i have seen many people who are coming 3rd and 2nd in their respective competition are depressed whether it is dance, singing, acting, sports, racing and many other types of fields.they are not happy to be in the second or third position and sometimed they fell in a huge depression for days and even for months about why they didn't come first do you think winning is more important then trying hard and putting our best efforts in it.i think we should be happy about our efforts rather thinking about this rat race i think the problem with this kind of rat race is that even if you win you are still a rat!!

No I don't think winning is coming 1st. Winning is something we achieve while competing with ourselves. It doesn't matter whether you are first or not all that matters is Have you tried your best efforts? Have you enjoyed it? Have you performed better than you had performed previously? Coming 1st is just shows the world yes, you are better at it but that doesn't mean the others are not good.

mayur2j...I agree except sometimes being the winner doesn't really mean one is the best. Sometimes it just means the strongest person made some mistakes.

No it doesn't. It means you have to have the effort to WAIT for the RIGHT TIME in order to win. Life is not a race. It doesn't matter that you got the finish line but how you were able to go to the finish line. ^_^

@bewitchingmelody: I would agree with you on this matter. It is the effort that is matter most. Winning or losing is the second thing. It is better losing proudly rather than losing by not competing at all.

Hi Horda! In my humble opinion, winning means always coming first but but but... it is not all the time that someone wins. When one wins, he is also bound to lose.. Should he loose, he should be able to get up and back in the race to challenge himself. The sad thing about races and competitions is that... we compare ourselves with others. In my humble opinion, that should not be case. When we are competing, we should compete against ourselves, we should compete against our laziness, our hopelessness. If we try comparing ourselves with others, we are bound to loose our own self and take for granted the gifts that are innate in us. This is a nice topic you started here.

For me winning means doing better than i did previously. So it doesn't matter to me as to what others are upto. All that matters to me is that, i am getting better at what i do and hence i am winning in my own right. So i am not a rat :)

Hi, Winning and losing is all part of the game. Like the saying goes, " You never win unless you lose ". If we had worked hard and give in all that we have got to achieve something then it doesn't matter even if we are announced as the second or third place winner. The important thing is we have tried our best and to know that there is always a next time will get our hopes up.

hello there. winning is a very great feeling and it really adds up to your ego. why would we settle for less if we could do more?there are instances also that people are contented with being second because they have proven that they are still the best.a good example is Juan Manuel Marquez who just lost to Manny Pacquiao in their third boxing fight. i know marquez was not happy after the announcer proclaimed that he lost the fight but deep inside he knew that he won the fight.

for me winning is not being the first. if you were the first, then it is just a bragging right! :D haha when you have gone so far as to being at the top 5, etc then you are already a winner. Finishing something you started whether you won the race is not as bad as people think. winning is not about the recognition, or the trophy it is what you have gained in the process - like gaining better team work with your buddies, or you being more compassionate about what you do, or when you learn to accept that someone was better than you at the time.

Winning does not mean actually to win any game or anything. It is just that if you achieve what your goal was or not. Like in a race if you just made a goal to complete the race no matter on what position, you are actually a winner. It is also I feel that first, second and third positions like this make differences between two people.

HDHORDA4..No I don't think winning is just coming in first in a competition...there are so many ways to be a winner including just improving yourself in little ways..

No, for me it means achieving what you had in mind. If I wasn't very good with running and want to be in the top 3, than achieving even the 3rd place is winning for me.

Winning doesn't necessarily mean being first place in everything. Winning is losing first. Winning means doing and showing all your best efforts and become a good sport. It means being proud of what you have done. In life, it is impossible to get everything, but if you never give up and continue to work harder with full determination you mostly likely succeed. In the end you WIN!

I think winning is not having the medal or the trophy, it is the way of accepting the result. If you do this, you will miss the feeling of regrets and disappointments. Because life is all about winning and losing. Nothing is permanent in this world that's why. in everything that is happening we should accept and learn from it. After all. you are still the one who controls the race.

A lot of us would agree that winning doesn't necessarily mean coming in first. Like, even if you come in last, but you broke your personal record, that would be winning also. I guess winning is really how you see it. In any undertaking, not only in sports, knowing that you did everything you could even if you didn't place first is still winning. But it would be nicer if you placed first also :)

@hdhorda4: I believe that they have some grounds of not feeling happy despite giving their all-out in their respective competition. They have trained very well up to their limits and then losing to individuals/teams, which undoubtedly better than themselves. Although it is a good lose, a fair lose but if you have the winning attitude then I believe it is something that you cannot accept. Nevertheless, winning doesn't mean always coming first. What really counts is the effort you put in. Although they are upset, but I believe their effort is something worth what they got in their hands and they should be proud of that no matter what position or medal color they got.

Some people just cannot accept others are better than them. Accepting that you cannot always be the winner, helps one to move forward and reduces the chances of getting depressed. People need to understand that they are many people outside there who could be much better than you are.
