Book, e-book or audiobook...

I love reading books. Unfortunately, I got little time to read. My co-teacher asked me if I tried listening to an audiobook. I said I haven't tried it out. So, I did. But my attention span in listening isn't that long. I need to frequently check myself if I am still listening. I told my friend about this. She said that her husband loves listening to audiobook, and almost cried when he heard the ending of Harry Potter.
I also tried reading e-books. However, it makes my eyes watery because I have to stare at the monitor screen for a long time.
If you are the one reading, do you prefer paperback/hardbound books, e-books or audiobooks? Is listening to an audiobook as effective for you as in actually reading a book?

there's nothing like reading a paperback...i guess it has somethin to do with the actual experience of turning the pages, the smell of the paper even. so i usually read a paperback when im just chillin
but for the ease of transport and travel, i have loads of ebooks in the kindle app of my phone. havent experienced watery eyes though yet, maybe you just need to adjust the screen of the reader youre using:the brightness/contrast and choose a background thats easy on your eyes
i dont like audiobooks, i find myself too impatient and not at pace with the reading. i also at times become annoyed at the voices the reader adopt for the characters :P

I agree that the reader can sometimes the reader can affect one's reading experience. Audiobook manufacturers should choose the voice talents they are using very carefully.
By the way, I like your profile pic, aimhrea. Sailor Moon used to be my favorite cartoon character.

I remember that in high school the best place to hangout is the bookstore. I feel so much at home there.

@Girl_thinking you can start out with downloading free ebooks from amazon/smashwords (both are legal sources). if you dont have a kindle, just download the kindle app to your android phone or netbook/laptop ;)

I'm in love with my physical copies of books. The smell that radiates from them, the crinkling of turning the pages ... ah, it's wonderful. I've spent hours in libraries, perusing the books and just getting lost in the quiet atmosphere.
Audiobooks really annoyed me back when I was in school since it was a common way to keep the class together during assigned reading times with the novel we were supposed to read. The pace was always too slow and I would end up reading ahead, then spend the rest of the time spacing out or doodling instead of taking notes on the book. E-books are good when I'd rather not lug around a heavy novel, but the screen tires my eyes out sometimes, no matter how much I fiddle with the settings.

Hi polaroidsredwine! It is obvious from your writing style that you are a book lover and are influenced by the books you read. I like the way you write. (",)

Hi Professor Shibham! I like hardbound books too. However, they are much more expensive than paperback and not as handy/portable. I do invest in a couple of great hardbound materials though.

textbook, audio book and e-book are different from each other and has their own properties of advantages. Textbook is great for easy references however it will accumulate some spaces on our home. Ebook is best to read in kindle and not on monitor of our pc, I don't usually read it just like you it hurts also my eyes. My favorite is audiobook cause I can listen to it wherever I go even on traveling.

The problem with textbooks is it does need space in the house. I often find myself not knowing where to put mine. My shelves are already full.

I find it very sad that we are coming into
a time where books will not be as popular as
they once were.
I think Ebooks and so forth are great for those
who need or want them. I personally prefer an
old fashioned book. There is just something about
a room full of books that I just love.
I try to read ebooks and have the same problem
as you. I don't like reading online as much and
I find my attention wondering.

Hi joni! Yeah, I like the old-fashioned way better too. I think there's nothing more nostalgic than the scent of paper. Many people nowadays have not set foot (not even once) on a library. Even the concept of library is changing.

I prefer E-buk and I put it in my phone so when I get bored, I could just read it in my phone than carry the book all the time. I could also save money with e-buk because I could download them free in the internet. I don't mind hardbound books either. I haven't tried an audiobook but I think it is not for me since I have a short attention span ^_^

When speaking of ease of access and value for money, I'd definitely go for e-book. Thanks for your response, bewitchingmelody.

I bought audio book too but I don't find it great or relaxing. Although I love storietellers I don't like the way they tell at the audiobook. Also an audiobook takes away a part of the pictures I make of a story/situation/person when I read myself.
An other "side-effect" for me is that if I listen to an audio-book I would do something else in between. So the way you listen to it, is the same as when I hear the radio on the background while cleaning up.
Perhaps I would do it again if I am very sick and bored, not able to hold a book myself to kill time. Although.. if I am that sick again I want to lay in peace not hear anything.
I prefer books, real ones. Also a pdf book on a screen (computer/laptop/ebook reader) is not the same. It's harder to concentrate to read. Also a screen makes it harder to read outside, with certain lightfalls.
I think the relaxing thing about books is you hide yourself somewhere with it, get pulled into that story and stay there in that great world.
Also, only reading yourself will improve your language (the way you speak, expressions, the way you write etc). So no.. listening to an autidobook completely different from reading a book. But it's a good invention if you are blind, can't hold a book and have nobody who can read for you.

Hello eunique!
I love reading books too but lately time is not allowing me to read books, I got busy with mylot and other online activities I have not tried listening to an audio book. And I also think my concentration would shift from time to time, and won't understand it, unless I see some figures... like watching a movie. I'd prefer paperback/hardbound books because I can go reading it anytime I want to. Sometimes an ebook gives me eyestrain. So traditional reading is still the best for me.
