SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS: Are they safe or not?

I am not against to the new technology because I myself is also an internet surfer.But did you notice the most popular social media networks that are being used today? I was shocked when I log in to my accounts I saw lots of pornographic pictures that are being downloaded.
Now can you still say that it's safe to be in this site and I know many minors are on this site.As a mom I am worried also.But maybe one thing we can do is to educate the kids.

]. I have been member of a large number of social media networks. In fact, over the years I have added to so many sites that I'm afraid I am losing count & track of some of them 
. But I had a reason: I had to promote my blog and one way was to make friends, engage in meaningful discussions and draw more visitors. It has paid off reasonably well for me.
The threat of young ones being lured into obscenity in this age of openness and free access is too real to be discounted. But it is difficult to swim against the tide. A majority of the social media sites are created with a good purpose. I watch loads of intelligent & meaningful interactions throughout the social media. Of course, they also have adult content sections but most have rules to prenotify them.
There is huge benefit for people from the social media sites but there also some inherent risks for indiscreet users. So wisdom is in making best use of them for all that is good while building safeguards for inappropriate use. We therefore have a responsibility to counsel our children. We must do our best & hope for their self will will deter them from wrong use.

Hi,
Yes you are right,as parents big responsibilities is to guide our children's always in everything they do everyday.Little bit depress what I saw in some social media networks today that is why told our minors here to be careful in using the internet.
But we some actions just today,we install a secure browser that will be going to use by the kids maybe much better this way.:)

I think that like every product of technology brings us convenience but can easily be abused and social networks are no exception. You are right that we should monitor our kids closely and try to be there with them as much as they can and lead them to interesting and educational websites instead.
