A Real Christmas Song

Several years ago, composer Leigh Haggerwood decided to write & sing a "real Christmas song". Like many people, he was disappointed about the demise of the UK Christmas charts & it seemed like the same old songs had been playing for decades. Leigh wanted to create a new, heart-warming song with strong melodies that would capture the true spirit of Christmas. He imagined Victorian England; when Christmas was less commercial and many traditions first began. He recalled the excitement he felt as a child. In July this year, he wrote this original song in time for Christmas this year. He went to the record companies & asked for their support, but they wouldn't compete with British TV series, The X Factor - a show which has dominated the Christmas charts with a non-festive single for years. So he decided to try and do it himself. He gathered his musician friends which he collectively called 'The Florin Street Band', then requested the help of a string section & the English Chamber Choir & booked time at a studio in London to record the song, My Favourite Time of Year, which will start playing automatically once the page has quickly loaded. http://www.florinstreet.com/ I found this one by accident. Bravo England! It is due to be released on iTunes & Amazon on December 5. Is this something you will be downloading & supporting? Do you prefer to hear & see those who both write & perform their own original songs? What do you consider to be "a real Christmas song"? Merry Christmas to you all!

G'day mate. Long time no see. :-) I am not generally a fan of Christmas, well not the Christmas that it has become in recent years anyway, so I was not really jumping with excitement to see this video, but I actually enjoyed it. If the discussion had not been yours I would have passed it by, but I was pleasantly surprised to actually like the song. I loved the old school historical charm to the video and the fact that these guys funded the project by themselves. I love to see real artists getting out there and being supported as opposed to the mainstream commercial artists who are nowhere near as talented for the most part. Merry Christmas? Too far out for me to be cheering about it just yet, even though decorations first started popping up here over a month ago.

Even if I did not come on here again, I would still keep in touch through email. I had to take a break from here in order to cater to my other online social network addiction, Squidoo. I took part in a challenge to build 30 web pages in 30 days, so I did not even open up my email account that MyLot emails go to during November so I could focus on it. You can see the amount of work that I did here: http://www.squidoo.com/30-pages The page links to each and every page that I made during the month. Business has also been very hectic with large shipments of stock coming in and huge amounts of orders going out. We had to rent a storage shed to keep all the excess stock in as there was no way that we could keep it all here, need to move to a bigger house again! I had not done any of the acting work for about two months until last weekend when I went up to Brisbane to work on "Mabo" which is all about Eddie Mabo and land rights. I am sure you are familiar with the case. I have been watching myself on Terra Nova though which has been fun. The kids have been pausing it and taking photos of me on the TV. Really funny stuff. They love it. No big plans this Christmas, just a quiet one. My daughter is flying off to see the rellies in Melbourne for a couple of weeks on Boxing day. We might go for a few nights camping somewhere, but we are laying low because we are going to the USA in March for a business trip/family holiday. That will be awesome! What have you been up to of late? Are you up to anything special at Xmas?

Strewth! Never thought I'd see you again! Thought you'd ditched us poor little people here for the big money in acting! How'd it all work out in the end? We do tend to back the underdog up against the bigger established behmoths, don't we? -Especially up against the chart-dominating X-Factor. That reminds me - gotta order some more stuff off you... Hope you have a good Christmas anyway. What are your plans? Back to Victoria for celebrations with the rellies?

Goodness! Thirty-30, eh? Hope you found time to get some sun amongst all that! Those lenses look really interesting. I didn't know you could convert a panelvan into a ute! I'm not on Facebook or Twitter anymore - can't stand the buggers! I spend very little time online these days - another computer bit the dust - two of 'em actually. Here's some "likes" to add to your collection & you can insert them as appropriate: Going to the States? Try & time it for the next Free Energy Convention if you can or if you are swinging through Idaho. I've gotten back into circuit design & building up Free Energy circuits. I've built another SSG, resolving all the problems I had with the earlier model, but picked up a few different problems with this one (doesn't quite have the herbs). Currently stock-piling scrap metal in anticipation of our ASX recovery. My dad re-married & I went to the wedding up in Brissy. My wife's still up in Brissy & I have no idea what's happening for Christmas.

Thought you'd like it. Urban - I'm wondering if you can tell me... if in England, in the Victorian era, the buskers, like the opening scenes in this clip, do they still only start playing after the money is in their hat/bag/case? Ours go non-stop regardless of the cashflow or the presence / abscence of people!

Yes, that's a fair point & one we'd do well to bear in mind. It seemed like plain good manners at the time, but I suppose you'd be right & they would be forced to do whatever worked best, unless they were compelled to do so by existing laws at the time or the outcry of the general population!

Thanks for being my first responder! Things are looking really down in Europe (& everywhere else too) right now... hope something like Christmas lifts their spirits. I felt seeing the film clip that it was like stepping inside an old Christmas card - snow covered roof-tops, candle lights, fires, snow-fights, carol singers ~ beautiful! Seems to contrast quite markedly with the sun beaming down on me here, sweat pouring out - so it's refreshing, I guess, in a way. I'm wondering if in England, their buskers, like the opening scenes in the clip, still only start playing after the money is in their hat/bag/case? Ours go non-stop regardless of the cashflow!
