When Cooking Carrots Would You Prefer Them To Be Sweet?

The tip for sweet carrots is to add sugar or brown sugar to your cooking water when the carrots are cooking. (I add several Tablespoons of sugar or brown sugar (but pack the brown sugar. Another tip is when growing carrots do not dig them up until after you have a hard frost (that is for those of you that get frost). After you carrots are done don't forget to drain and add butter. Mmmmm. Please share your tips on how you get your carrots to be sweet. Happy Cooking.

I add several Tablespoons, but you could also just add a teaspoonful. I have also seen where orange juice is added along with the sugar. The butter also seems to help with the sweetening. Most of the time I just cook the carrots without sugar at all and only use butter, and they taste great and have a sweet taste.

To be honest I don't know why people cook carrots, they are so nice raw, I never cook carrots, I am not sure if they are better for you cooked or raw but they are so nice raw.

I would say they are better for you raw. Cooking them gives them another completely different taste. I love them both ways. Have a nice evening.

Good Morning! I never peel carrots before cooking...just a really good scrub! Nor do I add sugar to the cooking/serving! I find if carrots are cooked with the skin on, a lot of the natural sugars are in the skin..at least enough to keep their lovely flavour! For a special occasion, butter, dill, and a touch of honey! I truly am concerned over the amount of sugars that are in foods, today..I prefer to stay away from adding processed sugars to foods.

It really scares me, the amount of sugars in foods today. You can hardly pick up an item without HFC in it (high fructose corn syrup)! Just recently there was a discussion here on peeling carrots ( good one)and I was surprised to read that a lot of us don't! Even if I have old gnarled carrots..and do peel them, I always save the peels (freeze) for soup stocks!

I hear you about the adding sugar to food items. I like to stay away from it too. I just might switch to honey as it is all natural. The only time I add sugar is if the carrots are bitter. We have decided to try the carrots with the skins on. I guess we are so use to the way we were raised eating them. We have heard that many do not peel the carrots. I will give it a try, thank you for the tips. Have a nice day.

I know what you mean pergammano about the sugars in foods today. Also the salt. I can't believe how much salt needs to be in foods to make it taste good. I try to cut down as much as I can when making homemade foods from scratch. I never thought of saving the peels from the carrots for soup stocks. I save celery ends, etc., for soup stock. I will have to give them a try. I have always peeled my carrots. Thank you for your comments.

I never really thought about adding sugar to my carrots when I am steaming them. I don't really need to make them sweet for me to enjoy them. I would much rather have them just plain steamed. They are still good for you anyway. I don't know if cooking the carrots would get rid of the nutrients and make them less healthy. But I do like them cooked and soft to eat.

Occasionally carrots can be bitter. I grown my own, so if there is a bunch of them that are bitter, I will add the sugar. Otherwise I just add butter. I like to eat carrots raw too. Especially if I have a dip made for them. I too like mine cooked and soft to eat. Have a nice evening.

I sauté carrots cut into sticks with a little butter, a teaspoon of sugar or honey and the juice of an orange. Keep on the heat until most of the orange juice is evaporated and the syrup begins to thicken and turns straw coloured.

Iuse brown sugar and butter too. I recently made them when my little granddaughter was here......she has never had them that way. She dug into them like she was eating her last meal! We were all shocked! I love them sweet.

Carrots taste the best if they are sweet. Many times I can cook them without using sugar or brown sugar. I will taste them raw and if they taste sweet then I do not add any type of sugar. Butter just makes them taste that much better. If adding the brown sugar and butter helps your granddaughter to eat carrots then that is a good thing. Have a great day. Hugs

I steam my carrots. After they are steamed I mix a couple tablespoons of butter with honey in a small sauce pan.Once it is melted and blended I drizzle it over the carrots. Honey is always good for you unless you have an allergic reaction to it.

sounds good Marie, thank you for sharing. Honey definitely sounds healthier. Leaving the skins on and steaming them will definitely keep the nutrients in them.

You are most welcome. Carrots always seem to be one of the longest cooking vegetables. So steaming them retains the nutrients in them and then tossing them with the buttered honey adds a little more nutrients too.

I'd rather eat carrots raw. I never liked cooked carrots for some reason they don't agree with my taste buds. I would rather eat sweet potatoes.
