Hi Lotters
They say Music has no boundaries. Yesterday, I was listening to a song Kolavari D as it was telecast on an FM channel. I was kind of forced to listen to the song as it was Power Cut and I as listening to the FM. On FB too (yeah, I exist there too) some of my friends have posted this video.
Though it is a Tamil movie song, the beats were great and the rhythm too was great. Kind of a song I can picturize on drunk college students for sure (not sure how they have done it in the Movie).
But that Kolavari D or its filming is not the question for discussion.
In today's world where we have so many channels - on Television, Radio, Internet (FB Twitter youtube), the chances of spreading like wild fire are higher than they were before.
So the question is - Would these Songs, Musicians, Singers or whatever related to music would have got the same kind of Fame if these Media Wouldnt have been there? Any song that you felt was successful only because of the media?
What are your views?
Cheers
theSids.

hello sid, these days, our film and music industry runs on publicity. much before the actual film is releases, songs for the movie are shown on music channel and only those who have the potential to gein much attention are telecast at first. like the song chummak challo caught the people to go into theatres to watch ra1.
if there is no publicity, only a few will be knowing about the movies and song. so yes here media has a great role to spread the fire.

sids,
Music knows no boundaries indeed...you know that my favorite song is a Tamil song by Rahman "En Swasa Kaatre"
I have known this song 4 years ago from a friend I met/known in Orkut site.
Then comes "Jash-ne Bahaara" and "Isq Bina" before "Jai-ho"

Most songs are made to go on a media source. back in the day, it was the artist who would write the songs and then try to get a producer to listen. Now it seems in reverse. A producer goes out to find a singer and then they mold them into what the suits Think the public wants to see And hear and then they find the songs for them to sing. And only when this artist becomes a star do they say I wrote this or that and it will be on the album. So I assume Every song was written by committee even when it may not have.

Back in day here groups like The Beatles and solo artists like Willie Nelson Wrote And sung their own music. They were Already satr material. They didn't need the suits to tell them What to write They just wrote from the heart and we the public loved it! It is so sad. Nowadays it is so hard to find a true artist . Most just want to be stars or rich.

Hi behen
That is quite true. Today, With the advent of the Live reality shows like the American Idol you have there, here we have dozens and that does give new talents or whatever a ground to start with. popularity rules and they always believe the more popular a singer at a time the more apt to use him/her.
However in the good ole days, there were lesser number of singers, and they were more like makers of many bollywood stars... As you are familiar with Bollywood, I can come up with some examples - Kishore Kumar nearly always sung for Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan while others were busy with other stars.

Hi sid
Its not like music are becoming famous by this media. I mean all songs got promoted via this media. But not all of them gets that famous. It totally depend on the song. That's what I think. Without those media how can they spread songs in different areas..? Isn't it.
Abut Kolavari.. I am hearing about it many times. Specially on FB. but just recently I heard that music on TV. Its cool. But I thought its from some music album not from any movie !! Don't know.

Hi bro
Gives me a relief to see you back I was starting to get worried. Good that you have been busy listening to this "Kolavari D" In fact mom called up about 10 minutes back and asked if I have that song. My nephew wants it on the cell phone! GRR!
I think the old songs that still rule the Indian Music, were more better in quality as compared to these of today and the best was that they became popular due to their merits. Today, you make a song, put it on FB or other social media and you have a craze of fans following... What do you think about this...
ps. No offense to kolavari fans... I am loving that song no doubt

Yes.. Was quite busy offline last month...
Well, even I saw that many youngsters are doing the same. I mean they are spreading their talent via FB. And I guess its a good thing. They having good platform to promote their talent which wasn't available in past. All thanks to technology. Many Indians youngsters are following the same way. I mean they are using youtube to show their signing talent.

Hi sid, In our India few songs become hit (super duper hit) from the day of its release and Kolaveri is one of them. This song is basically a Tamglish (tamil+english). Yes media adds with all other spices to a song, the singer/artist/music director and so on. No doubt these media play a great role to make it a hit. Remember about my comment on your other discussion - the publicity stunts... LOL.

Hi sids
The channels are lesser in the past as compared to the present times. The only way to learn about the songs is thru radio or movies. Old songs has better quality which is why up to this day, those good old songs were played in the radio. The fame it has is incomparable to what we have today. The songs today are here and famous now but forgotten so quickly the next day. It can be famous for a while as it was all over the social sites and famous movies - but some are staying longer than the old music.
But I would say, there are songs of today that aren't good but became famous because of the different kinds of media's we have now... Lady Gaga's songs and Rebecca Black's. Okay some of LG's songs are good but not all of them. Sorry for the LG fans. My brother likes her songs actually.

hi enelym
Exactly my point
Many of today's songs depend on their promotional Videos that are especially caste and done for the teenage community who keeps the Social Media and Internet windows open 24x7 and no one cares about the melodee or even the lyrics... they are all in need of glamor or the Oomph
But as you point out - Not all songs of today are that bad and those which are good will become popular with/without the Internet

The young people of today now likes the popular singers. And even the songs are weird they still like it. Some just likes the artist if they good looking, not even considering the voice quality of the singer and yes the melody and lyrics.
I know a lot of good songs in my brothers player... unfortunately those good and melodious songs are not known to many. The artist didn't even became popular. Jason Walker for instance, has really good songs.. but I don't know if a lot of people know him or listened to his songs.

lost myh response damn grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
copy paste clipboard. yhes the media has halped a lot and yet I feel for modern pop singers and musicans as their music is being downloaded
and not paid for. I have downloaded legal stuff most all classical but the site assured me I was legal and not breaking laws. but not the pop stuff. Ithink singers like Lady gaga get popular only because of the media as some of her stuff is not all that great.others like Presly, michael Jackson, the beatles all are time tested and stand on their own merit media or not.

Hi thesids! There are a ton of songs that are popular simply because of their promotion and exposure. My b/f is a musician...not popular in the way of the media, but very good and I often hear music from him and his friends that is wonderful. There is a group of what is considered "underground musicians" that hold festivals and concerts that alot of people never hear about. We go to some of those from time to time because he is a very active part of that community. They come from all over the US and sometimes down from Canada. They will never have the promotions and exposure that the people who have "made it" do, but they have a great love for their music. I think that the media is notorious for letting us hear what they want us to hear and some of these awesome musicians will never make the cut. They come from nowhere. There are, however, alot of options now as far as internet exposure and such.

Jen...as I have related before...I was in Radio for many years..Country Radio...and many years working at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, and I can truthfully say, I believe it is the "promoter" that furthers the artist along!
Gone is the day of being a true, wonderful artist without all the electronic enhancements and media!
I heard and saw, so many extremely good and talented artists at these festivals, like you b/f that just couldn/t get a "leg-up!"
Sorry, but I have heard many "star" artists that were only as good as their enhancements...quite a letdown!

Honestly, no. There was an experiment conducted to see when people turn towards arts and it was found that people actually did not relish best music even if they got it for free if they were in a rush to do some regular chores. There was a famous musician who played Bach numbers on railway platform and hardly anybody waited to listen to him. And people pay large sums to attend his concerts. Proves that our mind has to be relaxed to enjoy such things. That can happen only in the comforts of our homes.

The Why this Kolaveri Di is a great example of the social networking websites and media powers. The song has defeated lady gaga in becoming popular in so less time. Thought it is tamil song but everyone can understand it.
The song actually is a crap, in India we can never give values to good music. The crap songs like this Kolaveri DI will only work here. Which can make people laugh. And if any song have any story attached with it then it is already a hit.

It is true,I have one point to add,i.e.The truth has no boundaries too.No doubt,we must attribute music spreading to medium such as TV ,Internet, etc. or else they can't spread so fast.I like Indian music very much. Up to date, I still play "Raz song" and song of Rita (the episodes Of the film“vagrant”)with my ERHU- A chinese musical instrument.

Music is the single thing that is universal. It can be understood by everyone. It is so strong that it can actually dictate the emotions of someone. It has no boundaries, and it has limitless powers to influence someone's life. Mixed with the right melodies and carefully extracted words, songs can even inspire or drive someone to do unimaginable tasks. I sure am a witness to this.
