I'm thinking of buying a own-built desktop, what should i consider for its components? I'm thinking of asus or gigabyte motherboard, geforce 2gb, 16gb or ram and 500gb-1tb hard drive. is that enough?

If you're looking for a gaming or 3d modelling pc, then it's good. Based on what you've said I assume you're going to get an i5 or i7 processor with that? If you're not using the pc for gaming or professional graphics then it's too much pc. Most applications don't need all that.

thats alot of system spec its going to cost you alot, if you want to order all that components go to newegg.ca or something because its cheaper and it wont cost you $2000 or around there i build alot of computers for customers and friends for a good price if you have any questions let me know i can give you suggestions. :)

First off, welcome to Mylot!
You haven't said what you will be using the PC for.
If it is for games then go for Gigabyte mobo with plenty of room for overclocking. I have had trouble with some Asus boards. Go for a 120Gb SSD C: drive and 2 off 1Tb drives, all in SATA3 and in a RAID setup. Solid state drives are very fast.
You will need CPU cooling for overclocking and a good quality power supply unit. A linked pair of 2Gb graphics cards would be nice but they will be the most expensive component along with the CPU.
In the UK a good gamebox will give you little change from GBP 3,000.
For normal office use your spec would be plenty, even with a 512Mb or less graphics card.

I would recomend g.skill ripjaws ram. Dont get the AMD bulldozer. The sandybridge core i7 2600k is one of the best processors out there and you can overclock it to run even faster. I also recomend a GTX 570 or 560 ti for graphics. Goodluck with your computer!

I'd go with 1tb hard drive. As you didnt mention processor i would recommend you not get the AMD hexacore processor. The Core i7 2600k is an amazing processor. What kind of 2gb graphicscard are you getting.

By the way you have not mention the processor, After seeing your specifications i guess that you will at least go for Intel quad core processor or AMD hexa core processor. I hope i am correct
Wait for ivy bridge to arrive in market. As expert says it will give better performance and long power back up over current processors available in market. By the way 500GB hard drive seem less. GO for 1tb
