Pope Benedict XVI was popularly known as Theologian Joseph Ratzinger to theology students. He is most admired as a theologian. Most of his writings are considered radicals for they capture the theology of the times, reflecting most vividly what Christ had taught during His times. Some of Ratzinger's writings condemned the very sins of the contemporary world of a particular place, but humbly loved the sinners and worked for their transformation. He was considered by many as a progressive theologian who lived the essence and principles of liberation theology. Few years later, his many followers in theology were surprised by his arising to the seat of becoming cardinal. In this scenario, the radical tongue and writings of Ratzinger slowly die down. On one occasion, he was commissioned to silence a fellow theologian who followed his footsteps being radical and progressive. Few years more, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger took the seat of papacy. Same story is seen in the person of Fr. Luis Tagle, who was an ardent theologian teaching theology in Loyola School of Theology in Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. A brilliant professor he is, many students are lured into his progressive teachings embodying in his person the very teachings of Christ himself - radical and progressive. He was always a guest in the Vatican to lecture the College of Bishops about the Dogma of Faith. He was always invited to join the Jesuits. The Vatican also wanted to ordain him a bishop. But he was firm in his reply, "to remain a priest and a theologian". Few years later, as I was once a student of then Fr. Luis Tagle, I was surprised that he accepted the bishopry of Cavite, Philippines. Later on, he was in the news to replace Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales as the Archbishop of Manila. Now, rumors are in the air that the Vatican is planning to ordain him to the CDF so that he will become legitimate to be nominated to the papacy. Brilliant and progressive theologians are always snatched by the Vatican by way of ordaining them to the hierarchy of the church to silence them from their advocacy. This is what many have seen. There might be other reasons for the likes of Ratzinger and Tagle, who fought for their theologies and advocacy and tried hard to stand to remain as theologians, to accept the challenge to be ordained as bishops....that remains to be told..

Welcome to Mylot Ruegin! I am sure that they have prayed for guidance to take or not to take on new roles. As they rise to another level, i am sure that they have also prayed that a new radical blood would replace their position as theologians.

Hi Ruegin and welcome to Mylot too. To be honest with you I must say that I did not know all these things about Pope Benedict XVI. Thanks for the info. It's interesting to know what the pope said as a theologian. @graceekwenx I agree with you. Maybe as they change their seat and their functions, there's another role they have to do so that explains the change on some of their positions. ALVARO

graceekwenx and starsailover, thanks a lot for welcoming me here in Mylot and also for all your comments. Actually, what becomes the sad fact for Christian religions, especially Catholics (most especially the radical-minded Catholics) is - these once radical theologians who now take the seats of bishopric cause the other radical theologians to become silence for the fear of ex-communication. Why do I recurrently speak of the word "radical"? From Dictionary.com, radical means 1.) "of or going to the root or origin; fundamental: a radical difference", 2.)"favoring drastic political, economic, or social reforms:radical ideas; radical and anarchistic ideologues." Jesus Christ, during His life on earth, possessed a RADICAL MIND, i.e., he went back to what is fundamental, the root, the origin of man's purpose of his existence and that is, to a personal relationship to GOD through humankind (of course this includes relationship to the world and all its inhabitants). People, whose culture became the culture of corruption and alienation from God, where surprised and hurt to what Jesus had introduced (though it was not new but just a going back to the what it should be). Jesus did it to bring back the harmony of humankind to the Creator, God Himself. Does Vatican commit against Christ's principles when she causes these progressive and radical theologians into silence?

hi to all. There are a lot reasons why the Vatican elevated brilliant theologians into the hierarchy. I don't think it is just for the sake of making them silent of their advocacy.
