Frequently I read discussions about how people are getting more and more cruel, like animals. That life is getting more and more unsafe.
I don't agree with that.
With me others don't do.
Stephan Pinker wrote: The Better Angels of Our Nature.
It's not made up, based on science, history, all the info taken over a long long time.
The result is spectaculair: during the pre-history 15% of the people died because of violence. In 2005 it was only 0.03%. Less change is will be able to get this at zero.
So for those who are really interested in this subject, who do have faith in the human being and are not blind for what human being was like through the ages, they can read the book or watch the lecture on youtube or google (last one better quality).

Wow, that's a pleasantly surprising revelation!
A reading of the abstract at http://www.stevenpinker.com/publications/better-angels-our-nature convincingly explains the phenomenon in good contrast. An example: the murder rate of Medieval Europe was more than thirty times what it is today. Astonishing, really! Well, it is worth reflecting that wars between developed nations have declined-quite true.
This is attributed to the spread of governance, literacy and cosmopolitanism helping us control our impulses and empathizing with others.
It is a redeeming revelation for a generation that moans of the world having become a cruel place. Something to rejoice and celebrate on the eve of Thanksgiving. Who deserves the thanks?

I was pleased to hear this too. The thing is media is always focusing on bad things. Even if it only happens once in a life time.
It's good to know that there really did change something. I also do think that governments do make a difference, religion could do the same so does education.
If there is someone to thank I think it's the society world wide. No matter if you agree, or like it or not, as long as society has a voice, there are some people who hear this, there will be a way found to change something (sooner or later).
Human rights, rights of woman, kids rights, equal rights, same rights for everyone, it's all an example from how things changed, opinions changed if it comes to violence to others.

I agree with you I don't think people are getting any more cruel or dangerous. I think there have always been dangerous people but for the most part most people are very good nad would never intentionally hurt anyone. It sounds like a very interesting thing to read though I will probably check that out. I am sad to say that there was some really bad human behavior reported due to Christmas shopping. I think Christmas shopping really stresses a lot of people out, that is no excuse to treat others badly though.

Hello WakeUpKitty,
That's really amazing but we still see violence every where these days too.I think there are 2 reasons for such a decline in percentage. The first one is the medical facilities are improved these days which has decreased the mortality rate and secondly is the population which has effect on the percentage.
