Do You Remember When Stores Were Closed On Weekends?

I remember when everyone use to do most of their weekly grocery shopping on Friday's after they got paid. Many would go out for a fish lunch and then do there grocery shopping, as the stores were not open on the weekends. I remember that families did more together back then. Saturdays were usually cleaning day, time to wash and wax the car, get yard work or any other work that needed to be done. Saturday evenings sometimes family and friends came over for a short visit, or we all just watched Saturday night at the movies. Sundays were for church, sometimes we were taken out for lunch after church. Saturday afternoon we went roller skating or to a movie. Other Sundays were for visiting relatives. What did you all do back when the stores were closed on weekends.

I do not remember stores being closed on Saturdays but I remember when everything was closed on Sunday. I grew up in Boston and we had very strict blue laws when i was growing up. I guess it goes back to the days of the Puritans but no retail businesses could be open on a Sunday. My parents had a small mom and pop business. They worked day break to night 6 days a week. They would have been open on Sundays if they could have been. So Sunday, we ate at home as a family or went out to eat. It was the one and only meal that we got to eat together. Sometimes we went to a family event or on an outing. Many Sunday evenings, my parents liked to have friends or relatives over to play cards. They had to close the windows, lower the blinds and shut the drapes. It was illegal to play cards on Sunday. If caught, they would have been fined.

Hi Boston, it is great to hear that others went through similiar times. It has been so long, possibly it was just Sundays. Infact correction, you are right, and I was wrong. As kids we use to walk downtown on Saturdays and the stores were open. Opps. Well Sunday everything was closed. I never heard of Blue Sundays. I do remember from church that they always said Sundays were a day of rest. It was nice spending time with the family on that day. Have a nice evening.

Hiya ML, Most things were closed in England on a Sunday so Sunday was the main Day for other things you could not get done in the Week. I donĀ“t know really as I had to do so many things every Day of the Week. I think only the Newsagents were open on a Sunday to deliver the Papers and they closed about Dinner Time. I was always so busy did not have much time to notice anything else really.xxx

When I originally wrote this I had said that stores were closed all weekend. But, after a few reminders, I remembered that it was only on Sunday's that the stores were closed. I wonder if it all got started that way because Sunday is suppose to be a day of rest. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Hiya ML, Well all I know is that the Newspaper Shop on a Sunday Morning was a God send as I used to work very long hours and of course I did much work around the House when I got home so Sunday was really my only Day to really be able to slow down and if I forgot anything they always sold a lot of things besides Newspapers in fact they are still there in the same place open very early and working away thank goodness they are there as most of the other Shops have long since vanished.xxx Very Happy Prosperous New Year to you and yours as well. Was thinking of you all over there too as I was up quite late last night.xxx

Awe, the good ole days. Way back before Computers, and all the hustle and bustle where kids got to be kids. We never had to worry about anything, and everyone knew everyone and was friendly. I remember back when you could never find anything open especially on Sundays, so you made sure to do your Grocery shopping etc. for Sunday dinner earlier in the week. Matter of fact a lot of gas stations were closed then too. I remember Church service on Sundays and then a nice Hot meal at home or a friends and the occassional going out to eat. Those were the days.

Yes those were the good old days. I wonder if any small towns in the US still close their stores and gas stations on Sundays. It would be so nice to live that way again. Families spent more times together. There were better shows on TV, there were not so many violence and murder shows on. Nice family shows. Sundays were a day for church and for visiting family and friends and sharing a wonderful meal and time together.

Oh I remember those days, I was very young but gee I am not sure I would cope these days, I prefer to go even late at night when there is hardly anyone else there, oh I hope they never go back to those days.

Believe it or not those days it seemed we had more time to enjoy life. Instead of shopping we went bowling, went for a ride, visiting, etc. It was just nice. But, I totally understand where you are coming from. I like to go shopping later in the evening as well. Have a nice day.

I can't really say that I'm part of the people who remembers stores being closed on weekends. I remember them pretty much always being opened on weekends. Maybe I'm too young to remember them being closed on weekends.

Maybe public awareness would bring those days back if the desire was there and people could see advantage. Sort of a volunteer movement might change commerce to close. What does it matter anyway, people only have so much money anyway and it go back to what it was before. When people shopped they actually had the money to do so?

That is so very true people only have so much money to spend. I remember when we were able to shop, with this economy we just can't no matter how hard we try. Thank you for commenting.

I remember stores being closed on Sundays, but not Saturdays. Unless there was something going on, Sunday's tended to be really low key, and the time would drag along. Finish homework and maybe go visit one of the grandparents. We did not go a lot of places.

Hi djbtol, that was an error on my part. It was only Sundays that the stores were closed. We went to visit relatives alot of the times, others we went to the movies/theater or rollaire skating.

I don't really remember many stores being closed on Saturday, but I sure remember when they were closed on Sunday. I would like to see more stores do these same things again as it would give families more time together and it would help the economy as people would invest in ways to entertain themselves on Sundays. I remember how we used to always either visit relatives on Sunday or they came to visit us. Those were the good days!

Hi Carol, Those were definitely the good ol' days. I remember them well. We tried doing that with our kids when they were younger. But, then the grandparents started going places on the weekends, so that all ended. Now people just don't have the time to visit anymore. Or don't make the time. I was wrong about the Saturdays, they weren't closed. I guess the whole weekend just seemed like it was all spent pretty much as family time. Have a nice evening.

I definately remember that.....well when they were closed on Sundays. We would go to town on Sat. and get what we needed.......which wasn't much as we lived on a farm and grew most of our own food. Sundays we would go to church then go visiting grandparents or other family. If we stayed home it's because we were the ones getting company.

Our Sundays were very similar to yours. I had to be reminded about Saturday shopping. Opps, I made a mistake, it was Sundays when everything was closed. Those times were so nice and memorable. Hugs

We have blue Sunday law, similar or maybe even copied from the U.S., as kids we did our school homeworks when we get home on Friday, so we could enjoy watching cartoons on black and white television the whole Saturday morning. I also remember this was the time when my mom and aunts would do their special home cooked dishes. Sunday was reserved for church, going to the park, the beach or the movies as a family and ends with Dad watching he's favorite movies on T.V. and promising us kids a gallon or 2 of ice cream if we promise to sleep early cause there would be school the following day. Stores no longer close at weekends cause business people learned that these are the most profitable days and life is getting harder, business is still close during Christmas, New year, holy Thursday and Good Friday and I think all souls and all saints day in our country.

Our businesses are also closed on those holidays. For Good Friday the are closed from noon till 3 pm. Then they are back open after that. You are right the business people learned that those where profitable days. I was mistaken it was only Sunday that the stores were close. I have a lot of good memories from those times. Have a nice day.
