I use speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
But if you use DELL laptop you must set DELL support in configure/option page.
For me, it is the most accurate temperature monitoring.
For reducing the temperature, you must put cooling pad. But if possible choose the one which has external power source. Not from USB port. I am always afraid that taking power from USB port will increase the temperature.
The other thing, how old your laptop is? Have you ever clean the fan of your laptop? It is better that you have mini vacuum cleaner to clean the fan regularly.
The last thing, check at your task manager. In Performance Tab, look at the CPU usage history. Is it always more than 50%? if yes then go to processes Tab, sort by CPU and look which process that utilize CPU so much. If you only use the laptop in normal way, the most common high CPU usage are Antivirus performing background test and Internet Browser that never been closed for a long time or opening such heavy flash web page. Or the worst you have virus inside.
If it is not more than 50% may be it need to be cleaned.
Wishing your laptop is Ok and not burnt like mine (I use it for heavy 3D gaming :( )

Nowadays, it does not matter the brand. I got good brand and still burnt, although fortunately my colleague can fix it somehow (I do not know the detail). However, it still sometime has glitch.
And I only play the game on PC.

it strange, a software that can measure laptop temperature? uhm.... find it on CNET, or other site that give a free legal software.
oh yeah, likeother response, you need to use a laptop fan dock (whatever the name, i like to call it cooling pad). it more better than must use software that can make your laptop more do a hard work.

i have been affiliation by 2 software site inculding CNET. if the software that can make your laptop or PC work with easy and smooth, i know. maybe it usefull, cause more light and smooth your computer (laptop or PC) work, the heat will be decrease.

adhyz82,
As long as you do not overclock or place your laptop on a mattress which might block the ventilation for your equipment, you probably do not need to find such software to measure your laptop's temperature.
Other than that, you will probably need to work in a well ventilated and preferably an air condition or well ventilated and cool environment will also help to keep your equipment from overheating and/or explosion.
Or, you can always get a laptop fan dock (USB powered) which is created for this cooling purpose.

Laptop fan dock -- I am hearing for the first time. Otherwise ordinary table fan can also be used. It depends on weather conditions also. In cooler places laptop may not get heated up quickly.
However it is advisable to check up the reason for laptop getting heated up and take steps.

i just notice that there are two types of laptop fan docks:
1. Plastic Casing
2. Aluminum Casing
i think the aluminum casing is the most preferred (if there is available selling in your area) because i makes a cooling output effect 3 times compare to those plastic casings of laptop fan dock.
although pricey, but an aluminum and a large fan propellers is better compare to two or three cute propellers.

One of the reasons for laptop getting heated up is malfunctioning of fan inside laptop. If you keep it on your lap you will be feeling the heat.

I think you can get the software from brothersoft, which provides all important files or software. I think your laptop is becoming hotter because the fan inside it will not be working properly. Look it out.
Is your laptop getting restarted or something like that ?
I am asking so because I has faced the same problems. Mostly the hotness is due to the problem with proper function of fan.

Modern bios have a section that checks your motherboard temperature. Have you booted up into bios to check if yours has this? I can't tell you how since that depends on the make of your laptop, but usually you'll see a message pop up when you're first booting up that says to press some key to enter setup.
