For the past few months I have been having problems sleeping. Doctor has given me a light dose of sleeping pills to be taken every night. I am reluctant to have the pills every night but doctor says dont worry it will not become a habit. But still I have been avoiding and take it only after I am unable to sleep for two to three days at a stretch. Any other suggestions as to how to put myself to sleep?

so sorry to hear that you are not getting a good night’s sleep but I really have no advice for you. On some nights when I can’t sleep for any particular reason, I tried a lot of things like counting sheep or backward counting but nothing really worked. You may try reading a book; if that tires you out, you will fall asleep. I can’t do that coz of poor eyesight. I’ve heard that warm milk had before bed induces a good sleep; you can try that out but not sure.

if tension is the cause, then if you have time, try out meditation. its the best to calm your mind and remove stress.

I have tried warm milk but that did not work. Reading is out of the question because of my eye sight. I dont want to fall asleep with my specs on. Went to the doctor and he says that because of tension I am not getting proper sleep. Either forget about all the problems or take sleeping pills. No much choice here.

Hello, it is experience that using sleeping pill is not a good practice. It will be your habit and in future your dose also increased. If at present you are using .25mg than after some days you will required .5mg. It is my experience. So avoid it and use some other thing to sleep.

Yes I agree that sleeping pills not not at all a good practice and that is why I do not want to take it regularly. But then I end up staying awake till past midnight and I need to wake up early to go to work so that is a big problem for me.

For that past 30 years or so, I have not slept for long periods - and certainly not for the 8 hours a night that is suggested. I used to worry a lot about it, until I met a friend one day and he said that he slept about 4-5 hours a night and never worried about it. Later then I got trained as a therapist, and discovered that people get more stressed worrying about how little they sleep than how they are really feeling. The stress in turn, makes them feel tired and exhausted and it becomes a vicious circle as they can't sleep worrying about it. If a person can stop worrying about time spent sleeping, it makes the situation a lot better. I sleep on average 5 hours a night, sometimes less, sometimes a little more. I meditate every morning for around an hour. The helps me become more centered and totally detached from worrying about it. _Derek

I am not so much worried about the number of hours I sleep, My problem is that due to lack of sleep I am tired the whole day. And the doctor says there is too much fluctuation in my blood pressure due to this. I am trying meditation now every morning.

Most of the time I have no problem but sometimes due to my mind being preoccupied it does evade me and when that happens I 'count sheep'. You can do it too. Start counting from 1000 backwards and see if it works with you. Taking pills is the last thing I would recommend for you.

I will start counting backwards and see if it works. Because the last thing I want is taking sleeping pills for the rest of my life.

When our mind is agitated or we question the situation we are put in --we may not get sleep. While in service I have had a few nights when I could not sleep because I use to worry about a problem--which did not occur later on--same way now whenever I start thinking about an issue over which I cannot act immediately then I may not get sleep. Before going to bed make your mind lighter by talking to your close ones happily or watch for a few minutes comedy in tV and then pray and go to bed. You may get sleep. However if doctor has prescribed light dosage of sleeping pill it can be taken because you need sleep well so that you can work well next day in the office. have a good day.

I am having quite a few problems in life due to which I think I am not getting sleep. And these problems will not be getting solved soon. And I do not want to spend sleepless nights for the next few years. But at the same time I do not want to make myself dependent on sleeping pills. I want an alternate solution.

I am also having a lot of problems/issues about children/grand children. I simply set aside all of them when I go to sleep--I satisfy myself like this-- after I am going to be there for a few years and my children will live for many more years after that and they will manage. Are we teaching our children to breathe-no. they get it of their own accord. same way they will manage their problems. If we think we are big to solve all problems that will create tension in us. I will not say mine is a right approach but that is what is helping me.

you could also try looking at you sleeping habits. i've been told its bad to do other non-sleep related tasks on one's bed like working or reading; also, try to ask yourself how you started to have problems with sleeping as it may be a symptom of something else, better be sure than sorry right? :)

Hi,you know, i think to have the ability to sleep very well is a big blessing. So many people are bothered with sleepless nights. Me too, sometimes have problems to fall into sleep. or can't sleep very well. This happens when i got something in my mind. Sometimes it is thing in office, sometimes it is about my kids. There are so many ways to help one fall into sleep. But we often find they have very little use when we have sleep problem. The more you want fall into sleep, the harder you can make it. I think it is better to not take pills, because all the pills have side effects on our health. And though they maybe have little help, we should try to use some of the methods, such as: drink some milk, have a good wash on our feet, choose the right pillow and bed. Wish you can have good sleep as soon as possible.

Am now trying to change my pillow and bed to see if that makes any difference. May be a warm bath in this cold weather may be helpful. Have tried having warm milk for some time but that did not make much of a difference.

Well if you engage in a daily workout for at least an hour preferably in the morning you will find no problem in getting good sleep. I also do advice you more fruits and veggies and take also lecithin food supplement. You may also get lecithin from natural sources such as egg yolks, liver, peanuts, whole grains, milk, and soybean.

Since I have a full time job and spend four hours a day travelling to and fro to office and back I think that is enough exercise for me. As far as eating is concerned I will try and change my diet a bit and see if that makes a difference.

good day to you mayka123, there were some nights wherein i do also experiencing that same situation. where i ended up sleepless. and whenever i am encountering this type of situation, i am just doing only one thing, that is to pray the rosary prayer. i am not sure, if this is also applicable to your end, as maybe, we have a different beliefs. and praying the rosary is not common at your end. so, perhaps, if you can recite a little prayer based on your belief, asking for a grace that God will grant you a sound sleep every night. and this regard, you need not to drink any medicine or take that sleeping pills anymore. hope you will find yourself having a sound sleep soon.

Dont worry I too say the rosary every day. And then after the rosary my mind wanders and I lie awake thinking and dont get sleep. If it was just a few days I would have managed but now it has been several weeks and that has been worrying not only me but also my doctor.

i often get good nights sleep every night. i think you can try to take a warm bath before you sleeping, make yourself being relax, it will make our body easier to get sleep. and maybe if you dont turn off your light in your room, now try it. i think it really useful. sleeping in the dark is better for our body also. and if you still cant get better sleep, you should ask doctor, maybe doctor have any suggestion for you. try to get information about some habits that will make you easier to get sleep every night okay.

I always sleep in a completely dark room. I cannot get sleep with the lights on. Have been trying a warm bath every night now. Doctor had suggested a pain killer and sleeping pill. Pain killer because I have been having a body ache everyday for the last few days because of stress at work and travelling. I have been trying to avoid that. Now have planned to take leave from work for a few days and take complete rest and see whether that makes a difference. May be a change in the days schedule will make a difference.

I would also not suggest to you to take medicines for your sleep. There are natural remedies that you can try such as drinking warm milk before sleeping, having some light exercises and listening to some music as you sleep. This may have some soothing effect sometimes.

I have tried drinking warm milk for some nights but it did not work. So gave up on that because as it is I have dinner quite late because of my busy schedule so having milk after that makes me feel too full.

One thing that might help is that if you get up for ten or fifteen minutes if you can't sleep and do something to distract you from the fact that you can't sleep. Then, you should go back to bed and practice some deep breathing techniques and you should find that you are able to sleep a little bit easier than before. Make sure you give your brain at least an hour to wind down before you try to go to bed, as you'll find that you can sleep a lot easier if you're feeling peaceful rather than feeling agitated before you go to sleep.

I have been advised deep breathing exercises by a lot of friends. Am trying it out and will see if it makes a difference. Unwinding an hour before sleep is impossible because there are upteen things to be done after I come home from work.

I don't get a good night's rest every night but I try to get one as often as possible because usually my days are long and sometimes strenuous. So what I attempt to do is to get 8 hours of sleep a day minimum when in reality I may obtain 6 to 7 because getting 8 is super hard with a busy schedule! I haven't had any nightmares or upsets in a while either so sleep is pretty good and comforting. Plus my bed helps me to recharge my batteries quickly and effectively!

I wish my bed helped me recharge my batteries. In fact is is draining me completely. I hardly get a couple of hours or so sleep and that too not too sound sleep and that makes me feel tired all day long. Since I work out of home I have to be on my feet the whole day. And the tired feeling does not help me perform well.

I have had some nights when I slept less or minimal, sometimes due to illness or sometimes due to mental stress. But taking sleeping pills is not the ideal way, if you ask me and I have never tried it. I have learned from my experience that the best way to get sleep in the night is to go to bed with a calm and empty mind not too much worrying about what to do the next day.

I used to have a good night sleep before but now that I have a two week old son it's hard for us to sleep at night. Because he is awake at night we have to be awake too. It's kinda hard when you have a baby but being a parent is the most wonderful thing that happened to me.

CONGRATULATIONS to you dear. Having a baby in the house brings another kind of happiness. Yes it is difficult to sleep at night with a baby around. So the best way to adjust is to sleep when the baby is sleeping. That way you too will get some rest.
