When did you start cooking?

I just heard chefs say that kids should help out in the kitchen. They can do little things at first. And Rachel Ray said she thinks it does away with the " picky eater syndrome"I don't cook, Why? My mom Knew better not to even try to teach me. Somehow she knew it would backfire. I wouldn't eat Anything! She would have to fight me to get me to do anything. These days I am still a picky eater. But I can't say I don't know How to cook I choose Not to. I love watching the cooking shows and I have learned a lot but will I ever try to cook? no Not even at this age! So I want to ask you , when did you start cooking? do you enjoy it? And if you could do it all over again, would you star at the same age?

my grandmother wouldn't let me cook so I learned how to cook when I got married. I just took recipes and followed them. If I had had a choice in the matter I would have loved to cook much earlier.

I was never helping out in the kitchen. I am also a very picky eater. I also do not cook. But if I had to I could slap something together in a hurry. T also is not a cook, although she knows how from watching her mother through the years and her sister. She cooks for me and she is a good cook. But when we can both do without cooking, we take advantage of it.

T's sister is like my mother, she does not top cooking. I guess she enjoys it and there's nothing wrong with that. But, T cooks, she does not mind it. She would rather cook easy things, and since I can only have certain foods, it is pretty easy for her.

I guess it was mid or late teens for me. I would have liked to have started earlier now that I look back on it. It was a trial and error thing for sure..lol...I didn't have the female influence in my life and my grandfather was a beans and cornbread kind of guy..lol. I do ok and it's not so hard to follow recipes. After a while they are pretty well memorized. I don't do a lot of cooking now and my b/f was born to cook I think. I tell him all the time he should open a restaurant.

So the best way to your heart was through Your stomach? The tables have turned. I always say there are two type of men that I would be the worse girlfriend for, a basketball player and a chef. I hate , hate basketball and I like my steaks well done , I will not eat Any salad or any other " fancy" dish, lol! I'm glad you found him!

Yes, he knows how to cook meals and cooks deliciously.
At an early age, him being the eldest, knows what responsibility is. His father had a stroke when they were young , so they have no choice but to tend to themselves, when their mother would be in a far city seeking medical attention for their father. They were all taught early in life how to cook, wash their clothes , clean the house and to take care of his younger siblings .
Me, having grown in a more comfortable setting, don't know how to cook at that marriageable age.

I don't know how old I was when I started cooking. It was probably around 6 or 7 little things like pbjs and stuff till old enough to reach all the buttons in the kitchen. I was never forced or anything I wanted to cook but I do live to bake more then cook. With my ow. Boy or girl I'll teach them to make little things so if they are hungry and I'm not around to feed them. It also is good to teach them so basics of food so that when they are out on there own they can deed themselves. It can be every expensive eating out so it's a good way to show tune how to save money with cooking or making food you like.

I started cooking when I went to study away from my family. Until I became 18 I had never cooked, I only remember watching my mum cooking and preparing the dinner. It was very difficult in the beginning because I didn't even know how to cut the potatoes, they had weird shapes and it was obvious that I had never cooked before. I burned my food a lot of times but since I had to cook my own dinner, I started learning new recipes. You must have heard that 90% of students live with pasta, because it's the easiest and quickest meal.
Now I really anjoy cooking and learning new recipes and I am a fan of international kitchen. I'm happy that I was forced by life to learn how to cook because now it's a relaxing procedure for me.
I used to be very picky as well but when I stopped having a choice, I started eating a variety of food. It also depends on the way you cook everything, if you know what you like, you can make it in your own way.

that's the whole point. Once I burn a dish I would never try to cook it again. Food is too expensive. Since I am picky I Only buy foods I know I will like And I always get something Just in case I don't . I'm lucky, with heat and serve and frozen food I can almost dupicate what my mom used to make me.

It's nice that you can find frozen food that you like, sometimes I think they have many preservatives to keep them fresh that's why I avoid them. I couldn't afford to cook again either, so I just learned to eat anything I cook, I couldn't blame anyone if I had burned it or if I forgot to put salt.. :P
At the end of they day when you start cooking good, you can make bigger portions and eat 2-3 times. This can be less expensive than buying 2 meals every day from the super market. However everyone buys ready meals like pizza several times a week since it's an easy and fast solution if you don't have much time.

I don't have the patience to learn how to cook I suppose. Because once I burn Anything , I don't ever try it again. And I Have to eat so I would use More money to get what I should have in the first place, a ready made pizza! Being a perfectionist and a pessimist is not a good thing when it comes to cooking food. It makes more sense to just get what I Know I will like than try something I might not like. as for the preservatives, I really don't care. In my mind I was suppose to die by my own hand way back when I was 18. Any time on this earth after my 18th I am going to eat what I like. If I get ill , that's fine!

I started at a very early age. My mother worked and we lived on the farm and had hired hands that needed to be fed. I was in 6th grade the first time I made gravy by myself and all the guys that were working couldn't believe that I could do it all by myself. I do like to cook when I have someone to cook for......but for myself I don't like messing up the kitchen.

I don't see the point of cooking when I can go to my supermarket and get what I Love Already made. The closest I get to cooking is heating up a rice package!

I learned to cook when I was a kid. I don't really rememeber when I started. I eat alot of stuff I got so sick of I won't eat anymore, like potatoes! Same with tuna! My mom made into a casserole! Yuck! I hated to cook later on when my mom was around! She drove me nuts! She wouldn't let me do certain things my way! Same with baking! I used to love to cook and even bake! I rarely do now except when I have to do at work. One reason is I would make alot bakery for people at one job. They loved it! It was great! Started doing it for people at my current job all I got was people complaining they hated chocolate, hated sweets all together and I was making everyone fat! So that was the end of that! If I had to learn this again, cooking, I would not from my mom! My sister would be better person to learn from!

You co workers are so sad. Sweets making people fat. so I assume they are the ones who jump from one diet to the next , and think a size 6 id too fat!And are the type who feel guilty when they eat anything that tastes good! Forget them. They are not worthy of a home-baked sweets! I wouldn't cook either if I Had to do it a way that wasn't comfortable. My mom was wise enough to know I did not want to know how to cook.

Well,I can say he is a good cook and I learned a lot from him...

I try.
I was never one into cooking. But when I found myself with kids, and realized it was too expensive to be eating out all the time, and too unhealthy to be frying and grilling all the time, I had to learn.
I still avoid it, but when push comes to shove, I pick up a laddle!

I was about 7-8 when I started making eggs and bacon, pancakes, easy stuff. I loved it, nobody taught me anything, I ust wanted to do it. At first I did it without my parents' knowledge when I was home alone. Then slowly they just let me do it and saw I was good at it. I learned from tv shows and from what I saw and read but I also liked and still like to experiment alot with ingredients. Of course I failed some foods by doing so but it's what I like to do. Maybe it just depends on each and every one and it doesn't have anything to do with parents teaching. I am now an architect student so maybe it comes from my artistic side. I mix ingredients like I mix shapes and colors. I even have a draw to arrange food nicely each time I serve food in my house and even when I eat alone. I think it's ok to not like to do it, even if you can do it and you're good at it you can just simply hate it :)

Thanks. They all say the best way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So I would say , I will never has his heart so I will just have the rest of him! If cooking was the way to anything I would never get it. So I never looked. Thankfully my guy can care less that I can't cook! I have seen Way too many cooking shows and have said the next move for recipes too many times to claim I can't cook! the thing is , what I like to eat , I Never want to cook.

I started cooking just about a year ago back and I'm still not that experienced of a cook. I am however really good at making grilled cheese sandwiches and if it has a recipe box, then I can surely master the dish according to the instructions.
I do watch Food Network often to locate certain recipes that may be good to my family, but I usually require some assistance as I am no master chef yet. I want to be really good at culinary skills in a couple of years, so until then I will be learning new and adept ways to make meals for my loved ones!

I started cooking at a young age, must have been around 7 or 8. I got a cooking book for children as a gift and I must have loved the idea of being able to make your own food from scratch because I continued to cook from that moment on. It was only a hobby though I used to make dinner for my parents (with a bit of their help) some evenings. Once I ended up making soup that was much better than my mothers! Not everything I made worked out ok though, same as nowadays. I was however a very picky eater with the food my parents cooked though as an adult I've grown out of that. I can eat almost anything these days, even some things I hated as a child (such as brussel sprouts and cauliflower). I would definitely start at the same age if I had to do it all over again.

I started cooking when i was five years old.I will always remember that day. My mom is a fruit and vegetable vendor in the public market. After our class my brothers and i will go straight to the market to have lunch with our mom.We got to my mom early so my brother was ask to cook our meal, since my brother is but a lazy kid,he gave me all the ingredients and tell me what to do one by one.
We had pork stew. They all love what i cooked.Starting then the duty that my brother has to do was thrown on me.
If i were to do it again i still wont complain.I learned from it and its a knowledge i have with me till now.

I started cooking when I was at grade school, around 10 years old. My mom teaches me her signature recipes and when I was a teenager, I love experimenting flavors. I also love baking, which I started when I was 18. I don't regret learning how to cook and bake at these ages because it's one of my passion.
Have a great day!

I started cooking when my childhood starts which means when i entered into my teen age. I love cooking much and more. I started to cook food by seeing my mother. She was the master of the cooking. I studied all the methods from her. She told me or she helped me to learn it at her best.
