Like what people say these days, 'It's not what you know, it's whom you know'. We are living in an unfair world and now, it is hard for us to find a decent job if we don't have someone to back us up.
I don't like that system. I would want to be accepted in a job because the employers believe that I can contribute something in a company, not because someone has referred me.

"if we are living in an unfair world and now,it is hard to find a decent job if we donot have someone to back us up."in one side ,this point is right ,but if everyone of us think this point is right when does the person up to back us up.so in my opinion,it is right that it is hard for someone to find a decent job if we donot have someone to back us up,but "hard " not mean "no chance".i think ,if we try our best to do well,"Gold will glitter forever" .So everyone, work hard ,make beautiful future with our own hand!

I think a good reference is a must of senior jobs. But for entry level jobs, a good educational background and a decent communication skill is good enough. Of course, if the educational background is not great, then we do need good references. Sometimes in recession despite having good educational background you need additional good references to help get a good job. So in a nutshell having a good reference is always helpful.
Cheers!

Yes, a good network can really up your chances of landing a job, but skills are still necessary. Big multinationals don't just hire people because that person has some very good references. The person should still possess the qualities and skill the company is looking for. You might be an engineer but if the company is looking for an engineer with management skills and you don't, they might not hire you even with your references. I know it's tough for fresh graduates. But one tip. Impress them when you're interviewed. Not through your resume, but how you conduct yourself while being interviewed. Project confidence and show them you're the right person for the job. Sometimes it's how you answer their questions that can make a difference :)

Sometimes that's how it work but I do believe that if you are really skillful and confident you can have the job that you've been longing. In my resume, there is no reference that is listed. But I got the job that I wanted because I am qualified for the job.

We have the same problem in my country. Every manager wants to hire young people, with notable experience. The problem is, if people are young, they can't get to much experience, and if they do have lots of experience, they are not so young anymore. You have to start somewhere to get experience, but you can't start anywhere without it. It is a vicious circle. What i think you should do is keep trying to get hired. Don't miss any opportunity which seams reasonable to you. In the end, someone will hire you.

Yes, the trend right now is of course a good reference. Someone with power. But that is not the case for all the rest. There are still that would require a good performance and great skill. Eventually in your case, it is quite hard to land a job since it is most likely that you do not have any great backer and as of the moment you do not have any experience. Perhaps the best thing that you can do is find some companies that accept some sort of on the job training or perhaps volunteer for some work that will give you the chance to experience the necessary skill to do your work. From there, you can work your way up and apply for a better position considering that by such time you will have the experience already. Best to you and hope you will be able to find the right job later on.

In today corporate world, if you are looking for a well paid position and high level management post, you need to have good reference, or know someone that have connection within the corporation, some call it networking while other may call it reference. It is a fact that graduated from local colleges nowadays doesn't guarantee a steady and well paid position automatically within a multi-national corporation anymore like the old time, where the standard of college (university) degree for graduates from local university and colleges is at least at par and above world standard in engineering and science field. Many of today local graduates had very low standard of intellectual and knowledge in many developing countries due to their local university and colleges lower standard of curriculum for political reasons, it is very important for corporation to make sure they can hire someone who is proficient in the field of engineering before she is hired.
