My dog Zeus used to be very good when we clipped his nails, used to take under five minutes. This summer something suddenly changed, and now when I try ,he goes in a total panic , can not control and we can not clip his nails. He lets me play with his paws, his nails, even when I am holding the clippers in my hand, but when I try to clip,he freaks!Any suggestions?

My dog absolutely hates getting her nails trimmed too. She growls and gets very vicious looking. She's a medium sized dog and it was hard for people to hold her down because she'd put up such a fight.
Then, my mom took a handful of treats, closed her hand and made a fist, and let my dog try to get to the treats while my dad clips her nails. This seems to work out pretty well because trying to get the food in my moms hand distracts her.
If something like that doesn't work for your dog, then vets and groomers know how to trim nails on all dogs.

Yes, I definitely understand. My dog hated getting her nails done to the point where she would get sort of vicious with us and try and come after us. She's about 50 pounds and it was hard for just my mom and dad to do it. But as soon as she went to the vet they were able to trim her nails with no problem. They didn't use treats or anything. But then my mom started using them at home and now my dog tolerates getting her nails trimmed but she doesn't like it lol

That is the same with my dogs, except I couldn't continue trying to keep their nails trimmed and do my school work at the same time. I am fortunate, my daughter is a groomer, so I just pay her to come over and trim their nails. So your only choice is to take your dog to a groomer, or be forceful and tell him no if he starts fighting you. BTW, it's the dog, because my girls still yelp and whine and try to fight my daughter, it's called "being a baby" lol

Ok, first of all, where did you get the dog? In other words do you know his background, was he ever abused? If not, then you do need to remain calm, but be firm. What happens when you pin him down? Not to clip his nails, but to show him that you are in charge? Does he panic then?

Thanks for the advice, but when he goes into a panic mode,he is blind and deaf to anything ,only wants to get away...I see the white of his eyes.I watch the dog whisperer, and till now I did not see any episode that would help.If I could snap him out of panic mode I could control him.Usually he is very good!

It is easy to get a little to deep and cause pain, even if it doesn't hurt right when you do it. I often wish dogs could talk. Most Vet or groomer will clip nails for very little money. We have the same paroblem with Sadie, but she was a rescue and has never let us just clip her nails.

This is not the case ,since his nails were clipped more than a month before, without any problems. I hesitate to take him to a groomer or a vet, since he is a very strong Rottweiler and 3 people could not hold him when we tried the last time.(one of us was a veterinarian tech!!)

It's very difficult to tell you from description without to see the dog. Are you sure he do not feel pain from wound? Are his nail "the quic" is all? I'm sorry I'm not good with english vet term. Can you make consultation wit vet technician (vet nurse not vet doctor).
Also try to reassure your dog with his favorite toy ore biscuit.
