decoration. I use the dining room which has more space and fortunatly has also a laminated florring. After the pieces of art are made, the table and floor are covered by coloured frosting and those coloured small pearls that find their way under the chairs. I hope that some day, when they have their own children, they will remember the cookies they made with grandma many, many years ago. Do you make some baking or special crafts with your children in Christmas time? Share!

When I was growing up, every year we'd start our cookie making about 3 weeks before Christmas. We lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere at the time. These are some of my fondest childhood memories. We made sugar cookies that were half red, half green. Candy Cane cookies that had peppermint flavoring. Half plain dough and half red. We twisted them together and then shaped them into canes. Press cookies. Always green in the shapes of wreaths, Christmas trees and stars. Decorated them with red hots and silver balls. We also made 2 types of homemade fudge. Standard chocolate and butterscotch. Tons of nuts in them both. We always made Toll House chocolate chip cookies that were the bomb! As we finished each type of cookie, we'd put them in big tupperware containers in the freezer and took them out 2 days before Christmas. Then came plating time! Mom always made a list of our neighbors and we'd write a tag with their family names. Each family got about 2 dozen assorted cookies and fudge....so you get the idea of just how MANY cookies we made! We always made a plate for the mailman too and stuck it in our mailbox. Christmas eve we drove around delivering our homemade goodies. It was always sooooooo fun and gave us the chance to see everybody's Christmas lights and decorations. Unfortunately, we're all grown up now and scattered to the four corners of the Earth! lol. My mom still makes all those things as it gets close to the holidays. She still gives them to her neighbors and postal worker.

Your answer, veromar, has the real spirit of Christmas as I see it. It´s a pity that you are not together anymore. But these customs can be done wherever you are, if you want to. Maybe you cannot make cookies for everyone if you are now living in a big city where there´s no sense of neighborhood. But you can do it for the family or friends you have nearby.

I've never got christmas cookies or made them. but it sounds soo interesting in what you have written and it sounds very sweet. I am sure it is heartwarming that your grands would pass them on to their children and grands too. I've never made cookies, but my mom and me would make some special menu in the special day. well, we like to hmmm... argue a lot like what and who should do what, what kind of plate should be use and so on so on. and well, the kitchen would be really messy because we tend to ignore it after all the dishes are ready. hahaha it is really fun, because it's the time when I can really smell the delicious smell from my mom cook even I like to interrupt her, just for tasting the done food-but-not-served-yet.

I think my Christmas cookies have the same meaning that your special menu. The importance of all this is not what you do, but the spirit of love and bonding. And I don´t know why, but a messy kitchen and lots of laughter helps a lot.

I have always loved making cookies with my girls. As they got older, they started to lose interest in our cookie times but I can still get them on board with me sometimes. I used to make Christmas ornaments with them too. That was always a lot of fun. I would look up stuff online and try something new every time we did it. I do think it is a perfect recipe for memories.

Cookie making is a good idea now that Christmas is getting close. I won´t get presents for the older grandchildren, but I´ll take cookies and cupcakes with frosting on them. I hope they like it.

Kitchen is a place where mother and small children get together. Many times the mother makes a sacrifice of a small piece of dough when making cookies so that small children can play with it near her.

That's really nice you know. We will be commemorating Christmas in our own way here too. (Which we haven't thought of that yet. Maybe we'll add cookies in the celebration menu this time thanks to you...) I hope you and your family will enjoy this holiday season! *Wink. Merry Christmas!

I think we all celebrate Christmas in our way, as I can see from the different responses. But we all do something. For me, Christmas is a moment of bonding, although I´m not a religious person. But I do feel it´s a feast to love of the best kind.

I try to bake with the kids whenever I have the money for ingredients. The kids love all the mixing and of course tasting the end product it's the helping me set up the pans that they don't stick around for *LOL* I remember baking when I was 6-7ish with my mom. I remember more so baking and making candies w/ my Aunt when I was a few years older than that. The kids like to cook quite a bit the hard part is again having ingredients and a task for them to each be able to do at their age.

Perhaps you should wait a couple of years, alottodo. I remember that before they were 3 years old, my chidren and grandchildren wanted to eat everything they had on their hands. But maybe the poor kids were hungry!

Starting this year we'll be making a gingerbread house, I'll set it up and the kids will decorate it. I think I'll also let them decorate the ginger bread cookies as well.

We don´t make so many gingerbread cookies here. I think gingerbread cookies go along better with cold seasons and our Christmas is in the middle of Summer. I have seen decorated gingerbread houses and they are awesome. Do send us a picture of yours when the time comes.

Sadly in my family I'm the only who has spark for baking. My father and mother are great cooks and they dont have patience for baking, but for me the real spirit of Christmas is bonding together. I'm already happy with my family munching the baked goods i make and asking me to make another batch the next day.The moments i share with them is already very precious to me even if they cant help me in my baking.Ill be giving some Christmas treat to my friends this Christmas too=). The bond that you share with your grandsons is so wonderful, it reminded me of the anime Yumeiro Patisserie where the protagonist(Ichigo) and her grandmother always go to her grandmothers pastry shop to bake something. Ichigo would always be delighted to watch her grandma bake and whip up some delicious treats.Ichigo was then inspired to be a patisserie because her grandma always make baked goods and make people happy... have a great day marguicha =)!

Any kind of sharing is equally wonderful. Baking is a nice way of bonding with my very active younger grandsons. But when they grow old ( as I have other older grandchildren) there are other ways of cuddling. I make lots of jam for them from my apricot tree, but mainly we talk sometimes and share our thoughts.
