I Find It So Difficult To Meditate

I am a very stressed out person who suffers from severe insomnia. I have taken meditation instruction trying to relax some and hopefully improve my sleep. I went to a Buddhist Center near home where I learned their technique of meditation. They meditate with eyes downward to the floor with eyes slightly open. This does not work well for me. I suffer from extreme fatigue from my insomnia and meditating with my eyes slightly open causes mores stress and even more fatigue. I become painfully aware of how exhausted and fatigued I am. I am trying to find a group that meditates with eyes completely shut which I find more relaxing. But most groups seem to meditate with eyes slightly open. How do you meditate? Do you know of any groups that meditate with eyes closed?

I have been practising "mindfulness meditation" for over ten years now. It is very helpful and effective for relaxation, physical and mental, and for getting relieved of the stresses. Yes, this is meditation with eyes shut, and focusing your mind on physical and mental sensations as they appear. Have you heard about about the meditation teacher "Sayagyi Goenka". You can take a look at his website : dhamma.org He has meditation centers all over the world. There may be one where you are too. You can join there and follow the teachings. May you have peace of mind !

Thanks for the info. I will check out the teacher and the website. Is this group Buddhist, Hindu or some other group. They must have a religious affiliation.

I have done a search and I could not find the website dhamma.org but I found info on Sayagi Goenka. I also found something on Vispanni Meditation or something close. I believe that I have misspelled it. Is this the correct meditation? You learn it in a 10 day course?

Vipissani. I think that is it. At least I am closer to the correct spelling. I looked at the link that you sent me. Unfortunately, there are no centers near me and even if there were, i would not be able to give 10 days to the program. Bit, I like it. I am going to look into it more.

I have a friend who suffers from severe insomnia as well.. I find him restless, always stressed. I am really concerned with my friend, so I invite him to places full of trees, grassy and only hear is birds chirping. Until such time he felt asleep. The best place to meditate is a place where you can not hear unwanted noises. Noises can distract your meditation to relax.

Agreed. Do you meditate? If so, do you meditate with your eyes closed or slightly open? Massage helps with insomnia. If you want to help your friend and can do massage, here is your chance.

Yes, I meditate when i am in a stress mode. Sometimes i listen to instrumental that is soft music in my room. I like listening to music like majorca by enigma and always taking deep breathes several times while listening to that music, I added floral scent oils to burn so that when I smell it, it calms my mind. My insomniac friend accidentally smells the fume of my lavender scent, when he is about to enter my room, later on he slept, drooling my own pillow.

it is not good to meditate at all the way i think you are going it. it is very stressing and need to do a lot of mind control. you can meditate without stressing yourself. when i do meditate , i don't need to keep repeating the words or keep thinking the words. i do once or twice then relax and just try to breathe some air and think of the reality of that words i meditate in my case , a bible verse. like i meditate "the Lord says: i am with you, i will never leave you nor forsake you:" after thinking that i will say to myself , just accept that fact whether you feel it or not, then just leave up to GOd that i did my part in believing his words. and just think it again after 5 minutes. but in between meditation i think of the good things in my life or things i should do to make life more positive. although i still suffer from problem but at least during those times of meditation i get some relief. we dont' meditate to make like our thoughst like robots or computers. that is not the right way to meditate. meditate to fill your thoughts with truth that would bring you lightness in your heart and in your mind as well.

I agree that meditation should not be stressful. It should be used to relieve stress. It should help relax. I thank you for your insightful response. I often take an evening walk alone and even though I am thinking, my thoughts are relaxing. My mind does get stilled and I do relax. Isn't that one of the purposes of meditation -- to still the mind?

i tried meditating long time ago. I was alone. I just followed the instruction that I read from a yoga article. Well I can't remember what happened at that time. But I found it hard to do it.

It does help to take meditation instruction or a meditation class. Meditation is easy to learn but difficult to practice. Instruction was free at a Buddhist Center near my house. The class was small. The instructors and students were very nice. You can search meditation classes or instruction to see what is offered in your community.

I developed insomnia in 1975 and have not had one normal sleep since. I suffer terribly with it. My insomnia has been diagnosed as a neurological problem and it is not curable. I am trying to learn to cope better with it and manage it. I will look into Sri Sri RAVISANKAR and his camps. I am glad to know that some groups meditate with their eyes closed.

The thing about meditation is that you really can use whatever style feels most comfortable to you. It doesn't have to follow any really strict guidelines, and you don't even need to do it in a group unless you want someone to help guide you into it. I close my eyes when I meditate because it helps me focus more and blocks out any visual distractions, but I absolutely have to be sitting straight up or I'll probably end up falling asleep after a while (it's really, really easy to fall asleep once I really get into the groove). I sit however feels most comfortable, usually with my legs uncrossed so they don't fall asleep. Most people can't comfortably meditate with their eyes even slightly open until they become more used to doing it with their eyes closed. Some people can even do it in a crowded area, oddly enough.

I agree with what you have said. I feel that meditation can be adapted to one's own needs or desire. I take an evening walk alone. And I meditate while taking my walk . I do not stop thinking but my mind becomes peaceful and stilled. I believe that I can meditate with my eyes closed as well as lying in bed trying to sleep. I have also been able to meditate at the bus stop and the in the sauna at The Y. Most persons I know who meditate do so both alone and in a group. I like the way you say that meditation does not have to follow any strict guidelines and you can use whatever style feels most comfortable to you.

I am hoping to get some answers from persons who meditate and maybe have for a long time. Many mylotters are live in India and that part of the world. I hope that some will answer. Yup, my mind is hyper-active. I need to relax my brain. That is among the reasons for my insomnia.

I think you could start a new group that meditates with eyes shut. You can even be the President. I am not an expert on meditation, but I don't think meditation is about the eyes. Focus on your inner self. Your situation is difficult because of the insomnia, which only causes you more stress. If you are awake during the middle of the night, good chance your surroundings are quiet. Now you just need to get the storm within settled.

Hi... Meditation requires a lot of concentration... That is the thing, that has kept me away from it. I can't concentrate on myself or my breathing... That is how the instructions are, you need to concentrate on your breathing to meditate... And that is so awful tough.. Eyes must be closed!!! Also, it is not just for sleep... Meditation is good for a lot of things...

Yup, breathe in and breathe out. That I can do. Trying to stop thinking is So hard, as you probably know. I was taught that eyes must be slightly open. I want to close them. And there is my problem. I was told that eyes can not be closed during meditation, that they have be slightly open. I am very aware that meditation os good for a lot of things but I am mainly wanting to use it to relax and as a sleep aid.

I'm so sorry to hear about your insomnia. I have never tried to meditate. I know I wouldn't be at peace but in Plot mode. Can't you just do the same things they do with eyes open with your eyes closed?

I asked and I was told no. I asked my meditation instructor if I could adapt meditation to my own needs. I was told no, that one must meditate with eyes slightly open. I can't and when I do meditate, I close my eyes. I believe that there must be meditators out there who meditate with eyes closed.

It does not work that well to go on line for a meditation group. One needs a physical group but one can also meditate alone. And all persons who meditate do meditate alone at times. There are some solo practitioners who never meditate in a group but most meditators also have a group.

Some persons make it look so easy. Maybe it is easy for them. But as a new student to meditation, I find it so difficult. I think all new students feel this way. That is what I have heard in this Buddhist Community even from the experienced meditators: that it was very difficult in the beginning.
