I have put a piece of soap in a sock at the bottom of my bed!!!
Why??????
Because I have been told and have been reading to night on the pc that it prevents night time cramp in the lower leg!!!
Will this work???? I don't know and I don't really see how it will, but since I have been getting terrible cramp in my lower leg, waking up two or three times with cramp and having to walk around the bedroom until it has gone.
I don't know why I have been getting cramp in my leg, only thing I can link it with is with eating food in the evening and little food means little cramp and a big in take of food means anogy cramp. But I have also gone all evening without eating anything and still get cramp!!
So I am at a big lost.
Anyone suffer from cramp in the lower leg during the night?
Anyone know any cures on how to prevent lower leg cramps?
Many thanks in advance for your help and knowledge

I read that the soap has to placed in the bed at your feet. It works if cramps are due to a lack of potassium. A scientific explanation is that traditional soaps are made with potash and that potassium ions from the soap are penetrating the skin to fix themselves on muscular cells, filling the lack of potassium. The soap has to be a traditional soap like Marseilles or Alep soaps.

The soap I have just put at the bottom of my bed is a white bar of soap. Just a bar of Tesco's value soap.
I don't go ot bed until about 12am tonight so its a long while off , plus tomorrow I shall be out and busy so won't be able to report back until after tea tomorrow if it has worked or not.
Now I know why the soap is used.
Thank you so much my dear friend for explaining

A better and more effective way to get potassium is to eat a banana or orange or other fruit that is high in potassium or drink orange juice. Also, making sure to drink a lot of water can help cramps, because you can get cramps from not being properly hydrated. The water also helps the body to get rid of sodium and other toxins that are not healthy.

Cramps,oh god,it hurts a lot.Mainly with the legs both the thighs get cramps and sometimes below the knee and it hurts badly .
Some say that not to eat potato ,becasue potato can cause cramps.i dont know how much truth is there in it.
Solution which i say to my father is just dont move off all your body.Just have patience at that time,if not the cramp will come again and again.Just you have to sit on the bed because that comes only when we are sleeping or siting for a long time,So while sleeping when the cramp comes in the leg then just put the legs straight and sit .Just move the feet up and down and try doing it with both the feet. This will make some movement with the nerves of the legs which can clear the cramps very fast.
Then when the cramp goes just sit like that for a while to make sure that is gone. Then stand and walk ,for a while.
Hope this would help .Because i have experience with it and also i suggest my father when he wakes up in the middle of the night with the cramps in the leg and feeling in pain.
Some say pour water ,running water can cure. But if this becomes a habit ,and if u are in such a place where there is not water or u are not in a possition to get water treatment then it becomes a problem.Mainly in functions or when u go out of home.
Have a nice time

Hello Anne. Yes I have had leg cramps I read about this in an old time magazine I used to get on line. A Doctor had told this woman about the soap and it was to be ivory soap. But I have used zest brand so I don;t think the brand or type matters. I don't put it in a sock but put it on the arch of my foot. The leg aches go away.

I have not heard about this one about the sock and soap but I do know one needs to drink a lot of water to avoid getting cramps. Try it and see. The water therapy seems more real than the sock stuff!

Huh? Why would you do that? What is the rationale behind the action?
It sounds like you are lacking potassium or something in your system. You can get cramps if your electrolytes are off just a bit. Eating a banana or two a day might help your cramps. It makes more sense to eat a banana than to put soap in your bed.
Also if you get a cramp, get up and stand on your legs. I've had cramps and the only way for it to go away is to stand on my legs. I can't keep bananas in the house, or I would eat one every day. I get them and they are gone before a day or two.

Potatoes are actually a good source of potassium as well. It is funny since I am reading up from the bottom how many of us are recommending staying hydrated and eating bananas, but it is tried and true.

The soap is interesting but I wonder what exactly will do. And what kind of soap. There is a big difference between soap and soap nowadays (where it's made of).
I have (had) periods in my life I had terrible cramp too. Already as a kid I had them. A bit weird they are. Starting in toe, or weird spot, next food or leg or strange part in the leg. Frequently I can feel the cramp come up and if I am able to relax (not bending the opposite or so) it can go to.
Week ago I was walking long time with pain, and the stairs up and down in the hope the cramp would leave me. It did not. In the end I went back to bed, tried to ignore it (it's hard) and then it was gone.
I read it can be a lack of calcium (can be normal) but personally I think it's not true in my case. I wonder if it can be the result of a kind of dehydration.
Interested to hair if the soap will work although I think it's hard to check since I don't have cramps every day, sometimes months nothing or longer...
Plus sooner or later cramp will always be gone.
I assume it can be caused by kind of spasme (nerve system) as well, of if you are really exhausted. So many reasons.

This is something that I have not heard. But there are so many home remedies out there. Have you found it on more sites than just one. I usually read the reviews from others that have tried it before. I hope that it works for you and you have a restful sleep. My son has really painful leg crams often, so I know how bad it can get

You are right, the food intake has a bit to do with the cramps. What works best for my husband is to eat a banana after supper, and one in the morning. Bananas are high in potassium and magnesium and help prevent cramps in the legs. I take a magnesium supplement. Other people swear by drinking Gatorade or other drinks that replace electrolytes. Someone here was telling me about the soap as well, and it makes no sense to me. Wearing a pair of warm socks to bed would make sense for preventing cramps, though. The other thing you can do is before bed do some stretches. Stand just a little more than arms length from the wall and lean until your hands touch the wall and you feel a stretch in the calves of your legs. Do wall push ups, just a few and the legs should be all better for the night.

I used to suffer from night time leg cramps and the blooming hurt! I lost a lot of weight and they seem to have eased to the point of eradication since. It got to the point where I used to not look forward to bed because I was sure that I would be up in the night - and I often was. At least you have clean feet!!

hi anne for me I get terrible leg cramps if I am low on potassium or if I did not drink enough water that day or used too much salt on my food, eating several bananas a day will prevent leg cramps as they are full of potassium. quinine water will also stop the cramps if you have some available when you have the cramps.I get them in my calves also in my right ankle too. It is not what you eat so much as not drinking enough water and also getting too much sodium as both upset your blood chemistry.bananas really do help and they are also good for you in the vitamin department too.hope these ideas help as I know how painful they are as I have had to walk them off too.

I had forgotten about doing the quinine. In the summer sometimes we get Tonic water and mix it with orange juice. Again, it is potassium in the orange juice, and the tonic water cuts the sugar intake as well.

Magnesium and calcium deficiency can cause cramp in the leg. We need a lot of self balance. Consuming a lot of bananas boiled or baked potatatoes without removing the skin tomatoe sauce, lima beans and raisins are very helpful. Sometimes you may suddenly get the crump in the leg during the night. It is very much disturbing. Sometimes boiling the water with salt and leaving the feet in the rather warm water is a great remedy for many ailments. One should have a calm disposition and a determined will to take care of one self. Many will give ideas but ultimately our inner intuition will guide us. Enough to have a motivation with peaceful disposition.

Wow, so many ideas, thank you so much for your quick reponse,
I do eat quite a few baked potatoes during the cause of the week, I have them with salad and cheese or with fresh cooked veggies.
I do like raisins, but too many tend to give me gas and wind!!!

One of the people I clean for also swears by this and has a bar of soap at the bottom of his bed. He doesn't get cramp anymore! But he hasn't long been on holiday to his son's house and his son forgot ot put a bar of soap at the bottom of the bed and the first night he was there he got really bad lower leg cramp the first night he was there!!!
I think some of it may be in the mind, but if it works!!!!!!

I am sure such problems occur due to circulatory problems which are supposed to be due mainly with age. Alternative medicines like homeopathy is known to offer best cure for such complaints. The permanent fix takes a little time but the cure is for sure. Do you have a good homeopathic practitioner in the vicinity?
Don't take this as a prescription but I have reasonable idea that a remedy called Cuprum Metallicum is the remedy. However, a qualified homeopath will find an individualized remedy by taking into account a number of other concomitant symptoms and associated factors. With a little study, you may also find a remedy yourself from an online remedy finder software at http://www.abchomeopathy.com
The site is quite user friendly. Unlike Allopathic remedies, there is no risk of very strong adverse side effects but there are some simple rules to be followed for deriving the full benefits.
Hope you will be out of it soon.

I could tell you a few things about agonising cramps in the feet and legs at night but you already know what I'm going to say.
Check with your GP first but magnesium is supposed to be good. I'm still getting smaller cramps but it's only been just over a week since I took the tablets. You need to check with your doc in case you are taking any other meds and the magnesium may be contraindicated. I've found wearing socks in case my feet get cold helps too.
Apparently the muscle goes into spasm (agony) when it is starved of oxygen...why this happens, I don't know. Rubbing the spot seems to be effective but not if it's a big cramp involving toes (bent over backwards as if you need to call an exorcist), feet and legs...walking is the best thing. Shouting "CRAP! CRAP! CRAP!" seems to help as well.

I've read somewhere that it could be diabetes.
Instead of walking around the room, just sit up and stretch your leg muscles towards your feet, basically arching your foot towards the floor and that will help the muscle relax and it takes less time.
Leg Cramps really suck! Especially if you have them in both legs at the same time.

That's happened with me before, having to get up and walk around but it wasn't easy to get up and walk around either as for me a shooting pain grabbed me while I was getting up. A few months ago I had leg cramps almost every night in both legs. I hope yours finally went away.

That is a funny one I just wonder if it would be any good! I suffer from cramps and it bothers the hell out of me really! when my mum was in a low salt diet the docs recommended a banana a day that would give you the amount of potassium you need for the day...and you know what? it works it really does just try it and see how you feel. I hope it helps.

Hi Anne! I was told that leg cramps are usually caused by low potassium. Eating potassium rich foods or taking a vitamin could really help you. That's what the doctor told me to do when my daughter was waking up with cramps in her calves in the middle of the night. It worked. She really never suffered from them again.
Take care and good luck.

It depends on why you are having cramps. If it's from over use you just have to slow down. But you can also have them if you are used to walking a lot or running a lot and just stop. Or they can be because you do not eat enough calcium or potassium. I don't think the soap will have anything to do with them though...

I don't really hold much for the soap, but at least I will be able ot say that I tried it!!!
I think its linked with potassium so tomorrow I am gonig to change the time when I eat my banana and see if that helps.
I'm loving all this advice, ideas, cures and reasons why you think it happens, hope others are finding it very good reading.
I'm finding it very good reading.
