I noticed many new cellphones or smartphones having great feature of photography. They have great lens with so high Mega pixel and also other features like Autofocus, editing etc..The best thing about cellphone is we can send our photo to our freinds through email or chatting application or publish directly to website or social networking like facebook.. Understand the size of photo usually being compressed to smoothen transfering process..What do you think about those cellphone features? Do we need digital camera if we have those sophisticated cellphone already?

I have a smartphone with a 5MP camera in it, but I would not consider that as a primary camera. If I was going somewhere that I might need the use of a camera, I would take one of my digital camera models. The problem with phone cameras is that first of all they are awkward to hold in comparison to a dedicated camera, and they usually have anemic flash functions if you need them. Secondly the lens is protected by a clear window, however that window is still exposed to fingerprints and other debris that accumulate in the cell phone case, or your pocket or purse, so that debris is going to affect the image quality. Adjustments on phone cameras are limited, if any exist at all. Even my basic point-and-shoot models allow me to select aperture or shutter priority. Selecting shutter speed priority helps when imaging fast moving subjects. Basically, I use the phone camera as an emergency use only device, as any image is better than no image at all.

well, yes you are right..Sometimes we as photographer not satisfy with the performance of cellphone camera, like you said the flash functions is worse than original digital camera and the lens quality or protection is hard to compete with those original..However, if we are using it to take sudden moment in our daily life than it supposed to be no problem..Meaning,like you said we could using it and no problem with quality..Even I feel the latest cellphone camera is not that bad, in terms of quality of pictures..

Hello, I agree it is not bad for capturing a shot at the moment when you do not have a dedicated camera on hand. The images on the newer phone cameras are way better than what they used to be. But I do know of some people that forego a dedicated digital camera because they have a 5MP or more camera in their cell phone. Personally I would never do that, but to each their own. I just know personally I am very picky about image quality. When it comes to a camera, "good enough" is not a term I use very much. I have several different models of camera, from point-and-shoot to DSLR, and I chose them all for a specific function, some I have because of their extremely compact size, others because of their low noise/high ISO capability.

for me, Yes i would still need digital cameras even if their are cellphones having almost the same feature. my Cellphone, I take pictures but it consumes alot of battery taking alot of pictures and i can't afford to be in low battery while in the field away from home. You'll never know when someone will call you for important matters.

Hi davaome, you have good points.. I also notice the cellphones battery will drain down faster if we use digital camera function in our cellphones..However, we always using it since its handy and always there in your pocket..This even better than if we must carry over the slimmest digital camera every where we go..I snap many unique and candid pictures by using my cellphones camera function..

Cell phone cameras are never as good as a real digital camera. Even if they get better and better mega pixels and such, they still won't have all the great settings of a real camera. I'm a photo nut and I can't stand when people ONLY take cell phone pics because often they just aren't the greatest. If you really want nice clear pictures of things, a digital camera is a necessity in my opinion. I carry my small camera with me almost everywhere I go.

Of course we still need SLRs to cater larger functions, cellphone cameras are just for "fun".

Well stated! If you just want an image to post online or the like, then they would be fine. But any image that has a modicum of sincerity or importance to it is best acquired with a true camera.
