What was your favourite traditional fairy tale as a child?

I really loved Beauty and the Beast. I had an old Ladybird book that had some beautiful illustrations - proper paintings, not the cartoons and line drawings you get nowadays. I think what I really loved about it was that Beauty had two mean older sisters and going to live with the Beast rescued her from them. I saw a lot of my life in that! Which was your favourite tale and why? Has there been a grown up version of it or have you recognised its themes in modern books?

The first time it was written down was in France in the 18th Century. You can find an English Translation of that version here http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/beauty.html There are lots of variations on the same theme in many folk stories for some of those tales and the history of the story go here http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0425c.html

I didn't have all these newer fairy tales when I was growing up. I think Cinderella was a favorite. My grandmother, who raised me, usually read to me from her school primer. The store of the Little Match Girl and heroining story of a young girl who is watching some kids out in the old west when some indians come. Stories like that are what I remember.

If I recollect, most fairy tales were favorites coz I always thought of myself as the damsel in distress or the wronged heroine who would ultimately be rescued by the handsome prince LOL however, I think Snow White was a real favorite (she is still so, even now)… I loved the completely while look contrasted with the super red apple…and then the dwarfs…I love each and every one of them. Another favorite was Goldilocks … I still hope to get lost in the woods some day and chance upon a bear’s cottage with steaming bowls of porridge and a well-made bed

My favorite fairytale is also Beauty and the Beast and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it was the first fairytale I have read. My nanny when I was younger gave the book to me as a gift.
