A recent study released in the US has revealed that 1 in 12 teens cut or otherwise hurt themselves. To me this is a staggering number. It is tragic to learn that so many youths are suffering in this way. As a society, we have a responsibility to our youth and we are failing. What are your thoughts on this topic?

It is very tragic. My great daughter was one of them. I did it when I was young too but because I thought it was cool not because I was troubled in any way. I think that kids that used to come from multi-generational households were alot better off. They were taught values, character, and were made accountable. Now their parents aren't even accountable.

Self harm is rather something that I never really got why people do it. However the more you think about it, it could be a result of a bigger problem. The fact that pre-teens and teens feel the need to get a rush of some sort, to deal with a broken family atmosphere. Where they need to really feel the need to fill some sort of hole, to ease their agony.
Granted it's not a healthy way to do so but many of the vices that teenagers really do participate in do cope are not healthy. This one might be one of the more disturbing, one of the more twisted forms of coping. I don't think I would ever do it, but there are many who and that's a problem. But its a deeper root of an even bigger problem, that problem being society in general.

Well, it is really a staggering number, but why do they have to do it. All I can say is, these people need more parental guidance and perhaps are deprived of it.
