those beggars are multiplying

Along the way to as we go up the hill to where the church is, we would always pass by two beggars. My husband and i deemed it proper not to give them alms because they seemed not at all sick ,but just pretending to be.
But inside the church , there’s an old senile man who keeps going around the parishioners begging. I would always give him alms, because I know he is not capable of having a job anymore, unlike the two above. The priest would say that we give our alms after the mass, but the beggar keeps going around so we would give him alms.
Then, last Sunday, I noticed that along the way there are two added beggars. Yet they seemed like still able to work, should they want to.
We don’t give them any alms because it’s the reason why they are multiplying.
Could you share your views guys?

In my opinion, beggars shouldn't be allowed on the streets or anywhere where they can beg for alms. We have so many organizations, so many people claiming that they have foundation for the poor. Since asking for alms on the streets is legal, these beggars are multiplying. They find it easier to earn money on the streets than to apply for a job. If only the government will not allow any beggars on the streets, there will be none. Can't you see? Beggars are everywhere but the government never bothers to solve this issue. We also know that some of them are forced by syndicates to beg for alms. The syndicates are earning a lot from them. It's so easy to get rid of these beggars and to give them decent jobs. The problem again is they are tolerated by the government, no one but the government should be blamed for this.

You are very correct there. Should the government do something to prohibit beggars on the street , those poor people will be discouraged to beg.
Some poor people seeing beggars getting money from begging, encourages them also to beg. This should be nipped on the bud by the government.

well, at least he could have asked imploringly, so you could have given him even a piece. But blocking you all along. . .

I remember one time when I was really so exhausted. I bought a new netbook and some groceries. I decided to also buy food and eat at home because I can't eat in the restaurant or fastfood with so many things on my hands. While walking on the street going home, one boy tried to get my food. I told them I haven't taken my lunch yet, and said sorry but I can't give my food to him for I was also starving. He never listened to me and blocked my way for so many times, whenever I walk to the left, he'll also go there and block me, if I'll go to the right, he'll also do the same. Good thing there's a gentleman who shouted at him while I was also shouting that I'll get my tear gas and will spray all of its content to him. That's the only time he stopped pestering me. I never felt any mercy for that boy because I was really starving that time, and he's very rude. Ah! It's the government and the parents whose to be blamed.

In my city, being a beggar is a sort of profession and so many people will give them a coin that they prefer to beg istead of working.
They use all sorts of tricks and people will fall for them. It´s a shame and nothing is done by the authorities.

Some young people beg when they should be working. And you can see from their faces that they are well fed. I have seen beggars in many places in the world. It´s not their fault, but of the people who give them money.

That's right , the givers are sometimes the culprit in letting those beggars have the courage to beg as their profession. Sad, but it's true.
But me, i choose the blind , crippled , disabled and very old & needy beggars to give alms. I can't help myself from pitying them, that's why.

Some people indeed have no shame. They make begging their profession and yet some of them could very well get a job, yet don't do it.
I think, in every place of the world, there are beggars. If only the people will not give them alms, they would not multiply.

I agree with you Simplyd, they had multiply because we are giving them. But though I felt irritated sometimes, I still give small amount because I know it is still hard for them to ask money from a stranger. Especially now that Christmas is approaching. expect for many beggars.

I really hate beggars who used their children especially babies to ask money from people. That is child abuse and I hope our government will take action against this. Every time I go to Baclaran, I often see this beggar who carry their disabled child and the child really looks awful. I know they really need money to survive but they shouldn't use children for this kind of racket.

How i wish the government can indeed do something about those beggars using their children to beg. I think it's the DSWD's task to do that.
This Christmas season, they should round up those beggars on the streets.

Much as i would like to give them, i don't. choose who to give alms. Only those i see that are deserving , like the disabled , blind and very old people.
Yes, this Christmas they sure will multiply, and some would be using their babies to beg.

yes Simplyd.
if i see the beggar is still capable of working and is not disabled i will not give them alms.
there are a lot here in our place. the ones we call Badjao in our dialect.
they live in boat houses. some say they have a village.
these Badjao have a lot of kids!! they have dozens of them.
their only means of living is to ask for alms!
even kids are taught to ask for alms! too bad that they grew in number because these couples just keep on producing kids.
when you come here you'll see a lot of them strolling in the city.

Yes, the people who are very poor are the ones who have plenty of children.
And to think that they use these children to beg and sustain them a living! It's disgusting that they know they cannot feed the children well, yet don't do anything to control themselves. Or better yet, have a family planning. The community has Centers for Health Care and it is for free, so why don't they go to them?

I thought there are NGOs' dealing with this primitive tribes, shane? Or isn't the DSWD in charge of them?
They should be given attention, so that they will know how to control giving rise to our population. Consequently, poverty could be alleviated if they will be controlled in producing more babies to feed.
I pity these people indeed, shane.

i don't think they are educated Simplyd and i think they are not aware of that too.
i had one patient who is a Badjao.
they smell awful! i was holding my breath when i administered the medicine.
they look illiterate too. you know the look na "parang tanga lang".-(stupid look)
i feel for them but at the same time disgusted because they keep on producing child which they cannot sustain.
(sigh) i think the government is not seeing this problem too.

hello Simplyd!
Whenever I see a beggar and I think that he/she can find work than asking alms, I never give. People made their life better because they decided to and worked for it. So, i think beggars can work too. There are many ways to earn and if they are just industrious and have the perseverance, I think they can really have a work even if this pays them least. My mother always say that "Life is what we make it".

That's very true , greninee and your mother is so right.
If we want to provide for ourselves, we can find jobs or something that can pay us, as long as we don't choose what they are. And besides whatever job it is, it is still better than begging. Your dignity is still intact with it , rather than begging.

hello my friend SIMPLYD!
I am so flattered for marking me as the best response. I thank you for understanding my opinion and thank you for opening this kind of topic.Yes, you're right in saying that if we want to provide for ourselves, we can find jobs or something that has salary without choosing what they are. Happy day!

That is true. Not all beggar are really poor and can't find a way to buy food. I also observed that there are some who are pretending. I hate seeing beggars that looks healthier than me. I only give alms to those people whom I know are really true. Those people who are pretending to be beggars are just simply lazy. They want to have easy money.

Let us all discern among the beggars who to give alms. Those pretenders should be given a lesson, so let us just pass by them as if we didn't see them.

That is exactly what I am doing every time I see a beggar in the street. I give alms to those who are deserving in my own observation. I hate seeing pretenders. They are so lazy to find a good job.

Hi simply.. I agree with you that some beggars are just indolent people who would just want to have money without exerting effort to do so. As for the others who keep on begging and increasing in numbers, All I can say is that we should not be too harsh on them.. they have no choice because they are victims of a corrupt goverment and an uncaring society.. Does it matter for you if you give him some amount that will feed him/her for just one meal or for his baby's milk or food which you cannot even say food. For me I don't.. Just put yourself in their shoe and you will know why...

Well, i do give my alms to those i see as real beggars. Sometimes i would also give to those beggars who uses their babies to beg. Who cannot be moved by such sight? I think no one. A part of us would say, don't give because they will always do that, but a big part would say, give because the baby is pitiful.

I too rarely give alms to "able-bodied" beggars. When I do, it's only to the really old ones. If possible, I give them food or a piece of snack that I have with me at the time.

Welcome to the Philippines! hehe. Beggars are like mushroom that sprouts everywhere especially this holiday season! As I had watched in television interviews of some beggars, they came all the way from far provinces! They go in the main city to ask money.I mean, these people are making it their job and livelihood! You are right that when you give to someone, others will follow to beg for you to give them too. Sometimes, this is irritating. There are even children running in streets to ask for some money. Pity to some kids that use the money for not so good things. :(

I think from what i have learned from somebody from India, beggars also proliferate in their country.
But yes, during the holidays, beggars from the provinces specially those ethnic groups from Pampanga, comes to our province. But people don't give alms to them, because they are so annoying and uses their babies just to beg.
For those children, i don't give, because i would another kid would beg after him!

they surely are multiplying and at the same time getting wiser. Most of them is no longer contented in asking for alm. If you don't give them something they will resort on hurting you or worst they will take your items forcely.

Thank God, here in our place we don't have beggars like that. Because if they are like that, they will be mobbed and mugged.
