Avatar: Why not own picture? What does yours convey?

[Upfront, I would suggest to any one who thinks this post is a recent repetition, to mark for deletion. I won't mind For all the eight to none years that I have been online until about a few months back, I was using my own photo on every profile page. Only recently I changed it to the current avatar. I have had no issues displaying my photo though. And a lot of people have already known me. I created an avatar to reflect my personality as an urbane, past middle age formal guy. Share your stories.

Hi Pushhyarag, The same story is mine too. Which over site needed me to upload a photo of mine I have done and as you have said I to have not had any issue withthis. But many people are afraid of displaying their original avatar ( the real face ) lest something ugly should happen. Last year When I had been to Ranchi University Academic staff College one Resource person from IT said it emphatically that no where in the NET we should upload our pictures. When I asked him what is the use of Internet then? What answer he could give you can just guess. He said if we have put up our pictures there then we should immediately delete them.

krajibg I think in most cases you are perfectly safe using your photo..but the Internet is so open to so many people I do think there is a very small risk something could happen.

Hi krajibg. It should be perfectly fine in most cases with own photo. In fact when I registered at myLot some months ago I used a good photo of mine for profile pic. But then the apprehension of many, especially the women is perhaps well founded what with all kinds of trolls and fakes stalking them and tormenting them. @stary1, It could be a mere apprehension that something might happen with a real photo. Not for men at least? Women/girls in less socially free societies may be right fearing so. Thanks both for sharing.

Pushhyarag2000 You have a good point, but there are men jerks too who would go after other men. I realize the number would be low. If thebenefits outweigh the risks, then one should feel free to post a photo. LOL I just don;t see any benefits...if one became better friends they could always e-mail pictures to each other.

Pushhyarag2000 I like your self created avatar..I think it is very clever:) I kind of agree we should not put personal pictures on the Internet. In most cases it will never be harmful, but one never knows who they might run into or tick off who is a little on the nutso side. I have been on bullitin boards where some of the the posters were so angry at another merely because they disagreed about something trivial. I have even seen some try to hurt another...

Hi stary, I agree with you. Internet is so much open to all that If you sometime pick up a row may be your picture would get a Photoshopped touch and you can not do anything. Specially beautiful looking girls or women should be on the safer side.

Thanks for liking the avatar. I realize there could possibly some unpleasant incidents and a real picture might cause harm. If one is cautious, the risk is fairly low. Yeah, but then...

This avatar is good. I tried to load my photo. I could not succeed. Are you able to load another avatar nowadays. I have been trying for five days. I was not posting my photo because my people objected. But having stayed here for six months + I thought I can load my photo. I rate you as a sales representative of 45 years age living in a town.

I wonder why would you not be able to load your poto. What exactly is the issue? I'm sure you are doing that under preferences on which page you have the option to choose & upload your photo. Since I have seen no notification regarding the type or size of image, I assume there has to be no issue on that either. Pl let me know what's type & size of your photo and if you want me to help. If any Company were to make me their salesman, they would lose market position for their products.

fanta has a point there!!ha ha As I have mentioned in this post, I had uploaded my photo for registering on myLot. Many interesting avatars I see on sites made me like them because they are a funky and help presnt our personality in a caricature format. If you want to see how I look in real image, I can lead you to check them out. :D Have a nice time!

For me, I really never want to post my personal pictures online as avatar. I choose to find a better avatar than my photo lol. For me, my avatar here in mylot is a kitten. Because I love kitten, and my avatar looks very similar to my kitten. I will put her original picture as my avatar when I get the chance.

I have had a few different avatars. Right now I have a male Lion. I chose it because I am an animla lover. I was also appaulled hearing all those wild animals were killed after that owner let them loose in Ohio a few weeks ago! I wanted to show I am not just a lover of pets but I love wild animals!

I mostly put pictures of myself at a vacation place to remind myself that I use the money I earn online for vacations and travel. I change it from time to time and sometinçmes I use a specially beautiful picture of a place where I had fun.. My pictures show a past middle age ol´witch, a bit crazy and having learned that life is a miracle.

That's a good way of recognizing both the passion & the rewards. I reckon you travel often.

I have no problem putting pictures of myself online. I have a facebook with tons of pictures, and I even have a youtube channel floating around, as well. But, for me, an avatar has always been a representation of myself, or something that is a large part of my life. For example, the avatar I have right now is several different forms of exercise. I'm a very active person and have a passion for the gym, especially spinning and lifting. I'm there six days a week, several hours a day! Haha! So, when choosing my avatar for MyLot, being that this was a discussion site where I would seemingly form friendships through my interests and opinions, I chose that avatar to represent what is a large part of who I am. But, definitely NOT the only part of me ;) That's just this girls humble opinion, though!

The girl's humble opinion gives a lot of details! So you too use the avatar to represent the whole that is us! With a host of diverse interests and being active, you are sure to make a lot of friends. Thanks for the share.

I think my "avatar" fits me too, btw my real pic is on here as well. I still have long hair and no matter what happens I am full of fire to ... fight? Words, deeds, all the same to me.

Perhaps I have slightly different viewpoints than others, hoping this is alright and at the same time understand or attempt to understand the views of others. There needs to be controls for repetition, I guess, but I also like to see fresh perspectives and new posts even if they are similar in subject. The same applies to this topic, it is good to see a variety of approaches on avatars and I certainly do appreciate how others share information about themselves. I want my avatar and my name to display a part of my soul. I also want to let people see my artistic side and perhaps see a person that has feelings and cares about others. It is for online, that is where the connection exists.
