Eating Slowly

I was watching Lord Sugar being interviewed recently and he said he'd found an interesting way to keep his weight down. He'd been in a restaurant and had ordered a shrimp starter and it came with a tiny fork. He found he ate slowly because he couldn't load much food on the fork. When the waiter came to take away the empty dish he kept hold of the fork and used it to eat his main dish - which of course took much longer. What he found was that because he ate slowly he felt more satisfied and full.
Today I saw something about a talking plate that tells people if they are eating too quickly.
My mother always used to say "let that hit your stomach" when I asked for anything extra or for something after dinner.
Is a part of being overweight sometimes that we eat too quickly and we should take time with our food and allow our stomachs to react and let us feel full?
Would you use a tiny fork like Lord Sugar or a talking plate as part of a diet plan?

Hi Hvedra.....
My granny always said we are eating to fast, but its so hard to chew it 50 times before swollen it. I find it true when you chew longer you will eat less. First of all you when we chew amylase enzyme active to help the body outbreak the food. The more we chew the more enzyme released and body will feel they had enough.
But this day so many food don't need to chew that's much like Ice cream, bread, chips and they all enemy when you wanna loose weight.

Yes I do believe that eating slower does help you lose weight as you don't get to overeat. Here's some tips, chew well and slowly savouring the food and drink water it helps fill your stomach as well. Eating fast does tend to make you overeat because the body doesn't register it until later.

People don't realize that digestion actually begins in the mouth. You need to chew your food very well. People do eat too quickly and sometime are hungry right away because they have not given the food time and because of some food preservatives. I wrote an article called Eating Mindfully about this very subject.

Hi hvedra: I think you are actually right on this subject and that's a good strategy to control what you are eating. In my case, it's anxiety the reason why I eat more than what I really need to eat. I have tried it sometimes and it works so this is a good suggestion.

There are other reasons for being obese, but I think you are right on the money, for the most part. Sometimes we just choose to eat junk instead of healthy food, and those extra calories on top of the other foods we eat brings us way beyond our calorie threshold. However, eating too fast causes us to keep eating beyond what our body needs. It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to give the satiety signal; thus when one eats quickly over the span of 20 to 30 minutes, that person probably ate 2 to 3 times what the body needs.
