Contaminated!

Hi friends, Do you think our birthday cake gets contaminated when we blow off the candles? Do you think the idea of having cupcakes instead of one large cake to share with everyone will work better? It will be great to hear your thoughts and views.

Having candles blown in a birthday cake has been a tradition for many many years now. If cakes are being contaminated by candle blowing then it should have been stopped years before. Plus I haven't heard of anyone dying because of a contamination of a birthday cake.

I have thought about it just a few months ago. It's possible that you can have droplet infection from the celebrant as he/she blows the cake. Now I don't have intentions to have a share from a birthday cake.

I would hate to see a tradition like blowing out the candles on a cake...STOPPED because of today's world paranoia over bugs...germs...and contamination! I truly believe the over use, the paranoia...using all the chemicals and anti-this, and anti=that, anti-bacterials has caused the super-bugs of today!

I don't think so if you're referring to the chemicals used to make the wax of the candle. I don't even think the trace of smoke would also contaminate it. There's however the possibility of germs. I mean, we're not really sure how clean the candle is. Some of us just stick it to the cake without even wiping it. As to the cupcakes, actually, it's been a practice of our family for a few years now. Instead of slicing the cake for the visitors, we give them cupcakes made the same way as the cake is. So the large cake we bring home after the party's over. The cupcakes are for the guests :)

I'm not against with the traditional way of celebrating birthdays. But it would be better and convenient to have a cup cake instead. You can also have both. Have a whole cake with candles for the celebrant to blow off and have some cup cakes to share with visitors.. :)
