"On an average, people with type 2 diabetes die 5-10 years before people without diabetes. It affectgs 1 in 5 adults in India. And if not well controlled, diabetes can lead to heart attack, stroke or kidney failure."
"Papa is my hero. He is winning every day against diabetes. We go together for our walks and badminton now. You too can do what my papa does to defeat diabetes.
Upto 80% of type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity."
YES. I went for a walking for 20 minutes today and am feeling good.
Do you enjoy walking and doing more work so that you can avoid diabetes?

I don't do any special exercise or doing sports. I am type of people who don't like to linger in the chair. I am a moving person. I don't drink sugar a lot.I think the only way to prevent us from the diabetes and the only way to reduce the sugar level in our body by consuming plenty of water and exercise as well and ignore foods that contain lots of sugar of course.

Because of the fact that I've known so many people that are diabetics, I know that it is important to keep exercise and healthy eating as a part of your lifestyle and I try to do that to the best of my ability.
However, I also know that though some kinds of diabetes can be reversed by us and our lifestyles, there are other types of diabetes that truly are chronic conditions and I wish that one day there will be a cure for this type of diabetes.

Yeah I know so many people dealing with it now including my dad. He already got it for more than ten years and yes he control his diet and practice regularly.
I think what concern me is, there are few people at my age got it too. One of cousin got it when she was in her twenty but she had worse condition than my dad. She had to do hemodialysis every week because her high blood sugar made her kidney stop to work.

Yes. exercise is the only cure for diabetes mainly. This cannot be avoided. When our physical work comes down diabetes will peep in.
Of course cases involving dialysis are severe cases and that comes due to genes. We can only pray to God that we should not be driven to such level.

There is hereditary predisposition in my maternal lineage. My mother was diabetic and my maternal uncle too. But I admire my mother [who passed away four years' back] who managed to keep it under control through prudent habits all along. The problem with her though was that she was obese too. Even then, with my father being a good support, she would regularly walk a kilometer every day without fail until she had a fall and sustained back injury which immobilized her for a long time. She developed osteoporosis which troubled her quite a bit. But because he maintained her discipline for long time before being indisposed, she endured it well.
Whenever I get a thorough check up, I have had relief from the fact that results for sugar & BP have been negative. I have to guard against overweight though. I follow some workouts from my yoga training in the past.

Happy to know that you are not having diabetes. It is because you are active all the time.
The day you stop being active, one gets diabetes . Be watchful in diet and take up physical work to consume more calories regularly. good day,

I have had diabetes now for about 6 yrs.
It's such a weird disease. Nothing works
the same anymore. Diet and exercise do help
for sure. I find it difficult to keep doing it
all the time though. It's not something I
did before and so it requires self discipline
and so forth. Things that i am not good at like
eating on a schedule. My sleep is so erratic
that I find keeping a schedule very hard.
Any suggestions?

Joini - welcome to mylot. You have narrated differently in a clear manner. You have diabetes for 6 years.Have you been prescribed medicines for diabetes?
In my case though blodd sugar level at random is 150+ doctor has not prescribed any medicine for this but suggested monitored diet and exercise. You say sleep is so erratic and find it hard to manage diet schedule and exercise schedule.
Take care of these two. they are important for keeping the sugar level under control.good day.

I think they are changing their minds
at what numbers are acceptable. Mine
runs about the same as yours and they
have me on Metformin, Glyburide and
Lantus. They are also telling me they want
it below 100. I get to feeling really bad
when it gets that low.

Actually I just learned that today is the Diabetes Day from MSN. This is a new day for me as I haven't heard of it before. But I think this disease has become much more popular since today people have over nutrition and less exercise. I hope it will make people to realize this disease and try to do something to avoid it.

Lifestyle, eating habit are common reasons for diabetes (aside from genetic cases)
My mother in law is also a diabetic patient and is working with aerobics and they have a group who are helping each other and also a counseling mentor with them.

Genetics is the main reason. Apart from that eating habits and life style are important reasons for one to get diabetes or not. My blood sugar level is on the border. With glucose test -- results are not encouraging. But day to day testing with normal food reveals tolerable level of blood sugar. have a good day.

Hi ravisivan,
If we can modify our lifestyle to a healthier one than we can keep diabetes at bay. Health experts have ruled out that the best way to manage diabetes is to walk. By walking we can increase our insulin sensitivity by 3%. It even reduces our BMI,( Body Mass Index)by 1%. A 30 minute walk daily will ensure a better blood glucose level.
It's actually quite a simple theory. When we workout, our muscles absorb blood sugar thus preventing it from building in our bloodstream. The result is lower blood glucose level. That's why a simple form of physical activity like walking is effective to combat diabetes. I hit the treadmill daily for 10 to 15 minutes. However I do feel that a stroll in the park is a better choice as it allows us to connect with nature.

My blood sugar is now normal thanks for early walking daily. I also stay away from sweets like chocolates and drink a herbal tea for maintaining my blood sugar level. I thin sedentary life is one cause of diabetes and do avoid it to be active and have exercise as part of our daily routine.

Yes. After walking I feel good. I feel I have consumed more calories and my blood sugar has come down well.
Sweets I avoid. But temptation to take now and then --I should over come that because I am becoming older day by day and resistance may not be same as it was when I was young.
Happy to know that your husband also spends time in walking. good day.

hi ravisivan its Sunday here in the US so your dad has diabetes but it sounds like he is really taking charge and getting exercise. my doctor told me he wished he could prescribe exercise like a medication as it does so much for us diabetics. since my fall I
have had to use a walker and honestly I have not got my thirty\ minutes of exercise I should be doing.I did enjoy walking now i need to force myself to do it. My doctor found I also have low thyroid so he feels that with the new medication I may be able to lose weight and for a diabetic that really helps too.You have got the
right mind set and I think you will be able to avoid diabetes for
yourself. if you are at all overweight losing a little weight will also help to avoid diabetes, I got it in my forties so am almost 85 as my birthday is Tueday Nov.15 lol.Great discussion

My father is also a diabetic since he was in his late 50's. He's 77 now. And he has a prostate cancer which was discovered more than 7 years ago.
But because he watches his diet well and is always doing exercise, he was able to control his diabetes . For his prostate cancer he chose alternative medicines. They are a costly though, but at least he's still alive, after being told before, by the doctor that he only have 5 years to live.

welcome to mylot. yes. we should take care of health from our childhood. that of course depends on parents. they have to guide us. After becoming adult and also middle aged these problems come and we have to manage with controlled diet and exercise coupled with work and walking.

talking about diabetes, i become scared when i hear such word. it is because we have it in our genes. the irony is that, even though i know the effects of diabetes, i am not doing anything to control my diet and lifestyle. i do it because i still don't manifests the symptoms. but i realize now that, prevention is better than cure. so now, i'm gradually changing my lifestyle. and i hope i won't acquire diabetes when i become older because i want to live longer. :-)

You are expressing hundred per cent same ideas as that of myself--scared. Good there are no symptoms of diabetes. Prevention is better than cure. Happy to know you are gradually changing your life style and you are hopeful that you will not get diabetes. this feeling itself is good.
