I am not against with those employee who has an extra income in their office for I am also one of those who is buying or purchasing those items or goods. Indeed, it gives convenience for me, for I will not go to the canteen anymore.lol. And I salute those kind of employee for they are very hardworking.

Well, there is usually a policy at most work places about things like that. While I don't see a problem with it, most companies do because they feel that the employee will be spending time and concentrating on their own things and not the job at hand. I remember when I was working, all the employees did not have access to the internet for that reason.

For me, it's okay as long as it does not take up all of the time of your office mate. When I used to work, a lot of my office mates do direct selling as well, but they still perform good on their job. Most of the times, employees' incomes cannot compensate the cost of living these days, so they really need to find some more money.

My extra income at work started quite accidentally when during the holidays our vening machine company raised the prices in the machines while the grocery stores were having a great sale on sodas. I decided I could sell them the same sodas for much less, plus since we worked on the third floor they did not have to travel downstairs (and lose breaktime) to get their drink. It went over so well that soon they started asking for popcorn, then snack chips, then candy bars, etc. I ended up opening an entire convenience store in my side desk drawers. It was great! The funny thing was it was not allowed but the bosses turned a blind eye to it and even secretly bought some items. This went on for about two years til I got sick and had to quit. I left a lot of inventory at work and people were so loyal they still bought my products and left the money in my desk to collect when I came to clear out my things. What a great extra income!

It's not really a bad idea, as long as you aren't using the work hours and it doesn't disturb your work productivity.
It just several people failed to do so.. Their so called "extra income" disturb their "main income". That's why several offices restrict this kind of activity..

I think it's all right as long as you do those things during lunch break or after work. But it's not really proper to do it during work hours. The company pays you during those hours, and you're expected to perform the task you were hired to do. Selling is a personal matter and you should do it on your personal time.

Within the U.S. such acts and secret business might be restricted, strongly punishable if once found out by other members of office mates. I would strongly telling your friend about the interest of conflicts which might also stated in the employment manual. I hope that either he/she will understand how serious that can be.

I cannot blame those people who make some extra income in office like selling somethings because they have their own reasons for doing that thing.Especially if their income is not enough for the needs of their family, we as a mother usually taking our pride to do anything to provide the needs of our children even in our simple way like this.As long that she make sure that she doing her works as an employee in the company accordingly. This thing is more ok than stealing others.

I think it is okay as long as work won't suffer.Do selling during break time or free time.In our office, some also sell clothes, make up,food and some other stuff.

I think that that's not a good thing...They are earning from their job...So what is the purpose of selling other things as side business???They will get some money from that...But it will affect to the personality.Position etc of that seller..If they want to make a side business, they can sell it at the near part of the house..The selling of things in the office will be cause to reduce the respect of other people to the person..They will under estimate them...So try to avoid such people and be good to work..All the best... :-)

Hi asliah, actually base on my experienced its not badly to selling a different things, as long as your responsibilities and duties are not affected in your work, right? I know in our company its restricted but for me even this is restricted role, i had to do this, to earn extra money because my salary is lack to my budget so i need to take a small business in my company.
