Why Do People Call India As A Poor Country?

Why do people call India a poor country? i think that india(my country) is a well developed country! but my foreign friends say that India is not a technologic or a devloping country! I dont believe that!! But still there is still something in my mind that india is a polluted country and developing very slowly!!! I think my friend said a little bit right that it is not a technologic country but of course it is not a poor country! any points in which I can know the true proof that it is a nice country or not. Or just because of pollution there is less tourism compared to its other neighbor country's? Ty
