Tell me something interesting about yourself

I went to a job interview just recently and I was asked this question. I stared at the interviewer, allowing my brain to absorb and process the question in my head. What's interesting about myself..?, i thought. There were times when I see myself as an interesting person, but at that moment, my mind was blank.
"Um.. I like writing, if that counts as interesting." I answered lamely. The interviewer nodded, and waited for a few seconds as if expecting me to add some more 'interesting' facts about myself, and since I did not add anything more, she then decided to move on to the next question.
What would answer her if you were asked this question?

I remember my first job interview and mind also went blank when I was asked a similar question. I was really caught off guard. Well, actually, I didn't have any idea then of what questions were asked during interviews. I assumed they were objective in nature, not subjective ones. I mean, something interesting is subjective. People have varied views on what interesting is. So the next time, you just think of things interesting about you. It doesn't matter if it's interesting to them or not. I believe the interviewer put more weight on how you answered the question rather than what the answer was.

Yep, I've realized it now. It's just that i couldn't think of anything interesting about me. I see myself as an average person.

Hi Aja!
Had I been the one who asked you that question, I would totally say that I will be very interested in your answer. Being a writer and a reader myself, I am always fascinated with other people who share the same interest. I think people who are creative are the most interesting people in this world. There are just so many things that goes into their mind :)
I am sure you can think of some other things that you can consider interesting about you and maybe you are just nervous during the interview? It gives us the tendency to space out ^_^

Pea brains? Haha, that made me laugh a little. I suddenly thought of Plants VS Zombies. I don't know why _

Hey there, girl_thinking! I think the same way about writers and artist. Their minds are more interesting, because they think a lot about many things and they know about a lot of things. You can learn many things from them. Too bad that others can't understand this (those pea-brains, LOL) they only think that those who sing and dance are interesting because they are entertaining and famous. I think artist deserve just as much attention, appreciation and praise. LOL. I don't wanna be biased here, but that's true.
Yep, girl! A little nervous, but more just blank... I couldn't think well as a result of fatigue, lack of rest. To everyone who is reading this, make sure you sleep well before a job interview!!!

Hmmm, that's a tough one when you're on the spot. I think you answered very well, personally! They're probably expecting a load of pre-prepared, crappy answers so something honest is brilliant.
I don't know what I'd say. Perhaps that I used to have really long hair and go everywhere barefoot. Or that I used to have half a dozen pet rats. Or that I can introduce myself in English, French and Japanese. I dunno.

Nah, I can only introduce myself in three languages. I don't know enough Japanese to do much more!

Haha, maybe.
Yeah, I could say i was being honest. Not everyone finds writing interesting, that is why I wasn't convinced about my answer. In my country, not everyone is into writing. Most people are into singing and dancing, the usual stuff. To me, writing is more unique.
Those are interesting indeed, spike! haha, you could have answered in all three languages you know, that would shock the interviewer!

yes ,in an interview ,we already are in a tense feel ,we do not be in a normal way,we do forget a lot of things and stumble upon the question and answers we give.Really we forget everything.
And this particular question is such a hard thing "tell some thing about urself" or else "tell something interesting about urself" actually who will like to say the personal things ,no one likes right.

and some interviewer asked to tell the resume in hindi,as the languages they preferred were english and hindi.I can speak hindi but resume,i never tried that. This person was the first person to ask me to tell a resume in hindi.
They also will be laughing and having fun when they listen to our answers as they are also once in our place.

Exactly! When you are on the spot, you get to answer in a way that even surprises you. I didn't actually love the job, but I unconsciously acted as if I do, to show them that i was very very interested of that job and wanted it badly. LOL. Sometimes, we even lie and only realize that after the interview. My friend also had the same feeling afterwards, we laughed.

I always freeze up on that question when I'm in an interview. In fact, any question pertaining to things that don't relate to my work abilities make me tense, haha. I don't know, I guess I just don't like talking about myself. Most of the time I throw out something along the lines of being extremely creative and having a love for art or something. I need to rehearse answers to interview questions more, maybe, so I don't stutter so horribly every time.

Now you have an idea
That's what i thought too, it was a personal question and irrelevant to my work that's probably why i couldn't think of what to answer, other than the fact that i also weren't getting enough sleep. Did not even practice for the interview. My friend and I were woken up by a message on our phones form that company, telling us to be there 2 hours later. We had to jump out of bed and rush!
Ack! I should have added that art interest. Totally forgot myself! Better show them that when I get accepted to work there. -grin-

I've actually done practice interviews back when I was in high school, but since it was with people I knew it was never a big thing with me freezing up. Except for that one time when it was a kid I didn't know and he stared at me like he was trying to burn holes in my head. Then I froze up. Ah, anxiety. I definitely should get back in the practice of ... practicing interviews.
Usually I play my creativeness as a quality that allows me to see things in new lights and come up with innovative things for the job, but that's usually only impressive if it's a job where they want innovators to work.

Oh I hate when they ask these kind of questions, you know it's hard when you are not prepared nor someone who thinks well on their feet. I dunno what's interesting about me, I think I'm rather boring actually.

well, we can't just tell them we are boring, that would be risky. If things go well, they might appreciate your honesty but most of the time, they would think you lack confidence and drop you out of their list for potential future employees of their company.
So, as much as possible, we have to answer.

Hi friend, Well this question can be answered in many ways, When it comes to job interview you have to think from the professional's prospective, these questions most often can also be asked by our friends, but answering them is not a big deal as you are not gonna get benefited. According to me, if i was in your place i would have answered that " Regarding myself, i like playing in a team coordinating my friends and arriving to a solution, The next i would answer is I don't depend others to take decision on me. I take decision myself. You see friends, these answers may be quite boring to read but iam sure they make a huge impact on the interviewers mind. Thanks for making a beautiful post, All the best for your carrer.

thank you prince! Argh, why didn't i think of those answers? maybe if there was more time given i could have answered better. hehe... all i could think of was my writing skills and that is quite something. I'll remember your advice the next time i get to go on another job interview.

I can think of a few things but they aren't true and I definitely wouldn't get the job!
Perhaps the point of the question is not whether or not the thing you say is interesting but how you engage in the conversation with the interviewer - to see if you can keep them focussed on you and make them feel happy to chat to you.

You are probably right, hvedra. My inability to answer the question could only prove how unprepared i was.

Question sound like I have heard it before. Well, I might say I can draw, likes pizza and prefer to stay awake late at night. I would not tell so many but just enough. It can get real bad if I'm not ready with an answer.

Hi there!
That would be a question I'd never anticipate :) But if I was asked that question? My mind also would go blank as I try to think of an answer....it would be hard to think of one that would also interest her. But people like it when I make them laugh - I could be a clown if I'm in the mood :D, so maybe that would be my answer.

My friend told me that i could have answered that 'I'm oddly funny' My friend thinks I'm funny, me, i think I'm just... quiet and people think that's boring and not interesting.
I think if you answered that, the interviewer would challenge you to make her laugh.

"Tell me something interesting about yourself". What he/she meant was tell me something about yourself that differentiates you from others. Many people have told me about such questions. Like this other day I was watching this movie, and the interviewer asks, how many buttons would it take to fill the room?
And the girl answers, with or without you??!!
They just need (Want) quick, witty replies.

Probably they want to know what kind of person you are to ask this question. A witty person, i suppose, would capture their interest as that would mean they would get to work with a fun person to be with when you are hired.

hey there! Don't worry about it. That happens a lot during interviews. Your answer to job interviews should be focused on your personality on how you do the job or all about your working attitude. That's what the interviewer wants to get from you. And also focus your answer for the benefit of the company you are applying for. When you get used to interview questions you will be able to answer them with confidence. Wish you luck!

Thanks, kazumi. I think it went okay, it's that question that bothered me most. I'm an odd person and i don't know if the interviewer would like that. SO i didn't let her know that, i just told her what i do that most people don't: that's writing (writing in forums i mean)
