Who Cuts Their Own Hair?

I have always had a fascination with cutting my own hair. I have no formal training, but ever since I turned 18, I have not been to a salon. Once I had a friend cut it for me when I was 19, but since then, I've cut it myself. People are usually surprised when I tell them that (or they are just being polite, lol). Last time I cut it about 2 months ago. That time and the time before I cut it on my boat, since that's where I live, in a pocket mirror. It seems to look pretty good, and my boyfriend, who is brutally honest with me, actually admitted it was even in the back and didn't look bad. Who else cuts their own hair? Do you have professional training or are you just adventurous? any funny stories about trying it and not doing so well? Have fun sharing!

Like LilacLady I'm wary of hairdressers because I had long hair and they get overexcited thinking they can do what THEY want with it rather than what YOU want. I do cut my own hair, I've found a layered cut that is really easy to do yourself and nobody has commented that my hair is a mess or looks like a home hair cut! I've cut it shorter than usual at the moment because I'm trying to grow out the permanent dye and go natural again. I keep it just long enough to tie back.

Some folks are really good at cutting their own hair. They have the right kind of scissors and they know how to angle the cuts and so forth. Keeping with the bone structure is important, I know... especially for shorter hair... but I can't do it. I've seen some folks that I know they cut their and it LOOKS like it too. I had my hair cut at one of those low rate salons.. Super Cuts... and the woman chopped me up worse than I could have done.. so it doesn't mean a professional ALWAYS does it better. I had a fit and came back another day to get someone else to fix it for free.

Layers are much easier to pull off, I've used that angle a couple of times when starting out. I have been using reverse layers the last few times. Instead of cutting the outer layers shorter, I cut the inner layers shorter and make the outer ones longer.

Well, it can't hurt to try! If you mess it up, you'll just end up paying the same amount to have it fixed ;) Best bet is to use 2 mirrors and/or a friend with a good eye to tell you how you're doing. If you really trust them, maybe they can do the back for you.

I cut my own hair, I have done so since having several bad experiences with hairdressers, I have long hair which I got the impression hairdressers seem to have a thing about, I seem to know better than the hairdressers how my hair is.

It's definitely a driving force to cutting your own hair when you have bad experiences shelling out money for someone else to mess it up. Good for you for taking control!

I cut my own hair. Sometimes it isnt even but i dont really care, mostly because my hair is curly so nobody notices. I do straighten my hair often and it doesnt show my mistakes eaither :) When i go to a salon they never cut my hair they way i want and i find it easier to cut at home, not only because i dont pay anything but also because i know how i want my hair and it always comes out the way i want :D

I always wanted curly hair! The best I get is sometimes it's really wavy. Nice that it makes it easier to successfully cut it yourself!

I've tried to cut my hair a few times and it looked like I took a machete to it. I let my daughter cut my bangs once, and that was a mistake too. Not looking bad, doesn't necessarily mean it looks good. I've had people I know were just being nice.. but my beautician told me the truth.. and she said it looked like I cut my hair with the lawn mower.

lol It's nice to have someone be honest. I'm lucky my boyfriend is. I'm sure he would tell me if it looked like I used a machete or lawn mower. I'm really not too particular about it looking good, as long as I don't come out looking like Einstein! :)

i cut my own hair, but i only started doing it by accident, as it had got quite long, and so i was tying it back, as it was too long to wear lose, as there is an age at which you can't do this any more. and one day i just got bored with that so i cut it to about shoulder length, its sort of like a bob, with a side parting, but not quite, as it tends to curl the wrong way, outwards instead of inwards, but i like that, so i just let it do what it wants, rather than try to control it. i thought about going to a hairdressers and asking them to do it properly but its incredibly expensive and i quite like how it is anyway.

What a fortuitous spontaneous accident! It's really nice to have control over your own style. Or, rather, lack of control if it comes out just how you like it. Congrats on the success! And on saving the money!

hI! I do cut my own hair but its only a trim because when I go to the salon and would tell them to just trim it they would really cut it long. Oh my ,my hair is so slow in growing. Its fun ! and my sister also tried cutting it for me,forming it into V shape and vice versa. One time she cut it shaggy and I really looked ugly with that hair.hehe. but thank God I have surpassed that look. :))

LOL! That's definitely the fun in it! I'm impressed that you take that chance when your hair grows slowly. My hair grows really fast so it's easier to be brave. It is really annoying when you can't get what you want at a salon! Keep up the good work!

I cut my hair, well I did it one time and it was ok, but most of the time I do it I go to a beauty parlor and they do it for me,what I did some weeks ago by myself was to relaxe my hair with a relaxer it tooks for me three hours because I have a lot of hair, but the sacrify worth because mu hair looks great after that

It's good that you at least tried doing it yourself. It's a fun experience, even feels a little adventurous. But it is a little more convenient sometimes to go to the beauty parlor, especially if you put your hair through special processes like relaxing or perming.

I cut my own hair sometimes, just trim though. I wish I could have some sort of training so that I can actually cut my hair into a new hair style. I can just work around a style I already have and just layer it a bit more and trim some long sides shorter. Of course I can't cut the back of my head and I don't trust my parents or friends so I tend to do to the hair cutters to have my hair cut a little shorter after every term when it grows pretty long. Right now, I'm growing my hair longer but my hair is pretty thin and my hair looks really flat right now. I tried to shorten the layers on the top, but still a little flat I'm trying to find a cheap hair salon but the problem is, they never cut it the way you want it. So it's better to simply cut it yourself. But once cut, and you made a mistake, it's you and that hair for quite a while I just trim so I haven't made really big mistakes that are noticeable.

Yeah, a lot of professionals do their own thing instead of trying to go by their customer's wishes. You really don't need training to try out a new style. I started out by using two mirrors to see the back of my head. As I got better at it, I tried more of my own styles. Your volume issue might have to do with your shampoo, conditioner, or styling products, too. Try changing them up. Another thing that you might try is a vinegar and baking soda rinse instead of washing. That and a little vanilla is what I use on my hair now. First, rinse with vinegar and use it to scrub your scalp. This degreases and cleans your hair and scalp. It will also make a lot of loose hairs easy to comb out. Then, rub some baking soda into both hands and comb in through your hair. The baseness of the baking soda neutralizes the acidity of the vinegar and the sour odor. After applying the baking soda, rinse thoroughly. I find that it kind of bulks my hair up, too, and gives it more volume. The small amount of vanilla extract afterwards is not necessary, it is just for a pleasant odor. I only use a very small amount and apply it the same way I do the baking soda.

Oh, yeah, and like I say in a few comments down about layering...sometimes it helps to divide the layers of hair up from inner to outer layers when cutting and instead of making the outer layers shorter, make the inner layers shorter. That might give you some more volume, too.

I have never tried to cut my own hair. I don't know how and I'm sure that it will be a disaster. I think it's going to be real hard especially about the hair at the back. My mom used to cut my hair when I was younger, but I never tried it.

It is a little bit difficult. When I was starting to do it myself, I didn't know how either. It was when I was a teenager the first time, and I used two mirrors, one in front and one in back, to see what I was doing. I also went really short, so I wasn't worried about it being even. I thought it looked spunky, but my dad disagreed and he sent me to the salon to have it fixed. But that didn't stop me. That experience just solidified my idea that if I messed up I could have it fixed, and I've gotten a lot better over the years.

I haven't experience cutting my own hair, I usually go to the salon and have it cut and shampoo. Those are the benefits of it (shampoo and relax). Based on your story, you are really good in cutting your hair, I must give you a credit for that.

Thanks! That used to be my favorite part of getting a cut at a salon. The shampoo was a nice, relaxing massage for my scalp and it felt so good. I actually don't even use shampoo anymore; I wash my hair with vinegar and then neutralize the sour smell with baking soda and a little bit of vanilla. I also don't wash it as often. I find that it makes my hair less dry and shinier.

I don't cut my own hair because it will be disastrous for my look, but I have a friend that does haircuts and highlights at home. It's an economic solution for me since I cut and dye my hair every 1.5-2 months. She knows my style so I can trust her that she will do what I ask. I have cut my dad's hair once and I can say that I was proud of my self for the result as it was really good. But it's a lot easier to do a men's short haircut.

Yeah, and it's a lot easier to do someone else's hair. It's good to have a professional friend, though. I had my hair cut once in high school by a friend's mom and she did a nice job. Another nice alternative for saving money, too!

I haven't tried cutting my hair because I don't know how. I also don't go to an expensive salon to cut my hair for me. I usually have my mom's friend to cut it for me since she knows what looks good on me. ^_^

That's another good way to save money! It's nice to have someone reliable to do it for you. I didn't know how when I started either, though. I just figured that if I messed up I could always go to a professional after, lol. Not that I'm suggesting you do that, but if you're in a tight spot, it's a refreshing way to think about it.

When I was in high school I used to cut my hair. Whenever i see my unruly when I was at my younger age, I would definitely look for a pair of scissors and cut a handful in front of a mirror. And I would usually use headband to hide uneven cuts! hahaha! Now I learned how to take care anf manage my still unruly hair. Just search for mild products/treatments for hair, depends on types of hair.

Unfortunately, I could not do my own haircutting. But I know a person here in my work who is doing his own haircutting, and I was amazed on how he did it because I've seen him doing it. When my daughters are still small, I do not bring them to the haircutters but do it myself. But now that the eldest is already a teenager, I stopped doing it and just let her go to the nearest haircutter. Anyway, haircutting here is not too expensive unlike in other countries. Here it cost around $1 only.

i do it twice before, but it look bad, but most of the time, those 5 year old children are often cut their hairs especially if the adult is not looking around, maybe due to curiosity and they already know how to use a scissor. so, scissor is another one thing to be aware off, because children really love to experiment it, especially those staplers that they accidentally stapled their thumb.
• United States
15 Nov 11
funny that you should mention that kids do those things. I actually used to use my scissors at school to trim random hairs in 1st grade. I found out later that my teacher was concerned because I guess that it's a sign of abuse or mental disruption or something, but I just remember seeing my mother looking in her lighted vanity mirror and trimming off her split ends, so I think I was copying her. I also, a few years later, stapled my thumb with an industrial stapler at the warehouse my dad worked at when I was helping with paperwork or something.

I've been living here in the US for almost 20 years and only been to a barber probably 5 times tops.the last time was about 14 years ago.As you know the cost of a haircut here range from $7 to upwards of $15 plus tip. For over 10 years I had been cutting my own hair,It's not that hard and those cheap trimmer of course comes in handy, thus saving me quite a chunk of money....besides ,I have this bad habit of pulling my hair so I keep it short, once every 2 months. I only go to the barber or salon whenever I go back to the Philippines where it cost approximately $1 for a haircut, massage and a shave.(talking about value...Whew!what a deal)

It is fun to try! And you can always go to the salon and have it fixed if it gets messed up. Cool that you like to try new things! Go for it with the long hair!

hey cloudflix hope not late to respond on this issue. back to 2009 I start to cut my own hair, using nothing but scissor and mirror and I can tell you the result is somehow more awesome than the barber. hahaha I admit it I don't have the training or whatsoever professional training at all lo and why i do cut my own hair? well it is an issue of tight pocket money, i glad I cut it myself.
