My mom just recently a Pomelo. My mom is eating it in a dip sauce made of vinegar and chili. I don't like who she try to ate the pomelo. So I give her a tip how to eat the pomelo. I peal the skin and separate the one that can be eaten. Once I am finished segregating the peal to the food. I make a quick separation and finish it with some white sugar. I am eating the pomelo like just a popcorn.

Pomellos come in two varieties white and pink, the white being a bit sweeter. Pomelos can be eaten just like one would eat an orange. You have to peel it and remove the inside skin and simply relish it. Additives are a choice and there is no hard and fast rule about them. If your mom likes it that way let her enjoy it that way.
When we were kids we would gently remove the outer skin and use it as a hat!

I had heard of pomelos and had read about them but I have never eaten one. It is not a fruit which is commonly imported to the UK. What I hadn't known before is that the grapefruit (which is well-known here) is a hybrid of the pomelo and an orange which was first developed in Barbados. That is very likely the reason that grapefruit are better known in this country than pomelo.
It is surprising to me how often this question ("How do you eat a pomello?") is asked on the Internet. It would seem to me fairly obvious that you don't eat the rind (though I might use the 'zest' - the green or yellow outside - in the same way that I use lime or lemon zest).
The pomelo has a very thick rind, which is bitter and usually considered inedible, though it can be candied or made into marmalade. I was quite surprised to see that, in most countries where it is common, the practice is to eat it (after peeling it) by dipping the segments in salt or vinegar or chili. Most English people would think this bizarre, if not actually disgusting!

Taste is a funny thing, CatLady. Many people enjoy a pickle or chutney (which usually has vinegar and often some chilli together with fruit which is often otherwise considered as a 'sweet').
I have to say that I prefer my oranges, grapefruit and so on with sugar but I love a hot lime pickle and salted lemons and pineapple with ham or cheese. I also like a little balsamic vinegar and just the slightest screw of pepper on strawberries, along with some sugar (no chilli, though!).

Hi Syoti, as regarding eating pomelo, i prefer to eat without adding any sugar to it. I think adding sugar makes the fruit tastes too sweet, and i don't really like it. Whenever i want to buy pomelo, i always make sure that i buy a sweet type pomelo. If too sour, i will blend it to make a pomelo juice. I ever blend pomelo and orange together to make juice and tastes quite delicious.

I eat pomelo dipping it in salt. I think that is fine with me. I won't like it to be dipped in vinegar.

I like eating pomelo dipped in salt when it tastes like bitter or sour. Salt is the choice to neutralize the bitterness flavor of a pomelo. Vinegar, I don't like since my taste buds were too sensitive.

I hate the taste of vinegar in fruits. Yes salt is really good when it's sour.

Eating a pomelo is simple and easily done for me. No need for dips. I eat my pomelo plain and simple. After having peeled the pomelo, I take the pulp out of its skin and eat it soon after just like that.
I have some friends who sprinkle the pulp with some salt. There are others who dip it in salt, too. As for those who dip it in vinegar or use sugar with it, I haven't encountered anyone yet who does it that way.
Thanks for your discussion. This has opened my eyes that indeed there are many ways to enjoy eating pomelo.

Pomelo on its own is sweet and i don't add condiments to it. It's fresh so it's alright to eat it straight out of the skin. I love the taste of it, but i hate the process of peeling it.. lol Though the inner skin is kinda bitter, but it actually adds some form of contrast to the overall taste. Of course it would be good to remove the skin completely, however i'm just too lazy to do it.. haha In thailand, i think they eat it with brown sugar.

After peeling it and removing the membrane, I eat it like a human being; with a fork and knife. I don't buy it often because at the same price per kilo as grapefruit, the waste from the thick skin makes it much more expensive.

hmmm, how do I eat my pomelo?!
well, just like you I peel off the outer skin and separate the part that I can eat and then I dip it in a pinch of salt and POOF! i eat it!
I think it depends on every individual on how they eat the type of fruit that they like! i mean each of us has it' own unique taste! =0

You can buy them in those big supermarkets, syoti. You can also buy them on the popular fruit stands in those big wet markets like Farmers. Though, they are a bit costly. They cost PhP100 a kilo and one pomelo would sometime be 1.5 kilo.
But the taste is worth the price. It's not everyday that we have to buy them though.

Honestly I have never really tried it, but I have heard it taste kind of like a grapefuit though. Personally I am not very fond of grapefruits, but I do like any type of fruits, so I am willing to give it a try if I ever get around to trying it, it does sound YUMMY!!!

Just peel the fruit, get the sacs out of each of the segments and much onto the juiciness.
There is no need to flavour it with sugar or vinegar. It is a fruit, good enough to eat by itself...don't you think so?

Yums. I cut it in half and have a special spoon with serrated edges for scooping out each section. I eat it without adding spices or sugar. BTW, I found a great picture of a kitten playing with a Pomelo rind. You've all got to see this:

I like it fresh, without adding anything. Just peel off the skin, then eat. Miss to taste it again. No pomelo from Philippines here. Only some pomelo from China. And expensive..
