I am retired now but in my last job we did have mandatory overtime when the work load was heavy. I never liked it and usually enough people would just want to work that we didn't have to do the mandatory time but occasionally we did. Not fun! I always tried for the schedule to have the weekends off and when I had to work I wasn't real happen. Worked way too many weekends in my day.

I only work part time and I'm "forbidden" to work over time. saying that, if I end up running over one day I take it off another day... since I don't exactly have a supervisor watching my coming and going and my client is fine with that...
however, shopping... that's a whole other matter - no money

I don't always enjoy overtime, but I am required to work it. It has eased up this year. Our overtime isn't going to start until next month. Last year we had to work 7 days a week from October until the middle of June. It was very grueling. Everyone was grumpy and needed some time off.
Hang in there...maybe you will get to go shopping soon and have a little extra money too.

There are times when I need to do overtime work. My boss doesn't order me actually. It's really just necessary in the work I do. We're dependent on the deadlines of our clients and so at times, we have no choice but to do OT work just to meet the deadline. Do I enjoy it? Not really, although the OT pay is above what is required by law. But I'd rather spend the time with my son instead :)

Hi Rocketsky. It is not new to me. In fact, i do overtime work without pay even without my boss asking me to do so because there are so much to do. Furthermore, my boss is just as busy and just as wind up with work. She does overtime work often like i do. It would be such a bummer if i do overtime work often and i see my boss leaving office strictly at 5pm. It is like... "hey what do you take me for? Your patsy???!!! ahahahah!

It really depends on what kind of job we get. We all work at a time when the economy is so demanding and everyone has to slog out. But, if my overtime effort makes a difference for someone and helps someone, I would be glad to do it.

I think it would really be a disappointment , when suddenly you were ordered to work overtime by your boss. But , as a good employee, i think i can just follow the order of my boss. As long as i am compensated for it, and be given a nice dinner, i can very well do it.
