I am an addict movie downloader. It has been three days now since I started downloading movies. I have already downloaded the Devil's Double, Bruce Lee's A Warrior's Journey, Killer Elite, Arrow the Ultimate Weapon aka War of the Arrows, and My Kingdom. I'll now start with Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible trilogy. I am wondering if downloading movies is illegal. As far as I know, this is not illegal in our country. Aside from that, the site also allows free user to download unlimited movies. What is your view with regard to this?

It is illegal to seek to evade copyright in any way. That is an International agreement but whether your country chooses to enforce it rigidly or not at all is a different matter. You cannot say that it is 'not illegal' in your country; you can only say that you are unlikely to be caught and charged. The people who post such movies for free download (if they are protected by copyright, which all the ones you mention are) and the people who run the sites which make them available are committing a crime and, by downloading them, you are, at the very least, an accessory to the crime. It is becoming more and more common for both sites and individuals to be prosecuted for these offences and living in a country which appears to condone such things is NO guarantee that you will not be prosecuted. It is only a matter of time.

You have made me laugh, chrisding! Thank you. I also love to watch online but there is no site like that. If there is, the time for watching is limited. That is why, I am donwloading movies and saving the best.

I never downloaded movies. I downloaded a program which was required by the company. I have far known that there were websites where you can download the stuff you would like to for free and payment as well. In my opinion, if we took so lot and use for others purposes for e.g coping then selling to third party, then it could be considered illegal.

Those films have been shown in theaters already so I think it's not illegal to do so. But if you make copies of it resell it, that would be considered illegal. If that is illegal I think, the site that is letting users to download it freely have long been blocked. But those sites have been running for a long time.

Yes. I am also thinking about that, enelym001. But come to think of it. There are pirated CDs and DVDs available in almost all parts of our country. If the government is really concerned and is really implementing laws with regard to copyright violations, they should not tolerate this kind of activity.

Okay, all of you but Owlwings have officially failed Copyright Law 101. Are you PAYING for these films on websites that are legitimate retailers of digital movies? Legitimate retailers being sites like Amazon, BestBuy, Blockbuster, iTunes, etc. If the name of the site is free-movie-downloads, watch-free-movies, or any other junk like that (a NON-BRAND name), then it's very unlikely that it's a legitimate distributor, meaning that they have no right to distribute the films that are available for free download. If it's from a Torrent sharing site or a Peer to Peer file sharing network, then it is almost CERTAINLY illegal, even if you pay for the service. Breaching copyright law and distributing films without permission is piracy. Even though you are not the one distributing these films, you are still playing along with a CRIME. As owlwings said, you are at the very least an accessory to the crime. Copyright law is international. It doesn't cease being illegal once you cross borders. It's not okay just because it's easy and everyone does it. Have a little personal integrity, and get your films from legitimate retailers.
