Doing one's laundry is a sign that you're not successful

Is this really true? If you do your own laundry, does that mean you're not successful in life? I know the rich and famous ones hire people to do their own laundry or the ever-so-busy businessmen. But I would never think that if a person washes his own clothes then that person is unsuccessful in life.

That would depend on how you define success, I guess. In our very materialistic world, success is often equated with how much money you have. So if you could afford to have people do your beck and call such as wash your clothes, you are perceived as 'successful'. But, that is not what success is for me. So, no, for me, doing your laundry does not make you unsuccessful. But, that's just me.

I guess I was referring to success in a materialistic way in this situation. My friend felt that it was kind of not normal to see someone with enough money doing his own laundry. I guess she meant well. I just got curious about whether other people think the same way.

Hi beamer: I see. But even with that, if a person can't afford at this moment to pay someone to do the laundry, this doesn't make him unsuccessful. Maybe he has lots of projects and he/she is working on them. But if you have enough money I think it would be silly not to pay someone else to do the laundry. ALVARO

I really don't think that this is the case at all. I think that you can be successful at what you do, and still do your own laundry. I don't think that one necessary has anything do with the other.

That's why I was a bit amazed when my friend made that comment. I mean, I also do not think it doing one's own laundry projects an image that you're unsuccessful.

Sometimes people do their laundry because there is no helper around. They want to hire one but no one is available. You remind me that tomorrow I need to be doing my laundry---waaah! It is one task I do not relish, but what can I do? The house help went home and it is hard to find a replacement.

Why? Doing the laundry can have its relaxing moments. All you hear is the sound of the machine whirring and water splashing around. Kind of reminds of the beaches when I'm on vacation :) Anything can be thought of positively, right? :)

My mom does that, too. Maybe a lot of moms do those things :)

No, i don't think that is not true. There are just some meticulous persons who does their own laundry because they don't want their dresses to be damaged by careless laundrying of the laundry woman. But it isn't an indication that you are not successful.

I agree. Actually, that's one of the reasons why I still do some of my laundry. Usually I hand-wash those branded and expensive shirts that I have. I don't even use a washing machine 'cause it wears them off quicker than hand-washing it.

Me, i always remind our laundrywoman to hand wash all my blouses. She uses our washing machine when she does the laundry. So, i would sometimes warn her that if she machine washed them, and they get damaged i wlll let her pay for it. So, she carefully handwash all our delicate blouses and shirts.

Doing your own laundry is a shallow basis of your own success. Doing the chores in the house, for me, is just a relaxation especially washing dishes and laundrying. We have a helper who can do these things, but from time to time, I volunteered to do it for above mentioned reasons. It is also a basis of whether a person is rich or not. Anyone who can afford to pay a day's wage can ask somebody to do the laundry for her/him. Doing the laundry can even be a form of success . If you can finish it in a shorter time than the usual and still can do other things aside from it, it's kind of success. But when we speak of success I think it's more of doing something better and contented at the result. when you are happy and contented with what you have in life, i think that's already being successful.

It is shallow, I must admit. It actually made me chuckle when my friend told me. I like doing household chores, not all, though, but some of them like doing the laundry and the dishes, I find relaxing. And you're right, finishing a certain chore is being successful. It's the same as accomplishing a task at work :)

That's true. It does not matter how menial the work is as long as you can finish it with contentment and pride, you're okay. It does need a pat on a shoulder but you feel some fulfillment.

That is definitely not true. Doing laundry doesn't means that your are not successful, some people do it as a form of exercise or fun. I don't really get the connection between doing laundry and not been successful.

I don't think there's a connection also. And you're right, some people do find it fun to wash their own clothes. I for one find it relaxing.

That exactly what I mean. It just too bad people associate so many thing with things that are really senseless. I don't understand what goes on mind of such people.

I have never heard of anything like this, and I am sure there are a lot of people out there who would tend to disagree with this one as well. Personally there is nothing wrong with washing your own clothes, and Yea, it would be nice if you could hire someone sometimes to help around the house like this, but personally this is a small chore and easy to do. So not sure why you would say the people that have to do this is unsuccesful.

hi beamer no not at all.it simpley means that you are frugal and do not throw money around carelessly. as for successfu l rich and famous are one kind of success, honest and decen and hard working family person is another even better kind of success. You can succeed in life without being rich and famous.and sometimes the famous can also wash their own clothes too.what a cockamamie idea.

There are times I wonder if at least one of those famous ones does their own laundry themselves. Hmm, probably not. But you're right, success isn't just about being rich and it isn't about doing one's own laundry :)

Just because you do your own laundry does not mean you are not successful. It just means you are helping the one you hired or you like doing your own laundry or maybe even you just don't want to hire someone to do it. I know of a few rich people that do their own laundry. My hubby's parents were very successful and did their own laundry. Some people just want to do it themselves and like how it is done when they do it better then when someone else does it

This is so true. People do things because they just like doing it, regardless of their economic status in life. Even some very rich people still get grease on their hands because they like tinkering with their cars' engines.

I don't think so.I think that most successful people are doing their laundry with the aid of washing machines of course.Personally, I like to do my own laundry so that I can make sure that my clothes are really clean.I also hate when someone else do the laundry and your clothes are stained or bleached and worst if it's lost.

I lost one to the cleaners when in one of those rare times I needed my laundry done. And yes, one of the reasons I do my own laundry is to make sure it's cleaned properly.

Maybe yes, because lots of people find doing their laundry a hard task and if you have someone who do the laundry for you that seems to be a luxury only the rich can afford. However, there could be others who are rich and is not too busy at home and wants to do the laundry themselves.Because they might not want others to touch their laundry.

I believe there are people, even rich people, who still do their own laundry. Probably not all their clothes, but a few personal stuff. I've a friend that until now doesn't want anybody to wash her undergarments.

That is not true. What is the connection of doing one's laundry from becoming successful? I guess there isn't. If you want to be successful in life, you have to strive hard in order to reach your dreams. Just believe that dreams come true when you make it more possible. There are so many ways and opportunities.

That's is definitely correct. Success needs hard work. Doing one's own laundry has no connection whatsoever to being successful or not.

People have become very successful by not only doing their own laundry but by doing other people's aswell. Dry cleaners and laundry mats have earned quite a bit of money for people. So, it sounds to me like the person who is asking this was just trying to convince himself that he is successful because he has his mom do his laundry for him.

Oh, definitely. I personally know one person who started her small laundry business. She actually does the laundry of our neighbor. She had vision and eventually saved enough to put up a small laundry business. She now has three outlets and is planning to expand further.

I don't think so. Washing our clothes doesn't mean that we are not successful in life. Some doing that because they have much time and they have enough money. They feel comfort when their own cloth washed by themselves, they do not want their favourite cloth being broken because of the wrong way to wash in dry clean or laundry.

I think that's one of the main reasons why people wash their own clohes even if they're already successful in life. They're a bit worried that their clothes might be damaged if somebody else washes it. And yeah, time is also a factor. Those who have lots of time on their hands can really do their own laundry

Hi beamer: I don't think so. I don't see the relationship between being successful and bit doing your own laundry. If you need it you have to do this to look good. When you have enough financial stability and you don't need to lose your time washing your own clothes then you can hire someone but if that's not the case I actually think the opposite. Washing your own laundry when you have to do this is a sign that shows that you are very responsible. ALVARO

I totally agree, actually. I really can't see a connection between being successful and doing one's laundry. It's a simple chore similar to doing the dishes or throwing out the trash or walking your dog. Just a sign of being responsible :)

I am doing my own laundry as well. I don't want other people to wash my clothes especially if they don't pay attention to the way each cloth should be washed. I believe that even people that are successful and busy should do some everyday things to keep them grounded and have a normal life. Imagine if you always have someone to take care of such stuff, what would you do if one day you had to do the laundry by yourself? It's not difficult, but there are a few people that I know who don't know how to do basic everyday stuff because they never had to.
@beamer88 (4259)

That's right. These simple chores are what makes life normal and for some, helps us in not forgetting where we came from. And yeah, if by some unfortunate event a person suddenly needs to do his laundry by himself, then at least he wouldn't be caught out in the rain so to speak.

I don't think so. There are just some people especially those person who has OC personality (Obsessive Compulsive)in which they want that all of their things is kept well, neat & clean. They would rather wash their own clothes even though they have high status in life. And it will also depend in a situation, if you don't have enough budget & want to save your money because you're working from a different place washing your own clothes is not bad a bad idea as one of the things to be saved.

I don't believe it is true. I only knew for a practical reason of doing your own laundry is the only way to budget and save money, instead of hiring people to wash your own clothes and pay them with your hard earned money. Some rich people hires people to wash their own clothes it is because they don't know how to wash their clothes, and some rich people hires people to wash their own clothes because they have a very busy schedules of meetings, work and no time to do the laundry even they knew how to do the laundry. A person success or not success in life relies on what he or she achieved own's goal or experiencing frustrations, rejections in life. It depends the fate to every person. And not doing laundry, a sign that you are not successful.

Yes, that's true. One good way to budget and save money is to do your own chores. Success shouldn't really be an issue when doing ordinary chores like this. I feel sad for those people who've been born rich and were not taught to do simple household chores. They'd be lost and wouldn't know what to do if they suddenly became poor, and it can happen anytime. Rich people can become poor overnight.

Having worked at a dry cleaners, it is very true that the ever-busy businessman does in fact have his clothes cleaned a lot. I really don't think doing your own laundry is a sign that you aren't successful. I wouldn't trust other people with cleaning my clothes because of all the things that could happen to them (again, my experience in a dry cleaners let me know the horrible things that could happen to clothes). It's a bit more work, sure, but it's not like it takes forever to do. In fact, you know what, I kind of think some of the people who have others do their laundry are a bit lazy. I mean, come on, it's not that hard to do some laundry. I get if it's something dry clean only or a fancy suit that needs to be specially cared for, but everything else? No way.

Yeah, there are people who don't like doing chores or just plain lazy about doing them. I've also had some bad experiences from the cleaners but more on losing a pair of these or that. And there's this one cleaner who uses detergents that caused allergic reactions to my kid. That's what our doctor said since it was the only thing out of the ordinary. We had no choice to bring our laundry to the cleaners. The rains were continuous and we didn't have a dryer.
