Do you learn from your past experience?

I have always hear this phrase "experience is the best teacher" or "learn from mistakes or past experiences". As I ponder on it and look back on the life I've been through - there were no problems that came alike which I have been before. Nor a relationships that patterns the same. Different problem different solutions. Different love life partner, different memories, different issues and different endings too. So where does our past experience fits into? Have you ever tried making a decision or solving a problem that you have came across already?

In every experience that we encounter, we always get something from it that we learn after. May it be in our love life, family or any relationships that we belong to, there will always be something that will make us realize how our experiences made us the person we are right now. We might be facing different issues, problems, and memories of our past but after all, we still were able to overcome them becoming stronger and ready to face every challenge that we might be facing in the future.

Past experience also teach us to control our emotion and going to do something voluntarily without thinking anything. Because of the past experience, I have learned to control my emotion and do not get heart if something is not achieved or anything I wished is not fulfilled.

Hi Grace I would say that it may not be the same situation we face every time but our past experiences and knowledge gained there off helps us to handle situation even it may have been different . We make innumerable mistakes in life and each time we do it we learn a lesson and makes us stronger to handle life . May be your problems have not been repeated as you learnt from the past and never made a mistake in those spheres . Life teaches us at every moment . We came to know from a very young age that fire burns us so we always take a precaution and it is never repeated unless it is an accident . According to the French psychologist and philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau , naturalism is an aspect of life and we should face life as it is . When we face it alone then only we learn from it . Nice topic

Hi rollyrolly, thank you very much for a very nice insights too.Indeed our experiences will make us strong.what is important is learn to accept it whether good or bad, learn from it and be ready to apply it. In application, we learn to humble ourselves by converting our bad experiences to a good one. Thank you so big. :)

Hi - some people do learn to a point. It's different for all of us. As I grew into an adult, I never made the same mistake twice but things changed and because of who I am and what made me tick, I began to make mistakes; to take the wrong path. What I didn't learn was that I had to recover from my childhood, recover from my past. I had to heal and I had to change who I was. Unfortunately I had no clue how to go about doing those things and certainly, I did not have the skills. Learning from our experiences is one thing but dealing with life when we make mistakes is something else again.

Experience makes a man very perfect. Sometimes when I handle the situation, I think of similar situation in my earlier age, which I could not handle properly and lost both moneytarilly and emotionally. Now, that situation is very easy to control and it is because of my bitter past experience. Age also beomes factor and how much you analyse the situation depends on that.

About ten to twelve years ago, I used to become hurt, when emotionally somebody was telling me something. Now that situation has changed. I just ignore those words and take it in otherway. Or else, I can say that I don't keep silly things in my mind. Earlier I used to get attracted by seeing something. But now, I do not get attracted by seeing something, which I know can't be of mine in anyway. So, life is also part of past experience. Some people do learn and some get hurt without taking a lesson from the past.

hello grace! what a nice topic! I've learned a lot from my past experiences. Worst things from my pasts changed me into a mature and wise person right now. I never regret those past experiences because I could never be who I am right now without those experiences and persons who taught me of lessons. happy day!

Hi Greninee! thanks a lot for the response. Its true that all our bad memories and experiences now will turn out to be a good one at the end of the tunnel. No matter how bad it is, it is still amazing. And what makes is amazing is YOU or US who stand strong and handle it with flying colors. Have a nice day all the time.

Yes, I would agree that experience is the finest teacher because we tend to learn from that, rather than advice and what people say to us. As a Zen practitioner, I value my experience, and whilst I listen to what other people say about something in life, I really have to find out for myself. I also encourage other people not to have "blind belief". An experience is something that in reality can only occur in the hear and now. Past experience cannot really happen, because it already has happened and no longer exists. Experiencing is about living with awareness of what it going on in the here and now, and this is as fine teacher, especially on spiritual matters, that otherwise remain hidden to us. _Derek

Funny how I was reading this article a few month ago and it said the only animal who would trip over an obstacle twice was the human bean! other animals would remember where the obstacle was and never go over it again! I guess as humans we think we are intelligent enough to be able to trip over the same stone again and again and be able to fix it some day! until we realize that is not the way to go! and that is when we learn wisdom!

Hello, no doubt in it that experience in the best teacher. I am agree that in future every thing is different and treatment also different. But some situation repeat itself. Suppose some time you miss your train for some reason. For next time you must take care that your train will not miss for the reason you missed it last time. It is learning from mistake.

It is best for one to learn from any experience. In fact, I always say that experience is the best teacher in any given situation. When one does not learn from experience, then that person might be sick, or he would be in trouble not far from now. As we get older, we get wiser, and it is through experience that makes us wiser.

Your right, different problems needs different solutions in a different situations. I always try to solve problems but sometimes the other party are not willing to solve it. What should I do? If she is happy I let her go. I always believe on second chances and I'm willing to take the risk and we all learn from our mistakes the second time or even more than that.

No doubt if we look back and analyze the experiences we study a lot from that, it won't be the same. When a child go near the glowing candle and catch the flame it hurts her hand, the next time she knows automatically the flame hurt her and she didn't like to go and catch the flame. If we tell her hundred times she didn't understand only experience if it is good or bad they teach us lessons.

Hi, grace: I am strongly agree with your concept, everyone should learn from their past experience with its different memories, but everyone should pass fast after taking those lessons from their past, do not stuck with your past deeply, try to Go ahead to plan your future. People whom always talking about their past, do not live correctly their present live and do not planning will their future. My best regards

Hi grace, I think the underlying reason for any problem remains the same, only the situation differs significantly each and every time. Maybe that's why we always hear people say that experience is the best teacher. My past experiences have taught me a lot. Nowadays or at least most of the time I can sense and feel what the future hold for me. But the sad thing is, I'm yet to learn to say 'no'. No one is to be blamed but me.When it comes to my life, history loves to repeat itself.

That's why people always say that they have experience doing something and i think we should all solve our problems by our past experiences. It's indeed helps us a lot.My father always told me to listen to his experience and now i realize that sometimes we should indeed learn something from that.lol, every new day is a beautiful day.

The phrase you mentioned stands true in many people's life. I agree with you that different problems have different solutions, but what we can learn from the past problem is the way we faced it. In case, I dealt with some problem in the past indignantly and experienced that its repercussions were quite harmful, I may learn from it and next time deal with the problem (a different problem ) with calmness. This is what I do personally. I learn from the actions and reactions delivered from the sides and the consequences of it. I try to understand people's behavior and deal with them accordingly. So I believe that "Experience is the best teacher" and "We learn from our past experiences".

Lessons learned, it is the best part of the experience i treasure the most. I always believe that our present circumstances will always have a reason. On different love life i don't think so with my present situation. I do learn also from others experience. Listening to them gives me wisdom and applying it to others who seek guidance from me(mostly my sisters) makes it a great teachers.
