An Observation in the Mall

I recently noticed this as my sister pointed this out to me: When we go to the mall, dressing simple, the salespeople would just leave us alone while we go about our business. That didn't bother me at all. In fact, I prefer it that way as I enjoy shopping for things without distraction. I dislike people giving me some sales talk especially when I'm not planning to buy anything. One day, we just dropped by the mall to kill time before attending a social event nearby. That means our attire then was entirely different. We wore nice dresses with accessories and our hair styled properly. The treatment of these salespeople drastically changed. As we enter each shop, the salespeople would greet us politely when we pass near them. We weren't even planning to buy anything! Ah.. Clothing really matters to people these days. They won't entertain you unless you look wealthy, classy, and presentable.

yeah right.
people are choosy nowadays and that's boo!!
whenever i would look out for customers(since i am in the real estate) i would treat everyone equally it's because rich people dress simply.
rich people hide in their rugs which is really amazing.
goes to show that rich people stays rich because they humble themselves.

You're much more clever shanemae! Clothing has little to do with wealth. Many people who appear poor are in fact very very rich. Also, rich people know that it's useless to spend their money on clothes and would rather spend it on other more important things (such as real estate).

Hi Seriousnuts, nice to see you again, fortunately my job is still there, as my boss just was threatening me and nothing else, so I'm relaxed now. Well, now coming back to your thread, yeah these days people give importance to you depending on what you're wearing and how you look, this culture is in my country too and probably all developing countries would be facing this problem where a rich gets more importance than an average man, which is so disappointing to see. I hate it when people are judged by how much money they have. If we're dressed ordinarily that means we don't have any money to buy clothes and hence they'd not entertain us at all, rich having money behind them are more inclined to buy clothes than us, so these sales guys would be after them all the time giving them extra importance, which in a way is a marketing strategy, but they're ridiculing the base of customer service where they've been taught to respect each customer as god.

Hi shailesh! It's nice to see you too. I'm glad that you still have your job. Some bosses just like to threaten their employees. I hope you are doing well with your educational pursuits.
It's really disappointing how many of the salespeople judge their customers based on their appearances. Even if those people with simple clothes are poor, they should treat them equally. It's not that these poor people are creating any ruckus in the shops. It is their freedom to shop in the malls and shouldn't be ridiculed.

I agree with you, most of the salespeople would look on how a person dressed. They will keep on convincing a person to buy an item if they look good outside and seems to be wealthy. When we are going to the mall to buy something, we prefer to dress in simple attire like we are just inside our house because the mall is just beside our village. We weren't also bothered by sales personnel because of our looks and that's what we also like because it is very irritating to hear their sales talk.

I see, you have a mall beside your village. How convenient is that! That is one of the reason why people shouldn't judge shoppers based on clothing. People like to wear comfortable clothes. It would just be too silly to dress up just for a mall near your house. LoL.

Well yeah some people are like that. They tend to think that people who dress up really nice and looking so classy even with simple dress have money and that you will spend money on their products. But if we dress up bad and our skin looks rough, they won't mind you and even looked at you like a sh%t LOL! People judge people on their physical looks. But if we are really rich, we can play on them and slap those money in their faces. I'm kidding!

LOL. It's like going into a store and then being ignored by a salespersons who thinks you're too poor to afford any of their products, and then to their surprise, you suddenly buy everything on display! If that happens, that would be really an awkward and embarrassing experience to these salespersons. I've heard it happen in real life - a lady buying everything in a shelf after hearing a rude comment from a saleslady about not being able to afford anything.

That was so rude of the salesperson, to judge a person based on her things. What a nerve to say those offensive comments out loud for her to hear. Good thing she was able to afford the LV bag haha. What an experience. I would like to check her blog too, it sounds interesting.

try reading Giselle Sanchez's blog about her very own experience, I think, that happened in Beverly Hills, USA. She was at the time a new comer in showbiz and doesn't have so much money. She was using fake LV bags and one time she was invited by a friend in the US and her friend told her a real LV since she's already a celebrity.
She don't wanna buy because she finds it really expensive for a bag. She was just starting in showbiz and doesn't really have so much money 'though she can still buy one if she wants. But she's a bit stingy. The sales guy (or girl, can't remember) then looked at her bag and told her something nasty about carrying a fake bag. Telling her this is how our people do it. they come in the store looking for the bags and started making fake ones.
She felt offended and abruptly asked the guy what's the most expensive LV bag they're selling... and then she bought one. Can't remember whether she bought the most expensive one or she chose another LV bag. It's really funny reading her blog.

I have some experience like this in the mall, one time i go to mall just a simply and not well dressed the sales people they never approach you to offer some promos, and the next time when i go with my foreign fiance just like you are celibrity they way they approach you. So i guess they are not fair!!!

I see. So having a foreigner as your shopping companion could also get a lot of attention from the sales people. That's really unfair. I don't usually get bothered by being ignored in the stores when I dress in simple clothes, but when I notice another shopper after me come inside and treated extra nicely, then I can't help to feel the unfairness of their actions.

yeah, i agree to that. i've had that experience too and mind you, sales people really notice you automatically if you dress elegantly. my technique in buying items, i dont wear nice at all. a simple blouse and jeans just to avoid their sales talk. since i want to be select without nuisance. =)

That's a clever technique, shellster! Since they tend to judge people based on looks, then we might as well use that to our advantage! If we want attention, then we should dress nicely. If we hate to be pestered while shopping, then we should dress simple.

I had observed that. Sales persons usually look for a prospective buyer through customers' clothes, accessories and the way they walk. If they think you can afford to buy, sales ladies tend to convince you to buy and accompany you wherever you go inside the store premises.

Yeah, the sales peoples become friendlier if you appear to be a prospective buyer. I agree that they look at the clothes, accessories, and the way a person walks.

Hi Seriousnuts,
That's funny. I haven't had that experience. I've gone to the mall and really don't have much money to spend at all. I don't dress like a bum but I do wear just regular jeans and top, flip flops...nothing too fancy or classy and I get stopped all the time. It doesn't just happen in the mall...It's everywhere. I find it annoying as crap because there have been times when I actually would like some assistance and those are the times that I can't find a salesperson available at all.

Yeah, it is funny how salespeople change their treatment based on how you dress. I too just wear regular clothes (not shabby ones) but those aren't presentable enough to grab their attention. However, they do start to appear friendlier after seeing me grab something and head for the counter. It's fine to be ignored especially if you don't plan to buy anyway. But I agree, it does bother me if no one would approach me just when I needed assistance.

hello, seriousnuts.i can not agree with you more.i always got the same exprience as yours.perhaps it is natural, for the responsiblity for sales just to look for the potential buyer.their duty is to let the shop earn money.there is no doubt that they were not willing to waste time in the person who just look the clothes and do not buy.also, the one and the sale have never recognized before,so the only thing that matters whether you buy or not is your suit.your suit can probably show your rich or not.i can understand what they did.if i were them,i would did the same way.it is just my point of view!thanks....hope your adivice soon.....

Hi jackgone. I agree that it is only natural for them to behave this way. They associate appearances with one's wealth - and therefore to a person's willingness to buy. Despite my simple clothing, I sometimes get attention too when I start asking many questions that make me appear to be a prospective buyer.

I agree. There are many rich people who would rather dress in simple clothes. So it's really wrong to judge a person's ability to buy things by what they wear.

haha, yeah, people judge you by your clothes. classy clothes means that you have money and that makes you a person who can afford to buy their products. because you are wealthy, people have this stereotype that you would buy anything as long as it pleases you or as long as they are able to convince you that it will please you LOL
tip: if you are rich, dress simple so no one will bother you and ask you for money.
i've met really wealthy people but dress in shorts, pants and shoes like a jobless person just doing nothing. haha!!

I agree with you. Many rich people like wearing simple clothes. It's like a fashion statement of the rich: to dress poor. Some people who don't really have money care so much about their presentation, because they are afraid to be seen as poor people. That is why they try so hard to appear rich when in fact they aren't really rich. It's really wrong to judge one's wealth based on clothing and appearance, but it is just natural for people to think that way.
