BE AWARE.....!!!
Many of us can't do without " Maggi " especially when one is away from home, in a foreign land. Here is a piece of information to share so that we can remove the potential health hazard of consuming Maggi.
Maybe you should print this e-mail to keep as a reminder, pin it up in the kitchen or dining room as reminder or in your purse if you are always travelling.
DO NOT IGNORE THIS ... Especially those fond of Maggi...
'
CORRECT WAYOF COOKING NOODLES'
The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health:
Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat.
This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.
By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG, it will change the molecular structure of the MSG, causing it to be toxic.
The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have eaten the noodles.
CORRECT METHOD:
1. Boil the noodles in a pot of water.
2. Once the noodles are cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.
3. Boil another pot of water, add the cooked noodles into the hot boiling water and then turn off the stove.
4. Only at this stage when the stove is off, and while the water is very hot, add the flavouring powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
5. However, if you need dry noodles, remove the noodles and add the flavouring powder and toss it to get dry noodles.
Dietician's Note:
Better to buy the plain hakka noodles which you make, you initially need to boil in water and discard the water. This will soften the noodles but to prevent it from sticking we need to add a tbsp of oil and also the noodles are deep fried partially to make them crunchy and then dusted with flour to prevent them from sticking while boiling. Hence when you buy the instant noodles they are already made unhealthy and this is the type we use to make stir fry noodles and the regular Maggie too is made the same way, plus they add MSG / Ajinomoto and other chemical preservatives.
A large number of patients with ages ranging from 18-24 years are ending up with pancreatitis either as a swelling or infection of the pancreasdue to regular consumption of instant noodles... If the frequency is more than 3 times a week, then it is very hazardous...

this is not true.
when you see articles like this that appear to be scaremongering you can check them on a site called snopes.com, which researches various possible hoaxes on the internet, and finds out if they're true or not.
this is a hoax.
you can read the article disproving this story here
http://www.snopes.com/food/prepare/ramen.asp
this hoax has been around since about 2007, and that is pretty much word for word the example of the hoax as given on the site.
heating does not change the molecular structure of MSG, and noodles are not coated with wax. if they were, it would pass through the digestive system at the same rate as everything else.
any dietary troubles suffered by people who regularly eat the noodles are most likely due to a poor diet, lacking in fresh fruit and vegetables than down to the noodles themselves.
it's a great shame so many people pass these things on without even questioning whether they might be a hoax, as most are.
for future reference, red lipstick is not hazardous to your health, re-using plastic bottles is fine and drinking cold drinks with a meal does not force fat to solidify in your stomach.

Hi Galena,
I liked your stand on eating Maggie. I too think that the Dailies highlighting or people passing such remarks that regular eating of Maggie of noodle of such nature is harmful. One needs to look at the packaged date for in many occasions we buy too old a packet that has already caught fungus and all.
I almost everyday take Maggie after coming from my college if the lunchtime gets over. To take off the bad name of such things there should be letter written to the editor by noe and all.

Thanks once again Galena, seems like there are too many misconceptions about so many things that we are scared of now! Anyway, I will stick to not buying Maggi frequently because MSG or not, it still would better for him to eat fresh home-prepared meals and not packaged food. I will stick to eating Maggi when he is in school.....

Please read Galena's post above.
MANY of these things are just MISinformation which is broadcast around the Internet by people who don't bother to check whether the information they have is correct.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a substance which has been used for hundreds (if not thousands) of years but NEVER in the way that it is included in foods today. It is probably not an essential substance and is very likely harmful. If it is listed amongst the ingredients (as it has to be in many countries), then it is probably healthier to avoid that food altogether.

the funny thing is, these things keep coming up, I keep pointing out that they are known not to be true, and my post is always followed by lots of other posts thanking the original poster for alerting them to this non existant hazard, and saying they will warn their friends.
a lot of people prefer to live in ignorance.

Hi sona, thanks for posting the detailed and proper way to cook Maggi. I did read about this somewhere but then you know, the taste of Maggi is so addictive and it really makes me impatient each time I cook Maggi that I have to have it ready in minutes. There was one time when I was completely nauseated with it, reason being I was in England for two months and had carried lots and lots of Maggi, which mainly what I ate there for dinner. so had stopped buying it for a few months, now am back on it although not much. Since my son is 3 and likes Maggi, now I buy it only Once a month. But after reading your post, I have now resolved to cook it in the proper manner, that is throw away the first water. Thanks aqain for this! :)

kalyani1234, thanks for the participation. Though I have read the article about one year ago but I myself failed to use maggi properly. I made it as per proper way but my daughter refused to take it after the change in taste. As a result we stop to purchase maggi.

I expect it's probably nicer cooked with the flavouring in, rather than adding it after.
that way, the powder will be properly dissolved, and the noodles will take up more of the flavour as they soak up the water.
so as it makes no difference health wise, if you prefer adding the flavour first, do it.

It may be, (in fact it is illuminating, especially Galena's post above) but you have added precisely NOTHING to it by posting this.
Do you ever wonder why your MyLot Reputation is only a '4 star'? Perhaps you don't care that other people typically give you negative ratings for posts like this.

I'm a fan of instant noodles and canton and I was so worried upon reading your post. I've been cooking the noodles the wrong way and you made me realize how stupid it was. Unfortunately, I followed the instructions at the back of the lucky me noodles I always eat. From now on, these will be the steps that I will follow every time I cook my instant noodles and will avoid eating instant noodles as much as possible.

it makes no difference. if you prefer it cooked with the seasoning in, that doesn't cause a health hazard. this is a hoax that has been perpetrated by well meaning individuals that didn't know it was a hoax.
in fact, if you cook with the seasoning in, it will taste better, as the noodles will absorb flavour.

I have stopped eating instant noodles ever since my mother got diagnosed with cancer. We had to change my diet and I did eat a lot of canned and instant noodles way back because of my work and most days I had no time to cook a good meal. But I do know that you do have to throw away the water where the noodles were boiled in, then add new water, boil then turn off the heat. As with the instructions, the powdered flavoring has to be added when you turn off the heat.

Really?
The instructions on one of the most popular instant noodles maker in our country(PH)says:
1:) Boil noodles
2:) Turn off heat
3:) Add the seasonings
4:) Stir noodles and enjoy
I never heard of throwing the first set of boiled water, seems a waste of water and
LPG to me.

sona for me these would probably kill me as just a small amount f MSG in food makes my throat swell and if I do not get an antihistamine at once, I could die.I hope MSG is listed in the ingredient of the noodles. I love the taste of them but cannot eat them because of the severe allergic reaction to them.

hello sona,
Thanks for this piece of information. I was very fond of eating instant noodles but was fed up and eventually don't eat much of it now. It's just confusing when we find this kind of story as a hoaxed.
However, if I am still eating more of this, I would probably still cook in the wrong method because the taste would be different and the preparation time is longer if we do the correct way I am glad I wasn't so addicted eating these noodles anymore.
