Why is it that in horror movies...

the killer just walks while the person they're after is running like crazy? The movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was just on and I noticed this and it made me thing about other horror movies I've seen. The person can be running their heart out while the killer just walks and the killer will still be able to get them. To me, it makes no sense. If the person is running, they should be able to get away..especially if the killer is just walking lol.

Good point but the victim is usually injured or if not trips and injures themselves lol. A guy on his own might get away but add a women into the mix and guaranteed she will break a heel Such is the plot device of so many horror movies.
If ya throw in slow moving zombies, you should be able to outrun them but they make up for that in number. I do hear what you are saying a lone killer should stand no chance. Maybe there is a gap in the market for a movie where everyone survives and the killer is the loser..hmmm

Oh yeah.. it's usually a girl running for her life, and she is looking behind her as she runs. She is out of breath and you can hear her gasping and then she falls and the killer catches up to her or is closer. She may get up again and run some more just to trip and fall again... scary! I can't watch them... if I do I have to keep reminding myself that it is JUST a movie.

Lol yeah, I noticed that too. And I wonder why they still use that tactic in some horror movie today. Maybe they think it will not be that scary if the killer is also running. Killers should always look relaxed, like they are very inhumane . That is why I don't consider these kinds of movies as horror. Horror movies for me are with ghosts like The grudge or The eye.

I too often wonder the same too. How come the victim cannot get away far enough since the killer is just strolling? And how come the victim always run in a straight line when being chased? Why not go into the woods or a building or elsewhere instead of just running straight ahead? I think it's a technique to create suspense. But it is illogical.

somewhere..someone ..created that feeling..of "No escape from the psycho killer " no matter haow hard u run or how hard u tried..one of the earlier movie makers probably from Halloween..or Friday the 13th... from the 70s,, so that style of running..but the killer still gonna be just a few steps behind been a regular input for movie suspense..lolz..especially a corny slasher movie like "I know what u did.......

I watched Tin tin too. It was really good! The animation was great. I love Andy Serkis, I always watch all his movies. He is a good actor, too bad he is not that prominent. I hope Hollywood gives him more recognition. 13 going on 30 is the only movie of him that I know that is not animation.

Those are the scariest of all, I think. It's like the killer is stalking them and has all the time in the world. The ones running are in a panic and the killer is calculating and enjoying the hunt.

That is the only thing that kills me about horror movies lol.
Ill be screaming at the tv............... runnnnnnnnnnnn! Oh wait hes still gonna get you. My husband laughs at me when I watch horror movies but I love them.
Now I have seen just couple where the killer actually chases them and those are even better to watch.

I still love watching horror movies but it's really annoying when the characters are so stupid. If only they could make a decent horror movie where the characters actually try and get away while the killer RUNS after them...instead of just calmly walking towards them lol

Right! That's what most horror movies are when the victim is running and the killer is trailing. I think the killer knows the shortcut that's why they would not be lagged behind even if the victim is running. Plus the killer probably put traps to let the victim fall. :) Just a happy thought! :)

Excellent question! Then they usually trip on a twig and sprain their ankle so they can only crawl slowly while watching the person come after them! I guess if they always got away then we would not have much of movie to watch.

I know it really is weird to watch some movies and t.v. shows sometimes. I just find it kinda funny. That the person the killer is chasing after is running like a hysterical person while the killer is pretty much calm and ready to kill the person. But there are times where I have seen the killer run after the victim too. It just makes more sense to me. I guess the killer feels really powerful and stuff.

I guess that's the effects of movie-making.
They would make you believe that the victim is panicking so hard that they couldn't even run straight. Maybe they'd be running in circles, while the killer just calmly walks straight to them.
Of course as a viewer, you're put in the victim's shoes and you feel the panic too.

You know what, it was just movie, and none of them can be true in reality. It is more like created a scary theme, in psychological sense, the killer is in fully confident to catch the victim. While the victim even though they are in a panic mode, they are scared, and they are most likely to be caught in action. That is the horror movies unchanged theme.

Now that you've mentioned it! I've realized it now! It does happen, it's always the victim running for their life screaming whereas the murderer just walks slowly behind them calmly. I remember watching a movie of a little boy running and falling down the stairs while his murderer simply walked behind him. It's funny when that happens, how can a murderer simply walk like a stroll in the park while the victim is like slamming doors and sprinting away. I guess it's all bout the suspense and fear when it happens but it's pretty unrealistic. The victims don't seem to be strong enough to fight back, they all simply run and get caught up with the murderer eventually, one way or another no matter where they run. Strange how no one hears or notices the victim when they're running and screaming for their lives. It's like the murderer has it all planned out.

Well, I'm sure the killer has some Heely's on ore something! :)
But seriously it is crazy that you note this because now that I recognize it, it is kind of odd! How would this even be possible with the explanation of common sense! If the subject is swiftly escaping, and the predator is swiftly walking, he/she shouldn't be able to capture the victim but in most cases they do! This is a crazy discovery, you should call out the cheesy horror film makers!

Like most horror movies and things in them, it is not very realistic but it serves to build fear and to give the impression that escape is impossible. Another thing that they do in such shows and in just plain murder mysteries, etc. is to have someone running from a car that is chasing them and they just keep running straight down the road rather than darting off into woods are something on the side of the road where the car(truck, etc.) can't go.

Yeah, now that you say it, it is quite funny how even though how fast the person runs and hides the killer manages to catch up and surprise them, stand in front of them and attack them. Do they have psychic powers or super speed when we're not looking?

ROFLMAO!!! Yes, right!!! I have wondered the same thing for years. It is just for the effect of it. It is like the bad guy knows about every nook and cranny of the world and suddenly pops up and BOOM!!! Slashes the throat of the victim and we see a lot of gore. It is what makes up a horror movie right.
Take for example the movie that you mentioned. What if the victim get out, sits is a car and zooms of!!! Would it be any fun?

Lol, just notice it, even in Scream or others. The killer is always walking slowly... Why don't the victim stay together and fought back?
But it is still better than putting a light to hardcore s*x scene which is common in some country.
