You don't say where you are, so I'm assuming that you are using www.ebay.com (in the US).
If you are listing a Fixed Price item at $8.00, you will pay an Insertion Fee of $0.50 and a Final Value fee based on the total amount of the sale, including the cost of the item, shipping, and any other fees a seller may charge, but excluding any sales tax of 10% of the final value.
Assuming that your $8.00 includes shipping, the customer will pay you $8.00 and eBay will charge you $0.50 PLUS $0.80 if the item sells, so you will receive $6.70. If you are charging shipping separately, then eBay will charge you 10% of the TOTAL amount which the customer pays, less any Sales Tax which you may have to charge.
This is the page which describes the fees: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html
There are extra fees for Listing Upgrades, which you probably won't need but they are described here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html#upgrade
eBay have a handy Fee Calculator: http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/news/Feecalculator.html which should help you in deciding what to charge to make your sale economically viable.
PayPal's fees depend on whether you have a Personal account or a Pro account. You need to visit PayPal's fees page to calculate what, if anything, you will be charged.
You may also need to find out whether you are liable for Sales Tax. If you are only selling a few items and making less than a certain amount, you probably aren't liable but you would be wise to find out what the rules are for your State.
