Hello all ,
Sometime people here in mylot surprise me. In a nice way though. Today I was really into a discussion I was reading to the point that I read every single response on it and with it being on the mylot digest you know there is a lot of them. I was really into it, the subject isn't important but it was about goats of all things, and after reading for about 15 minutes I decided to respond as well.
After I responded, and in my response I felt sympathy for the poster, I went to her profile to see where she lived that she could have goats in her yard and found she was only 39 years old...when I really thought from her discussions that went on and on...that she was at least in her 60's if not older.
So I was totally in shock. Has anything like that ever happened to you? Do you have a story you can share about it? Have you ever thought something of someone, like their age and you were totally wrong about them, here in mylot only? Have you ever been surprised by something like this here in mylot or is it just me?
Cheers and happy mylotting my friend
Talk to you soon, Chris

Isn't it funny how we can paint a picture in our minds of what a person is like by what they write. Then we find out otherwise and it can be a little surprising.
Of course, that's assuming that the information that is contained in someone's profile is correct. Many times it isn't. People will sometimes put a different age or something because they don't really want to put all of their actual information on a public forum. Or, they just want to mislead people for whatever reason.
Unless you know someone personally and have met them in real life, you can't be totally sure that the information they put online is really accurate.
It is interesting though and a little fun to picture people when you read their words. It would be neat to do an experiment and take several people and let them read posts by different people here and then ask them to describe what they think the person is like. I bet you would get totally different descriptions from all the people. Then actually meet the person to see who was the most accurate.
Hey, I think I just came up with a new reality show for TV!

Yes millertime, a new reality show like that would be fun. I don't always believe everything I read in people's profiles either but most of the time their age is pretty accurate, I think, because they have no reason to lie about their age, do they?

Yup same thing as well. I don't know about the goats 'though. It's about the age. I always thought I am reading or responding to someone who's of my age or at least a little older than I am. But when I looked at the profile to add them, I will be surprised to see that they are really old. And it's amazing because I still treat them like my age and see them still young.

The goats wasn't the point. The point was her talking about all the work it takes to take care of them and how tired she is all the time. She doesn't have a husband and her kids, I don't know their ages but she talks like they are older because she mentions that her older son comes sometimes to help her with the goats.
My point wasn't the goats or the fact of who the person is, the point was that the way she was talking about being tired I figured she was much older and so I was just really surprised at her age. She shouldn't be so tired...is what I was thinking.
If the person I am talking about reads this I hope she knows I am not being nasty or anything, she isn't the one in question, it is her age I am talking about that surprised me.

I can think of two times that happened to me. Once I thought this person was in her mid twenties, around my age (at the time I was in my mid twenties, I'm 30 now). I was shocked when I saw on her profile she was 50. She talked like she was of my generation and was so into the 'now' I was amazed. Then another time I was convinced a persnickety poster was in her 60s. Just the way she spoke she talked like she had been around to the point where she had earned her right to judge people. Seeing as she still had a job I knew she couldn't be retired. I went to her profile and lo and behold she was my age. I just kept thinking I wonder how someone my age thinks they know it all? They haven't a clue.

I know what you mean. Sometimes that happens in real life too. My daughter has a friend that is 26 years old and she tells stories that you would think this girl has lived for 70 years. At her young age she has had more jobs than I have had in a life time, I am 54 years old. And I don't mean just meanily jobs. She had been to school for years according to her and has taken so many different majors and has had so many different types of jobs.
She says she has taken a course on trees and worked in the forestry department for a year or so. She has taken a course on physcoligy and worked for the government for a year in that. She has taken a course in furnace and air conditioning and has worked in that for a year. She has taken a course in office management and worked in that field for awhile. She has taken a course in something to do with the oilfields and worked in that for awhile.
And now she says she is working as an IT in the oilfields, that they sent her to school for that. Like how can she have all this under her belt when she is only 26 years old, come on now, you expect people to believe that....incredible if you ask me.

Mostly people have surprised me by posting things as if they were teenagers and looking at their profile it turns out that they were a lot older. It amused me, but it did not shock me. Some people act not their age everywhere

I can usually spot the really young ones here, the teens. I rarely can respond to their discussions and most of the time I don't know what they are talking about. They seem to talk a lot about video games and games you play online.

The teens also want to get rich easily and quickly with no work at all. I don´t answer those posts, but I have fun reading them. It must be my evil side now that I´m old.

Well, that happened to me too here at Mylot. There was this particular respondent to my discussions, that i mistook to be someone in his 40's. I mistook him to be that age because of his responses.
His responses are lengthy because he really explains the topic and would sometimes have a link for that topic. I was surprised when i told him, that i thought of him as already matured and was surprised when he said , he is just 22.

Well, 22 year olds can be mature. They aren't kids anymore at that age, but I know what you mean with thinking he was in his 40's. Another member brought to my attention that their profile might not even be correct when they post their age but I think the majority of the members put in their right age. What do you think?

Actually, here in Mylot, age doesn't matter. As long as each one could relate, then why would age be of a bother to anyone.

Can you guess how old I am? lol I know what you mean, it has happened to me quite a bit. I didn't really know much about looking at people's profiles because I was new here but now I know more about it so I look more and read about people before I talk to them. That way I know a little about them before I respond and then I can maybe respond more apporperately.
For me it was more about the gender of the person I was talking to. I liked to know if I am talking to a girl or a guy. Sometimes from their avatar you can't tell. I have answered a discussion as if the poster was a girl once and it turned out it was a guy and he was offended for some reason. I am sure I am not the only person here that may do that so why he got upset, I'm not sure.
Well, here's to you guessing my age, don't look first though. I want to see if you can guess close or not.
littlemissy here signing off for now,
talk to you later my friend

Well, there are a lot of times when you read a discussion in here that someone has started, or some of the different ones that someone has started and you start assuming one thing, and usually end up finding out something else. They could be older than what you thought, younger than what you thought, but in reality I do not really thing age really matters. It is what people choose to come in here and talk about and their experiences associated with them as well.

If I'm interested in someone I will definitely check their profile without any pre-concieved ideas...that way, I don't get a shock or a surprise.
I'm interested in the goat discussion and haven't been able to find it. I have two pet goats of my own.

It wasn't much about the goats, it was the way she stated things that surprised me. That she was soooo tired because the goats were taking up so much of her time and they were sooo much work. She has about a dozen of them and ended up she kept them and didn't sell them afterall.

I know and sometimes I think their gender wrong as well. Sometimes from reading their responses I think they are female and then when I check their profiles I see they are male. Not that it matters, it just surprises me sometimes.

Like it happened just now. I checked your profile after I commented to you and I see you are male and yet from your avatar I thought you would be a female as usually it is females that like cats. I love your avatar....
