Does education mean getting high educational qualifications and obtaining certificates , diplomas and degrees ? To me education is growing up and getting trained to cope up with life . It means understanding the shades and vivacity of existence ,loving nature and adjusting with the surrounding and understanding pain and suffering of man and animals .
I am hurt when so called educated people throw stones at innocent animals , beat a man extensively when caught stealing , ignore and use abusive languages addressing beggars , misbehave with servants and do all those things which are not expected from educated people . How can they take law in their own hands ? Is this education ? I just wonder how can we call these heartless inhuman people educated ? What is your opinion ?

Hi rolly!
You are very right educational qualification does not make a person educated.
One needs to be cultured and civilized and should know what is right and wrong in a society. Many of the so called educated do such nasty acts that they put illiterate people to shame. May be they think that they are qualified and they could do anything and they nurture a very high ego.

Our education should make us a better citizen not the other way round.
One needs to be humble, polite, patient and thoughtful to show that s/he is really educated.
In my life I have seen many people who are simple Graduates but they are super human beings and you love to be in their company.
On the other hand I have come across few people who hold Masters Degrees or even are P.hD but behave oddly.
They want to show that as they have acquired some higher degrees they are above earth and others are inconsequential in front of them.
Dpk
PS - I submitted my first part of response in a hurry as some visitors dropped in.

I think Albert Einstein put it quite rightly in this famous quote:
Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school
If we reflect on this, it has a very profound meaning. It implies that mere academic accomplishment is not education at all. Even further, academics don't really can not meaningfully empower people with what is required to understand life in all its facets. It is something beyond education that we all need if we have to lead a philanthropic & meaningful existence.

Thanks friend for your lovely remark . It is true that such values are beyond education . One must have a philanthropic bent of mind to make life meaningful .

I am too old to be shocked by that. If governments don´t behave well with their people and with others, single individuals can´t do better as a whole. All you are saying is as bad as wars. There is no reason to start a war, specially in another country. University (or schools) teach us how to read and write, but not how to respect other human beings.

It's true friend that university or learning centers do not teach how to respect others but the teachings they impart make a person philanthropic and socially correct . At least this is expected of them . Many have failed to understand the quintessence of education and its implication .

Someday. I spoke with a tourist. While I am speaking, suddenly Someone came and interrupted us. He was a guy. I thought he showed us no honor, respect. He asked money from our guest who is a wheelchair. I acknowledged that he is not educated well. I did not know how on earth he came toward us and ask money suddenly. I don't have a courage to angry with him, because he was still drunk. In my idea he should not suppose to do that. It is very uneducated. Shame on him. Thank you

For me education and common sense are two different things. People who are educated also lack common sense sometimes and people who are uneducated also lack common sense sometimes. So its mutual in my thoughts. In all depends on what you are taught when you were young.

You are right icyrose but as you know education has been connotations and it does not always point to bookish learning . I meant to say when will we grow up to learn and realize them to behave properly in society .
P.S . Thanks for responding to my discussions

well educated with certificates and such does not mean a person has compassion or commonsense, it just means they have the capacity to remember what they have read in books, so many many people who have certificates are igmorant to what life is all about, that has been proven by a lot of out politicians.

They are not really educated they just got the certifications that they needed. They could have been those students that just pass classes because they are cool with the professors or have family connections. They are spoiled and dont appreciate hard work so they take everything for granted. There are many idiots like this running around with lots of money too, but everything was handed to these people so they dont respect the challanges of life its just a game to them. Therefore they dont fully mature, no need to hate them though they are just like big kids and it may take a little longer for them to grow.

Hello friend. I agree with you on all counts. Education is a lifelong process of acquiring knowledge and using it for the betterment of a person's life and the world around him. Earning a diploma does not necessarily mean that the person has become educated. To me, a person who is respectful, polite, caring, compassionate and uses his knowledge to create a more wholesome, progressive and peaceful life for himself and his fellow human beings is educated, more so than the following few real-life examples. A president enriches himself at the expense of the countries taxpayers. A doctor performs unneeded surgery just so he can charge a higher fee to the poor unsuspecting patient. A judge pronounces a verdict in favor of the person who gave him bribe money. An employer chooses to hire a less qualified applicant just because said applicant is the son of a friend who had done him a big favor. These are not marks of educated people. Frustrating, isn't it? Anyway, let's look on the brighter side of life and know that Someone up there has a perfect record in His Book. God bless you rollypolly.

I concur with you in this regard. Beating animals, thieves or misbehaving with servants -- these should not be done. Education should make us good towards others. On the contrary education and wealth gives proudness in people and they ill treat people the way you have described. They also throw stones on animals. How to correct them-- they should realise of their own-- any amount of teaching will be of no use.

Hello rollylolly,
No.Piling up certificates of degrees and diplomas is not we call an education.Education is given to the person to make him/her more civilized and if he does not become civilized then too than its a waste of money incurred in education.
Yes there are people who react like illiterates at times besides being so much qualified.
I feel pity for them because they are worse than the illiterates as even education too could not make them educated.

I think education starts in the family. If parents give their child a good education, he/ she will become a decent person. Also, education is continued in school. I totally disagree with those teachers who come in class and just transfer information to the pupils. Their role is much more important than that and they should assume it. They must form the pupils, teach them about how to behave, too. Last, but not the least, Society has a major role in education. It can form a personality, through its rules.

Thanks for your response taura . You rightly said and I too feel 'charity begins at home' . Teachers play a very important role in forming characters of stuents . In later life the society has an important role to play .
Good wishes
